My Christmas was marked by the addition of three more great-grand children to my family; one born on Christmas Eve. This makes sixteen great-grand children and as I write this report I been told that another grand-child is now pregnant. The start of the year is the time for me to think about what I want to gain in scrolling and carving over the next twelve months. I hope the Port Elliot show will be on this year as I was disappointed when it was cancelled last year. I also think that now is the time to plan a project for the Scrollsaw network that we will be hosting next year. So I wish everyone a happy 2017 of scrolling. WORKSHOP PROGRAMME WORKSHOP REPORT March the 8 th OK, so the last four months or so have gone rather quickly. I can barely remember what we have done over these last four months, but if you were to access the club s web site you will see some of the works presented during that time. The SA Map project is well on its way and 1

2 Neil competed a piece for that the PS Murray Princess in January. Don s 1.25 metre intarsia Palomino took centre stage in December workshop while Graham s green man carving out of Huon Pine gave us the evil eye in February. We ve had Mike leading us through the shore bird project in January and we will revisit that in April/June. Trevor Gaskin has provided a run down on the use and safety guidelines for the plunge router and he will repeat that on the Saturday Workshop in March. Meanwhile Neil has given the February (Saturday) Workshop members some pointers on competition quality projects. Being the hosts for next year s national Scroll saw Exhibition, all club members are eligible to submit entries into that exhibition. Neil has provided and overview of the classifications within which we can submit our work if we so wish, made a number of suggestions as to how to ensure our work is up to standard and has encouraged us all to try and put at least one item each into the show. He will repeat this presentation at the Tuesday Workshop this month. Although numbers were down at the workshops in December and January, the attendance at both February Workshops was great. Most everyone pitched in for the shore birds project in January and in February the numbers were such that I thought we were going to have to lock anyone else out. Let s hope the enthusiasm continues. 3M spray adhesive is now $26 and again only about seven of those are left. Once again, have a look at the November and December 2016 and the January and February 2017 Scroll and Tell picture gallery to get an idea of the work some of us have presented. Ted van Dijk Tuesday Coordinator SCROLL & TELL JANUARY Neil presented an exquisite centre panel for our SA map project - PS Murray Princess. It was a much more interesting design than some other river scenes I ve seen. Fred had his continuing series of wooden messages, both beautiful pieces of timber, the angel from an old Mahogany door and a Father s Day theme on Oregon. The Hoop Pine plywood order has been completed with all but one member yet to collect theirs. The club has purchased some extra pieces, but there is only a limited amount of 1.5mm and 3mm pieces left. The 2

Ted presented a unicorn jigsaw puzzle cleverly mounted (a very shallow rebate to keep it in position and standing vertically) on an attractive plinth As well several members assisted w i t h c u t t i n g, s a n d i n g o r priming shorebird silhouettes as well as machining and attaching the stakes (a DEWNR project). FEBRUARY Phil Muller produced a wine themed bottle and glasses (much discussion about red vs white) very cleverly mounted on a plinth as well as an a p p e a l i n g r e c t a n g u l a r knob from the q u a n d o n g o f f c u t s t o finish off his p r e v i o u s l y c o m p l e t e d woven basket. made from a barrel stave (American Oak), 3

4 as well as a Nativity Scene from laminated offcuts. Graham Jones presented a green man from Huon Pine (it s amazing what we learn at these workshops). Mike exhibited a set of nine GEX tessellating geckoes (from the current Scrollsaw magazine) cut from 9mm coloured MDF that Theo had mentioned previously. John McTier again came to the fore with four pieces of teddy bear intarsia - Ozzie (two thereof), Baseball Sam and Priscilla. Ted disclosed his experiments (wizard & star puzzles from the Judy & Dave Petersen Puzzle Book) with acrylic colours on MDF and pine. Fred came thru this time with a 3D sign. 4

5 Neil Schultz, at the Saturday workshop, talked us through the categories (fretwork, intarsia, portraiture and other) as well as the categories (basic, intermediate, complex) based on the characteristics of the pattern used by the Australian Scrollsaw Network Exhibition. And he suggested that we need to get our acts into gear in regards to finishing - i.e. that at least as much time needs to be devoted to finishing as to cutting. And: preparation, preparation, preparation! He further suggested that, as all members of the host club, we are all eligible to enter; that we should be planning/preparing our entries now! PROMOTION PROJECT The SA map project is nearing the point where assembly will commence soon. DEMONSTRATION PROGRAMME So far the club will be demonstrating at the following events: July Building & Home Improvement Show: this is a WoodgroupSA event - sales through the gallery 7-8 October Pt Elliot Show (weather permitting). While we ve not yet received an invitation we expect to October Sunday Mail Home Show: this is usually our main fundraiser (i.e. name cutting, Xmas & other craft items) - club sales only November Creative Wood Show at Handorf: this is a new initiative by Charles Greig and only open to WoodgroupSA clubs and club members - club and member sales (if you, personally, are selling you will be expected to either assist with the setup/packup or man the stall for half a day). As always we ll be looking for volunteers closer to the dates. SAFETY Sometimes y all get sick of our continual reminders on safety, safe operating procedures and policies. Yes you do! A recent event should focus your minds on the importance of safety. One of our senior and very experienced members has parted company with a finger tip and portion of a thumb. In the time to think this might be a bit dangerous (too short a piece over the buzzer) it had all happened. Despite claims of advantages: one fewer finger nail to clean, no picking the nose with that finger straightened out the arthritic bend of the finger no thumb-print id won t happen again because there ll be more clearance I m confident that most of us would forgo these benefits. I suspect that had this happened at the Mitcham Community Shed then we might be homeless and looking for new premises! Do take care every time you use a piece of machinery or equipment! TOYMENDOUS You may be aware that Toymendous have not gotten off to a start so far this year - complications with the workshop they use. The Committee has decided to offer to cut at the April workshops to assist - Brian Smith, one of our members and their workshop coordinator, will manage any members willing to assist. SHOREBIRDS Both January workshops saw a hive of activity with members helping with cutting, sanding, making stakes (cut, sand, round 5

6 edges on the router), assembly and priming. Although a prodigious amount was achieved there still remains some assembly and priming - we aim to finish these tasks at the June workshops (also electrical tagging that day). My thanks to all who helped. DREMEL Until recently we would have automatically advised you to buy a Dremel rotary tool and workstation (stand) as an essential scroll sawing accessory. However, the latest versions are no longer capable of fitting a drill chuck - this is how we accommodate small (i.e. down to sub-1mm) drill bits. Oh what a joy change is! WOODGROUP SA Burnside WoodgroupSA conducted another very successful exhibit & sale at the Burnside auditorium. More details in the next WoodgroupSA newsletter.
