WORKSHOP PROGRAMME June: electrical tagging and completing shorebirds - please bring old clothes and a paint brush. July: craft items for our Xmas selling August: no scheduled activity September: AGM Saturday. WORKSHOP REPORT As the year marches on we are already at the beginning of June, and we have had three more workshops since the last newsletter. Whilst I have been somewhat occupied, following up and ensuring the gilding workshop went off as planned during the month of May, Fred and Mike ensured that both March and April workshops ran smoothly. Trevor and Neil completed their tutorials (on the plunge router and exhibition standards) in March whilst Brian Smith, in April, arranged for some cutting to assist Toymendous. During all the workshops there seemed to be a real buzz. The gilding practical was successfully run on the mezzanine floor on both Saturday and the Tuesday during May, with Terry tutoring at least seven members on each day. It allowed those that were keen to get 1

Molde chaired the Woodgroup SA board meeting held on the Friday afternoon. The catering was excellent and the camaraderie both at the workshop and the dinners was very evident throughout the week end. I can strongly recommend attending these events. on with their scrolling projects plenty of space down below. It was very generous of Terry to run the workshop on both days, with about $10 worth of 23 carat gold leaf being used by each participant. The notes provided by Terry in regard to gilding are available on the members only section of the website. The range of items being brought in for Scroll and Tell over the last few months is really impressive. Check the website and you will see. Fred, Neil, Theo, Don, Phil, John and Mike have all contributed and it amazes me that the range of items is so varied. As always, our June Workshops will focus on electrical safety tagging. Please bring those items which you bring regularly to The Shed as well as any other tools or extension cords you may need at demonstrations, as all need to have this year s tags. We will complete the shore birds project as well during June. Whilst the tagging is going on, the finishing and undercoating of the competed birds is our focus. Old Clothes please!!!!! I attended the Merry Month of May in Renmark during the last week end of May, and enjoyed myself immensely. Franky, Maureen, Theo and myself had a great time cutting and meeting various Woodgroup members, sharing ideas and in some cases tutoring other Woodgroup members. Trevor That s it for now. Remember - electrical tagging this month!!! Ted van Dijk Tuesday Coordinator SCROLL & TELL MARCH South Oz Scrollers will host the Australian Scroll Saw Exhibition next year, starting of Friday April 21 st and finishing on Sunday 23 rd. The event will take place at the Mitcham Institute Hall. Here we can see Neil Schulz explain the finer points of what will be required to participate and be competitive. The Rules Governing the Exhibition will be available at the workshops and it is requested that members of the South Oz Scrollers get started with their entries. There will be a number of different categories, which will enable everyone to have a go. Closer to the event, a number of volunteers will be required to assist in the set-up and other aspects. 2

Here we can see a fretwork silhouette of an American Indian made by Neil Schulz. of his jigsaws, this time using the subject of cats and the owl family. From memory, it represents an Apache Indian, but more to the point shows what is required in presentation. The picture is cut out of three ply Hoop Pine and I am sure there is a story behind the request for an item of this nature. As usual, Neil sets the standard, by repeating his favorite saying, preparation preparation preparation! This comment remains consistent with all of his work and it should be with everyone in South Oz Scrollers. Ted has again participated with examples Phil Mueller had been very busy this month with three items to show:a wine drinker s plaque with the plinth made from a wine barrel stave, 3

a flat globe from Yellow Pine and a pine trivet. attendance. The stand that the Easter Bunny sits on is also made from a design that can be copied by other members who may like to make an item that can be displayed in a prominent place in the entertaining room of any house hold. Franky Pastuch showed a jewelry box from Meranti as well as experiments with making round and square animal towers. Theo Kampes presented the results of experiments with food colouring to dye/ stain wood. APRIL Phil Mueller spoke about his Easter Bunny made from Hoop Pine and highlighted his work by using different colours as a background to establish an item that would be approved by all who were in Phil also had made Easter signs. Fred Leaper started with a d e s i g n from Steve Good. Fred believes that Steve has m a n y worthwhile designs and if any of the Clubs members do 4

participate in making something taken from his Website, it would be a good idea to contribute, let s say $2.00 each time, to help out with more examples over time. John McTier discussed three fretwork designs, the first is a rendition of the River boat Coonawarra sometimes berthed at Mannum and the design can be found in Theo s and Neil s book of patterns. Fred had a real good story about the World s Best Trucker (made from American Oak) to assist in making the S&T a fun part of the morning. Fred has made a good attempt at making a Chess Board and spoke about trying to using the slip method in making the actual board. The Wolf is a d e s i g n that was p u b l i s h e d in one of the recent Scroll Saw magazines, both are made from 3mm Hoop Pine. Ted gave a good description and the problems encountered in making his Fruit Bowl, designed by Susan Langtree and made from Blackbutt and Blue Gum. The third design is one of an American Steam engine and very similar to the RX Shunting Steam Engine that used to ply 5

the suburban rail lines of Adelaide up to the late 1950 s. John served his apprenticeship as a fitter and turner at Islington and has many recollections of the problems that needed to be fixed with the Westinghouse braking system that evolved with the trucks pulled by these locomotives. J o h n f i n i s h e d the Show and Tell with two e a s y t o m a k e examples of wooden i n t a r s i a, this time a Flower and what looks like a cocker spaniel. The predominant timber for the flower is Lemon wood, Pinus Radiata, Meranti and Tasmanian Oak. The dog is Red Gum and Oak. John McTier MAY Don Isam really stole the show with his intarsia tiger. John McTiershowed us his cat s head intarsia. Ted presented his NAGA awards (two different techniques) and bow ties to be worn by the waiters at Helen s Biggest Morning Tea. 6

Theo brought along some prototype toys and animal shaped mobile phone stands. name cutting, Xmas & other craft items) - club sales only November Creative Wood Show at Handorf: this is a new initiative by Charles Greig and only open to WoodgroupSA clubs and club members - club and member sales (if you, personally, are selling you will be expected to either assist with the setup/packup or man the stall for half a day). As always we ll be looking for volunteers closer to the dates. SHOREBIRDS Remaining assembly and priming will be happening at the June workshops (also electrical tagging that day). Please bring a medium sized paint brush. Mike Donnellan PROMOTION PROJECT The SA map project is awaiting Neil s return so that the Jarrah framing can be machined and assembled. DEMONSTRATION PROGRAMME So far the club will be demonstrating at the following events: July Building & Home Improvement Show: this is a WoodgroupSA event - sales through the gallery 7-8 October Pt Elliot Show (weather permitting). While we ve not yet received an invitation we expect to October Sunday Mail Home Show: this is usually our main fundraiser (i.e. Last year s shorebirds had another outing at the Botanic Gardens to support the release of Circle is a collage story by children s author and artist Jeannie Baker, is a beautifully-illustrated story following the migration of the Bar-tailed Godwit from Australia through Southeast Asia, and China to its Alaskan breeding grounds and then back to Australia.
