2 JAMES RIVER WOODCARVERS ASSOCIATION 2013 CARVING COMPETITION ENTRY RULES 1. The JRWCA carving competition is open to all carvers and unlimited entries. All entries must be carved and finished or painted, etc. by the carver and completed since January 1, Previous ribbon winning carvings in JRWC competitions are not eligible for judging. JRWC reserves the right to refuse any entry that, in their opinion, is offensive. Only THREE (3) carvings in each category are allowed and only ONE (1) division per carver. By registering, the carver agrees to abide by all JRWC competition rules. 2. There will be three (3) divisions of competition: a. Novice - Novice is defined as a carver who has been carving less than four (4) years and has not won a Blue Ribbon. Winners of Blue Ribbons in any JRWCA competition must move up to Intermediate before the four year limit is reached. b. Intermediate - Open to any carver who has been carving more than 4 years and has not won a Blue Ribbon in the Intermediate Division. Winners of Blue Ribbons in any JRWCA competition must move up to Open c. Open - this division is open to all carvers who want the highest level of challenge. 3. Fees for entering carvings into the competition: Members are $2 per entry up to a maximum of $10. Nonmembers are $10 for unlimited entries, Youth-members are free for unlimited entries and Youth-nonmembers are $10 for unlimited entries. A late fee of $5 will be assessed for entries received within 10 days (after April 23) of the competition judging date. 4. Registration begins April 1, Receipt of entry form & money will be giving by only. 5. Mail entry forms to: Tom Lasser Blunts Bridge Rd., Ashland, VA OR leave the entry form and money at The Woodcraft Store, Richmond. Make checks payable to James River Woodcarvers. 6. Carving check-in times at Woodcraft will be the Thursday, May 2 (3 to 6 pm) & the Friday, May 3(1 4 pm) before the judging begins. Entry numbers will be assigned at this time. All carvings must be received at the competition site no later than 4:00 pm on the Friday of judging. No exceptions will be made for late entries. 7. Judging will commence at 5:30 pm on Friday. Carving will be judged by a panel of three on design and technical difficulty, skilled execution, surface finish, and final presentation. Ribbons may not be awarded in all categories as determined by the panel of judges. 8. Entrants are responsible for placing their entry in the appropriate category. However, the judges, at their discretion may move a carving to a more appropriate category within the divisions or a diffident division and category. The judge s decisions are final. 9. All ribbon winners must be left at the Woodcraft Store for public display Saturday and Sunday. Non-winners may be pickup after 5:00pm Saturday. All other carvings may be picked up after 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. A signature for pick-up will be required. CATEGORIES ABSTRACT: A relief or in the round carving emphasizing line or non representational form expressing a quality or characteristic apart from any specific object or instance. Maybe unpainted, painted or natural finish. 2. PYROGRAPHY: Wood burning. The burning or incision through heat, of a pattern that is the principle subject of the piece. Example, a picture burned into a plaque is acceptable. A carved piece with burned detail is not acceptable. 3. FOUND WOOD: Any subject that is carved in wood in its natural and unaltered condition commonly thought of as driftwood, dead falls, cottonwood bark, cypress knees, slab wood (discarded portion of a tree when it is sawn into lumber), pine knots and etc. 4. ORNAMENTAL: The object of this category is intended for those carvings which are decorative in nature, but may be functional such as signs, jewelry, carved boxes, dolls, etc. This category may include any carving not meeting the definition of any other category. 5. CARICATURE: May be any subject. May be in the round, relief, natural finish or painted. Caricature exists in many forms and is acceptable in any form.

3 5A -SMALL: carvings between 2 and 8 inches in any direction, excluding the base. 5B - LARGE: carvings greater than 8 inches in any direction, excluding the base. 6. AQUATIC (realistic): May be relief or in the round and be of any water related subject such as a fish, frog, whale or turtle. Must prominently feature the realistic form of aquatic life. 7. AQUATIC (stylized): Same as Aquatic (realistic), however prominently features the stylized form of the subject. 8. ANIMALS (realistic): Usually terrestrials, mammals, reptiles, insects, etc. May be in the round or relief, and represents the true form of the subject as found in nature. 9. ANIMALS (stylized): Same as Animals (realistic), and prominently features the stylized form of the subject. 10. BIRDS (realistic): All avian species except waterfowl and shorebirds. In the round or relief. Must feature the prominent features of the realist form of the bird 11. BIRDS (stylized): Same as Birds (realistic). Must feature the prominent features of the bird in a stylized form. 12. WATERFOWL, SHOREBIRDS (realistic): May be in the round or relief and prominently features the realistic form of the waterfowl or shorebird. 13. WATER FOWL, SHORE BIRDS (stylized): Same as (realistic) except usually and prominently features the stylized character of the waterfowl or shorebird. 14. HUMAN SCULPTURE (realistic): May be in the round or relief and must prominently feature the realistic human form. The form may be fully clothed or nude. 15. HUMAN SCULPTURE (stylized): Same as (realistic) except prominently features the stylized human form using a minimum of detail. 16. RELIEF: Generally described as a picture in wood. The forms or figures may be raised or incised into the wood. Relief carvings of an abstract nature may better be placed in the Abstract category 17. FUNCTIONAL: Usually utilitarian in nature. Items maybe unpainted, natural finish or painted and have painted or unpainted decorations added to the surface. 17-A FUNCTIONAL: walking sticks, canes, toys 17-B FUNCTIONAL: eating utensils or treenware. 18. CHIP CARVING: The incision of a pattern or design into the wood by removing a series of precise chips to form an engraved design lower than the surface. The resulting design may be positive or negative in nature. 20. HOLIDAY / RELIGIOUS: any carving pertaining to a religious or holiday theme 20-A. HOLIDAY carvings: pertaining to a non-religious holiday theme such as Santa s, Easter bunnies, Jack-O-Lanterns and flags. 20-B. RELIGIOUS carvings: pertaining to a religious theme such as Bible figures, angels, menorahs and crosses. 21. MINIATURES: any carving not greater than 2 inches in any direction, excluding the base. 22. UNDER ADVISEMENT / ROUGH OUTS: Carvings that were completed with the aid of or in class of a professional instructor or carving that were made using a manufactured rough out blanks. Carvings may be in the round or relief, unpainted, natural finishes or painted. Carvings should be primarily wood and hand carved, not turned. This category is not eligible for Best of Division awards. However, first, second and third place ribbons will be awarded.

4 23. YOUTH: Children under the age of 18 years at the time of the competition. May be subdivided by age if needed. Must have parent or guardian s permission. Ribbons may be awarded in each category as follows: First Place - blue rosette ribbon Second Place - red ribbon Third Place - white ribbon Honorable Mention yellow ribbon Best of Show: The "Best of Show" award will be selected from the "Best of Division winners from the novice, intermediate and open division. The "Best of Show" award will be selected by consensus of the three competition judges. Judges Creative Award: This award will be selected by consensus of the three competition judges. People s Choice: This selection will be by popular vote of all visitors to Woodcraft on the day of the competition. Winner will be chosen by 4 pm. Saturday. Rosettes will be awarded as follows: Best of Division rosettes will be awarded in the Novice, Intermediate and Open. Best of Show rosette will be judged & awarded to one best of the Division winner. People s Choice Judges Creative Award In addition to the above rosettes, $25.00 gift cards to Woodcraft will be awarded to each Best of Division and the Best of Show winner.

Neither the James River Woodcarver s membership nor the Woodcraft employees will be financially responsible for any loss or damage to the carvings resulting from any cause. Normal precautions will be taken to provide safety and security during the competition. Entries agree that any photographs may be published for the purpose of advertising the James River Woodcarver s club. All entries should be removed by Sunday after 5 pm. Signature of pick- up
