4 Don Holding and Steve Willgoose each brought a Disston rip-saw a Dual-Grip or thumbhole handled saw designed for laborious rip cuts, both saws were in very good condition. These saws were made by Disston from about 1880 until about Most of us in the club have never seem such a saw with the unique interesting handle design and this evening there were two such saws being shown. The handle is gripped normally with the lead hand and the thumb of the second hand is put through the thumbhole. The fingers of the hand are then wrapped across the top of the saw handle. (This paragraph was copied from the "online reference of Disston saws"). Don also showed some exotic wood pieces that were his father's collection. Steve also showed an antique back saw. Don Holding's Dual-Grip Thumbhole Rip Saw Steve Willgoose's Dual-Grip Thumbhole Rip Saw Lars Larsson showed a folding carpenters ruler he received as a gift from a family member in Sweden. The ruler was in real good condition, the markings & numbers were hand carved, it was determined that was probably made in the late 1800's. Marianne Webb displayed a vintage hand plane (a nickle plated Craftsman made by Sargent in the style of a Stanley #45) metal rebate plane that was in exceptionally good condition, it was used by her husband's great grandfather. Allan Levinsohn brought a Stanley #4-1/2 handplane he purchased at a yard sale in almost new condition. Keith Stevens showed architectural, exotic high-end real wood veneer samples with a paper backing. Chuck Lenfesty mentioned the Sechelt Seniors Center is planning for their bus a trip into Vancouver, stopping at KMS Tools, Princes Auto, Lee Valley Tools and IKEA, $20 per person. To take advantage of this service one has to be a member of the Seniors Center. For more details about this trip contact the Sechelt Seniors Center. Page 4 of 5
5 Ken Rogers brought a Busy Bee sharpening honing guide that he uses to sharpen plane irons and bench chisels with good results. Speaker: Dave B. did a hands-on presentation about sharpening woodworking plane irons and chisels. Dave explained the free-hand method taught at some woodworking schools where the students with some practice develop their skills and speeds the re-sharpening process to about a minute with good results. Dave had numerous samples of different styles of sharpening guides and spoke about different types of steel used for plane irons and chisels. Dave demonstrated by sharpening a new plane iron from Lee Valley Tools made from PM-V11. PM-V11 is a powder-metal (PM) steel, according to Lee Valley they found this alloy steel is tough, wear resistant that retains its edge longer when used on dense, abrasive woods, takes on a keen edge and is easy to sharpen without switching your sharpening stones. Powder metals have become an important part of industry during the last 40 years or so. Dave started by producing a hollow grind to the beveled face using a hand cranked grinder to minimize the risk of over heating the steel and losing it's mechanical properties. Dave shortly produce an keen edge on a plane iron on ceramic on glass stones that he was able to easily shave the hair off his arm. Dave generally followed the tutorial found on the web produced by Stuart Tierny of Japan, his website is When the website opens, click onto"home" upper left corner, click onto "Sigma Power ceramic special set" scroll down to the two hand sharpening videos. Door Prize: Don Holding won a door prize, two, 18" long drill bits donated by Steve Willgoose. Roy Mitton won a Lee Valley Tools brass marking gauge donated by Dave Beauchesne. Dave Bell won a plunge router bit donated by Steve Willgoose Meeting adjourned at 9:00 PM Ken Karaloff Secretary- Suncoast Woodcrafters Guild Page 5 of 5
