1 Monthly newsletter for the Orange County Scroll Saw Association November 2014 Holiday Ornament Exchange Can you believe it is that time of year again when we ALL need to start making our Christmas Ornaments to be exchanged at our Christmas party in December? Last year we had good participation, so let s keep up the good work this year. The ornament exchange is an entertaining way to give and receive a handmade project from our members and the fun increases as more folks participate. This is not a contest and there are no rules. Here is how it works. We ask that everyone make an ornament and bring it to the dinner. If you are bringing your wife, husband, child, friend, etc. then please bring an ornament for each of them as well so they can participate. We ask that you either wrap your ornaments individually or put them in a bag, box, tissue paper or whatever you have so that no one can see the ornament. Please do not put your name on the bag. When you arrive, the ornaments will be placed on a table in the front of the room, and the names of the participants will be entered in the drawing. A name will be drawn and that person will have their pick of all of the ornaments. They will open the ornament at the front of the room and show everyone what they selected. We will then ask who made the ornament. (I apologize for saying there were no rules, because there are a few.) The next person that is pulled can choose from the ornaments on the table or steal the ornament from the person who made the first selection. This goes on to the end, when the last person can take the last ornament or steal an ornament from someone else. After the last ornament is selected, the first person to choose, has the option of stealing any of the other ornaments. The person whose ornament was stolen, gets the first person s ornament and the exchange is over. The last rule that I can think of is that once an ornament has been stolen twice, it can no longer be stolen. We look forward to seeing what everyone has made for the ornament exchange. If you have any questions or if you need a pattern, please let Chuck know. The December meeting time is 6:00 instead of 7:00 pm. The dinner at this party is a potluck. The sign-up sheet will be at the November meeting and is in the newsletter on page 5. There were over 40 people at the dinner last year, so please keep that in mind when planning the size of what you bring. If you are not going to be at the meetings you can me or call me with your selection at lavaunski@pacbell.net or and leave a message. We will need a volunteer to step forward and help coordinate this event, There are lots of members willing to help with the details, but we could use a lead person.

You can see the pictures on the previous pages. Thanks to Mike Morand and LaVaun Ward for bringing ideas for Thanksgiving projects. We hope to see some finished examples at the November meeting. Larry Olson was our presenter at the October meeting. He demonstrated how to make 6 veneered coasters. He did an excellent job explaining the process from beginning to end. Jim Graham did a great job assisting in the process. He also had patterns and veneers available to take home to create your coaster set. We would like you to bring your coasters to our November meeting to show all of us what you did. 3

Toy Program Update Thanks Mike for hosting the Toy Party and for all the effort you put into making toys.

We had a good showing of the usual toy makers, including Jim Graham, Don Borchardt, Jim Stramer, Patrick Heilman, Dan Cornwell, Mike Morand and Jack Bloomfield. We have over 1700 completed toys with many more close to being finished. There is one more workshop this year. That will be at Don Borchardt s shop at 8:00 on FRIDAY NOV 21st. The workshop will be the 3rd Friday of the month because of Thanksgiving. We will place a little more effort into in completing the final stages of toy production so we can make delivery in December. Please finish up any toys you may be working on at home so they can be distributed to our charities in December. There will not be a workshop in December. Instead we will package up and deliver the completed toys we have worked so hard on this year. We will meet at Larry Olson s on FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5th. Please mark this date on your calendar and plan to attend. You will have a chance to see the variety of toys we have completed this year. We have had over 2 dozen people involved in toy making this year producing quality toys. There are more painted puzzles this year, more complicated toys, and a greater variety of toys. The better toys did take extra time and effort. Thanks for the extra effort from everyone involved in the program. There will be many happy kids this year because of your effort. 7 Upcoming Events Dear Friends of Orange County Woodcraft Meet Chuck Collins - our Scrollsaw and Intarsia instructor: Chuck has been scrolling for about 12 years and has won numerous awards for his work at the Orange County Fair, San Diego Fair and at The Woodworking Shows. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Scroll Saw Association of the World and is a past President of the Orange County Scroll Saw Association. While he enjoys all forms of scroll sawing, he has really excelled at Intarsia and compound cutting. Chuck teaches our Basic Scroll Saw class where attendees learn all of the different types of cuts. The skills they learn in the class can be used in their future projects. Chuck s style of teaching is relaxed and informative and is the reason so many of his students take his intermediate classes. Projects he selects for the classes assure the students that they will leave the class with completed projects and new skills. Come join Chuck for the Intarsia Christmas ornament class Saturday, November 15, 2014 from 9 AM to 5 PM and learn the basics of Intarsia. November Meeting We ask you to bring in your Thanksgiving projects and your coasters from the October presentation to show and tell. If you have ideas for Christmas projects, bring them along to share with the members. Chuck Collins will demonstrate how to make Inlay Ornaments and will have copies of 10 different Inlay patterns that you can have to make your own ornaments. A side benefit to making these inlay ornaments is that you cut one project and end up with three completed projects. Don t worry if this does not make sense now, just come to the November meeting and find out how this is done. This may be a great idea for you to make something for the ornament exchange at our Christmas party in December. 7

A big thank you also goes to all of our members who signed up to work the booth. Unfortunately, we did not have a booth at this year s show. The day before the show started, LaVaun received a phone call stating that there was no room for any of the Guilds or Clubs to have a booth inside, at the show. If, however, we wanted to provide our own pop up shade and our own generator, we could set up outside the show each morning and would have to tear down each evening. The decision was made not to do this, therefore, we did not have a booth at this year s show. They did offer free admission to the people signed up to work in the booth. As a side note, Chuck Collins won the People s Choice award in the Project Showcase at the show for his Black Rhino Intarsia. Congratulations Chuck. 8
