Oakville

OMFC Fliteline 2 Attention: All Potential Wings Students Ground School this year is Tuesday, May 7:00 pm ALL NEW STUDENTS MUST PRE-REGISTER WITH THE CFI BY MAY 3rd CFI: Brian Anderson brian@virtuhost.com Minutes of February Meeting The February meeting was brought to order at 7:30 pm by President Terry Sears on Monday, February 4th with 41 members and two guests present. Erik Genzer informed us that there was only one table still free for the upcoming Swap Meet, and he expects that to be gone by the weekend. Bert Armstrong gave us an update on the new Web Site; it is now available to the membership as a link from the old site. The design of the new site is largely due to the efforts of Dave Perry; Bert is now in the process of moving the content from one site to the other. Jack Linghorne had brought a couple of boxes of model magazines for the members Thanks Jack! Looked like most of them found a new home by the end of the meeting. (regular exterior) can be applied over wood or fabric the trick is to thin it with windshield washer fluid and also add Floetrol, then let the paint dry for a couple of weeks before adding the clearcoat (in Ron s case, Krylon rattle- can clear). Ron found a lot of documentation on this process at the Roy Vaillancourt website: John Pretty presented his new Bucker Jungmeister. This is a 43 span model weighing about 7 lbs, and powered by an OS.55 two-stroke. John had quite the adventure just getting the kit from Arizona, as it was delayed several times coming across the border, as well as customs wanting $500 to clear it. Ron Barr gave us a brief summary of his use of latex paint for finishing a model, and his results using a brush, not a spray gun!! Ron says that the latex John Pretty s Bucker Jungmeister Some samples of Ron Barr s latex finished structures When the kit finally arrived, it was damaged. John sent it back, and got the same kit in return!! Then the insurance sent him a second one!! In any case, John was not impressed with the kit as he had to do a lot of redesign to get it together properly.

OMFC Fliteline 3 We then broke for coffee and social and a chance to buy draw tickets, followed by the customary raffle. One of the features of the meeting was to have been the display and fitting of possible club jackets and tees, but for a second month in a row the supplier was a no-show. Time to move on?! Our Guest speaker this month was Ray Munro, president of the SOGGI club (Southern Ontario Glider Group Inc.) Ray had a couple of models with him to highlight some of the activities carried out at his club, and Jack Linghorne, who is also a member of SOGGI, had another. Ray told us that, like all of us in the hobby, gliding enthusiasts have been greatly affected by the advances in electric technology. While the purists still like winch or hand launched models, electric power is quickly becoming the preferred method of getting up into glider air. Available are special An example of a discus-launch glider a 1.5m Akcent2 proficiency levels based on the number of increasingly difficult tasks you must perform. For example, Level V requires a 10 km cross-country flight, a 2 hr. duration flight and high standing in at least 6 contests!! As you can see, by no means easy! Not quite the commonly held picture of someone sitting in a lawn chair at the field watching a model amble across the sky! These competition machines are all composite construction (CF or Kevlar), and the bigger ones run to well over $2000. Our thanks to Ray for a fascinating look at the world of gliders! Jack Linghornes s electric 2m GP Spectra motor cut-off devices that limit the run time of the motor based on altitude, thus levelling the field at competitions. Ray showed us an example of a discus-launch glider this is a wild event where the models are launched by holding them by a wing-tip and then spinning around and launching like a discus thrower!! Must be quite a sight to see five or six of these being launched at the same time!! Gliding enthusiasts seem to be a very, very competitive bunch they have an organization called the League of Silent Flight, which consists of five 3.8m winch-launch glider Icon 2

OMFC Fliteline 4 OMFC Toronto West Swap Meet The weather gods smiled on OMFC s annual swap meet this year. On the Friday preceding the meet, we had a major snowstorm, dumping somewhere around 25 cm of snow, cancelling schools and generally disrupting everyday activities. Saturday dawned clear and bright, allowing the road crews to clear the roads just for us, permitting hoards of excited and anxious model enthusiasts to attend our annual OMFC, Toronto West Swap Meet. Sunday morning dawned clear and bright, although cold. The outside temperature was -18C as I was driving down to the Union Hall to get started. It takes brave (if not foolhardy) model enthusiasts to come out in that sort of weather to look over planes and parts one wants to buy. In all, we had 22 tables rented, along with a club table. Attendance was up this year by about 20 people, bringing paid attendance to 109. The results of the swap meet follow: Income Tables Revenue $ Entrance Fees $ Total Revenues $ Expenses Advertising (2 insertions) $ Room Rental $65.00 Total Expenses $ Contribution towards Club Finances: $410.20

OMFC Fliteline 5 Based on the number of people leaving the meet with their hands full of airplanes and parts I would judge that we were once again successful. A couple of people who rented tables told me that they always do well at our swap meet, so we have a good reputation. On a personal note, I will be retiring from the college in the spring of this year and plan to spend the foreseeable winters in a warmer climate, so I will not be involved with our annual swap meet for a few years. I would like at this time to take a moment to thank the many people who have helped me with the many, many jobs that had to be done to make the swap meets the success they have been. Especially high on the list are Terry Sears, Rasheed Juman, and my wife Nicole, who has taken care of the admissions every year. In future, Rasheed will be co-ordinating the swap meet as I get set to fly airplanes, cycle, golf, and count waves lapping the beach in the Florida sun in the coming winters. The best of the New Year to you all, and I will see you at the flying field in the spring. Erik

OMFC Fliteline 6 GWS Formosa Workshop As you remember, at our January Meeting, Clair Murray of the EMFSO gave a us a presentation on the Formosa class electric pylon racing events. Some of our members showed a great deal of interest in this for the upcoming season, and had a lot of questions regarding the assembly, construction, and configuration of these models. Clair graciously agreed to return to Oakville and hold a workshop, where the interested people would get a chance to assemble one of these models with someone there to provide guidance and helpful hints. That workshop was held on Saturday, February 2nd, from 10 till 4, and was attended by Terry Sears, Ron Brown, Denis Loo, Bob Hudson, Jim Daly and Rick Wilson of our club. All had a GWS Formosa kit, along with tools, glues and special materials needed (like wood or carbon fiber spars etc.) The day turned out to be a very interesting work session while the Formosa comes with instructions, these are not necessarily the best, and it was a definite benefit to have someone there who had previously built this model. Some of our guys definitely had competition in mind every gram of weight was evaluated, and there was quite a lot of carbon fiber in evidence. Look forward to seeing some of these models when we hold a Formosa race at our Electric Fun Fly in June!!

OMFC Fliteline 7 TS Cat s Cradle Karl Mueller The modeling community lost another of its long-time, illustrious members on January 29th, when Karl Mueller passed away after a long battle with cancer. Karl was an OMFC member from 1984 to 2009, as well as being a member of a number of other local clubs. He was extremely active in the Precision Aerobatics side of our sport, having taken part as both a competitor and judge at the national and international levels. He was also active with MAAC, having served on the Precision Aerobatics committee for a number of years. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Karl s family and friends.
