Micro-STAR Potential Contribution to Human Safety and Security Toto Marnanto Kadri Aeronautics Electronic Technology Center National Institute of Aeronautics and Space - LAPAN The 16 th Session of Asia Pacific Space Agency Forum Bangkok, Thailand January 26-29, 2010
STAR Program Objectives Opportunity of capacity building for space agency staff of APRSAF community. Small satellite technology capacity building program. Increase number of earth observation satellites to satisfy needs and as solution to problems in Asia Pacific Region in the future. Goal of Micro Star To build capacity of Asian space organizations to design and develop whole system of small satellite by creating opportunity of STAR Program members to design and develop a micro-satellite ( kg) in house using self-built Micro STAR satellite with support of related organization s experts.
Increasing utilization of micro- and small-satellites for applicable and scientific space utilization. Advanced Micro STAR satellite bus for applicable mission payload resources for Asia Pacific Region. As an example a number of potential mission proposals for Micro STAR are discussed at the 2 nd STAR Program Technical Workshop, Bangkok, December 2-3, 2009, as follows: - Seismo - Electromagnetic Ionosphere Monitor - Global Positioning System Radio Occultation (GPS RO) - Earth Observation - Small Satellite Multi Mode Transponder (SMTP)
Seismo Electromagnetic Ionosphere Monitor Instruments: Impedance probe Electron temperature probe GPS occultation receiver Applications: Ionospheric/atmospheric science and engineering Establishing proof of pre seismic ionospheric precursors based on the reliable ionospheric model Objective: Statistical evaluation of seismo electromagnetical phenomena Research on lithosphere atmosphere ionosphere (LAI) coupling mechanism Expected scientific research contribution for information on earthquake incident. Earthquakes have caused extensive human fatality, suffering and property damage.
GPS Radio Occultation Instruments: GPS RO payload Applications: - Studies of atmosphere dynamics and weather predicions - Improve weather prediction accuracy - Detailed temperature fluctuations Objective: - Accurate forecast of severe weather, monitoring global warming and space weather monitoring - Heavy rainfall monitoring - Typhoon generation monitoring Contribution to severe weather affected countries.
Earth Observation Options: Line scanner multi-spectral imaging sensor 2 D digital photo or video color camera Specification shall be useful for Asia Pacific earth observation applications, and Micro STAR (micro satellite) capacity. A proposed camera system: LAPAN-TUBSAT satellite payload Sony video camera and Nikon lens with 6 m ground resolution and 3,5 km ground coverage at 635 km orbit altitude.
Soekarno-Hatta Airport Jakarta Earth Observation Camera Instruments: Earth Observation camera. Applications: Earth Observation data to support disaster mitigation efforts, as well as for monitoring of land use, natural resources and environment. LAPAN-TUBSAT satellite data Objective: - Spatial information of disaster effected areas; - Monitoring of land use, natural resources and environment. Contribution of Earth Observation data to provide spatial information for disaster mitigation, land use, natural resources and environment.
Small Satellite Multi Mode Transponder (SMTP) Space communication frequency is a limited resource. Use of multi access method provide same communication frequency for use by more satellites. Instruments: SMTP on micro satellite for space communication. Extensive use of space communication frequencies Application: Promote the use of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) for space communication to provide a solution to frequency depletion. Objective: Same communication frequency can be used by many satellites and decrease costs. Experiment on efficient and effective use of frequency for satellite communication. More MTP ground equipment are required.
Conclusion Proposed Micro STAR satellite utilization: - Capacity building for Asian space organizations to design and develop whole system of small satellite; - Proposed joint mission utilizations for Asia Pacific region, e.g. - Establishing scientific proof of pre-seismic ionospheric precursors based on the reliable ionospheric model; - Provide more accurate forecast of severe weather, monitoring global warming and space weather monitoring; - Earth observation data applications for Asia Pacific; - Promote efficient and effective use of space communication frequency. From the discussions on proposed mission payloads of Micro STAR satellite during 2 nd STAR Program Technical Workshop it could be concluded that Micro STAR satellite have potential advantageous space applications for the Asia Pacific region.
