2 WELCOME WE CREATE PHOTOGRAPHERS Welcome to BA (Hons) Photography. In this guide you will find the information you need to help you settle in to your studies at UCA Farnham this September. You are joining a course with a distinguished history of more than 60 years, which is taught by practicing photographers, artists, and writers. As a photography student, you will benefit from numerous facilities, including colour and black and white darkrooms, film-processing facilities for colour and black and white film, a dedicated digital area, a wide range of photographic equipment available to hire, fully-equipped photographic studios and an excellent range of contemporary and historical books, ebooks and journals. The course includes an introduction to the essential skills and knowledge needed to establish a critical practice and study during your time here. You will explore analogue and digital photography, studio practice, documentary photography, city and landscape/nature photography, photography history and theory, and have the chance to be part of study visits and a field trip abroad. Later in the course you will participate in exhibitions and work experience, while developing your own research and practice with increasing independence. It has allowed my dreams and ideas to become reality, and exploration has become an exciting and productive aspect of my work. 3 PRE-ARRIVAL In this section you will find a list of activities that we ask you to complete before you arrive to start your course in September. EQUIPMEMT Here is a list of equipment that you should bring with you on your first day in September, we have noted some of our personal reccommendations to help you. READING LIST For the course you are advised to purchase and begin reading some or all of the following from the list below. These books should be available to order through local bookshops. CAMERA - 35mm SLR Film Camera (The simpler the better, it must have manual control, and should allow for modification of film speeds through DX code reading) - Standard lens (either 35mm or 50mm) - Canon or Nikon are the preferred makes We do not recommend the purchase of a zoom lens at this stage. OTHER RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT -Canon A-1/A-E1 or a Nikon FE/FM (Both available on Ebay and range from A wide angle lens (24, 28 or 35mm) is also very useful; then (lower priority) a long focus lens (100/135mm). -Zoom lenses covering approximately 28 70mm are a good solution. 1 x Negative File Binder (Kenro is recommended, you can purchase these through 7Dayshop, Silverprint, Process Supplies for roughly 10) -1 x Pack of 35mm Clear Plastic Neg Sleeves. ( co.uk/kenro-clear- Negative-Storageringbinder/dp/ B002LIP9KU ) -Agfa Lupe or similar magnifier for looking at contact sheets 1 x Magnifying Loupe (7DayShop, SilverPrint, Process -1 x Lint Free Gloves for Handling Negatives -1 x Lens Cleaning Cloth -Focus Finder grain magnifier for use with enlargers. (Paterson Micro Focus Finder recommended). -You will need a flash gun. If you haven t got one, wait until you join us and we can advise you -Small masking frame for prints (10 x 8 or 12 x 10 ) bigger if you prefer / can afford it. Again, if in doubt wait for advice from tutors We also suggest that the students arrive with a small stock of film and paper: -10 x Ilford HP5 400 ISO -10 x Kodak Portra x 100 Sheets of Ilford MulitGrade ResinCoated Paper/ A4 Size (this makes producing contact sheets through the clear neg. sleeves super easy)/ Lustre Finish (Silverprint/ Process -1 x 50 Sheets 12 x10 Fuji Crystal Archive Colour Paper/ Lustre Finish In terms of digital technology, the course at Farnham uses Photoshop on Apple computers. If you re considering an IT purchase, it is recommended that you wait until you are enrolled at UCA. Apple has a UCA discounted store, you ll save around 10% on the standard prices for computers. -Students also benefit from having both a USB memory stick [of at least 32GB capacity] and their own hard drive -2TB is recommended as you will need to constantly backup your work and move large files around. 4 EQUIPMENT LIST COURSE COSTS VISITS Students also benefit from having both a USB memory stick and their own hard drive (250GB or larger is recommended) to move large files around. Recommended suppliers include: - Firstcall photographic Web-based mail order company with a huge catalogue selling cameras, darkroom supplies and film as well as digital equipment and paper. No second-hand equipment. -London Camera Exchange Long-established chain of camera shops with particularly good guaranteed second-hand cameras. Visit your local branch if possible. -Calumet Photo Provide discount cards for UCA students. NB: The University has no financial agreements etc. with any of these retailers. Recommendations are based on staff and student experience. There is a small art supplies shop on campus which can supply the smaller items required such as craft knives, scissors, pens and pencils etc. They do stock a limited range of photographic papers and films but most students use more specialist suppliers for most of their requirements. If liable for tuition and registration fees these will need to be paid separately. Information on these fees can be found here: www ucreative.ac.uk/ fees-financialsupport Costs will vary according to the kind of work you produce. Staff will be able to advise you on how to pay reasonable prices for materials such as paper and film. It is recommended that you budget around 500 1,000 for materials per year. It is possible to work on a budget much lower than this. There will be, on average, two to three one-day study visits per term and approximately 50 should be budgeted for each of these. The field trip usually costs around 300 and a further 200 approximately should be budgeted for expenses while on the trip. There will be, on average, two one-day study visits in each of the terms during Stage One and Stage Two. These are often visits where students and staff meet in London to visit exhibitions and sometimes to attend talks. There is usually also a one-day visit to the Brighton Photo Biennial (BPB). Each student will have the opportunity to join a field trip abroad. This is likely to last for five to seven days and be based in a city such as Berlin or Paris.
