1 SUMMER PROGRAM 2017 Course title: Photography through the Lens of Paris Meeting Times and Days: June June 23, 2017, Monday through Friday, from 9am to 5pm (with a one- - - hour lunch break, usually pm) Instructor: Jo- - - ey Tang COURSE DESCRIPTION Through this course, you will learn a brief history of photography, from Daguerreotype to contemporary fashion photography, as well as darkroom photography techniques, from developing black and white 35mm negative film to making photograms. Paris will serve as the iconic backdrop as well as the focus of our course, as we build a working knowledge, tour the city through its photographic past while visiting some of the world s best collections of historical and contemporary photography, and meeting some of the interesting key players and up- - - and- - - comers in the exciting and expanded field of photography. We will take a much- - - needed break from our mobile devices and Instagram accounts. How do we make decisions when we are faced with a limited amount of images we could make? This course will reconsider what it means to record an image in this contemporary age, teach us how to talk about our images in a technical and art- - - historically informed way, and the knowledge of working with manual cameras with real shutter and real lens filters. LEARNING OUTCOMES You will gain a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the photographic medium, experience the wealth of resources available in Paris, as well as position yourself for future endeavors, such as internships, further education in the arts, and artist residencies. An exhibition of works by you and your peers will be staged in a gallery setting. SITES VISITS Centre Pompidou Jeu de Paume Maison Européenne de la Photographie Palais de Tokyo Emerging contemporary galleries in Belleville and/or Marais neighborhoods Jardin Tuileries Île- - - Saint- - - Louis
