1 Course: HUA 130 Section: Beginning Photography Rm: B326 Tues/Thurs 9:15-1 pm 1-2pm lab LAGCC CUNY Instructor: Professor Jaimie Lyle Gordon SYLLABUS BEGINNING PHOTOGRAPHY -SHORT SUMMER COURSE Course Blog: Please do not send to my CUNY address, I do not use it. I check my hotmail account once a day, so please be patient if you are waiting for an answer from me. Please put your name and LAGCC into the subject line. Please immediately SEND ME AN with ADD ME in the subject line, SO I CAN ADD YOU TO MY CLASS MAILING LIST and communicate with you. Course Description: This is an introductory level photography course which will introduce students to understanding photography as a visual means of personal self expression. Students will study both the technical and artistic aspects of making photographs, as well as the critical discourse of understanding, editing, and presenting photographs. Photo majors will be expected to work in the darkroom during open lab time to practice their printing skills in preparation for intermediate photography. Contact sheets and basic printing proficiency will be required, additional darkroom printing will be optional for non photo majors, but required for photo majors. All students are required to watch the lab safety lecture and follow lab procedures. This is a very short intensive course, only 6 weeks with 2 sessions per week, so each session will cover a lot of material, and students will have the opportunity to work in both film and digital format Each student will produce a photography book on blurb.com with a theme and demonstration of all assignment techniques, minimum requirement of 30 final images for the book, including the front and back covers. If you already have an idea in mind, please let me know, so you can shoot with more intention towards your final presentation, otherwise, as I edit your photographs with you, we will see the ideas that are emerging from your images. You will not have time to order the book, however, you will show it as a book presentation via projector screen during last class. Students will learn essential photographic techniques via weekly lecture, and assignments. There will be follow up tips, comparisons to master photographs, and suggestions on my blogsite for each assignment. Students will be required to shoot with a film camera using b/w traditional film, but also may choose to work in digital format, as well. There will be a film processing demonstration, and students will have access to process their b/w film during class and during open lab hours. Students will learn digital editing and scanning basics in the computer lab. You will be scanning your negative film and uploading these images into book, or uploading edited digital images directly. You will also have the opportunity to make high quality inkjet prints for b/w film or color digital files. There will be two darkroom session demonstrations of basic fundamentals of black and white printing skills, however, the darkroom will only be available during open lab hours and not during future class time. Areas of study and application will include: b/w film processing and printing, digital basics, lighting concepts, film exposure and camera features/modes, camera and shooting techniques, editing strategies, photographic (narrative and abstract) book design, aesthetics of visual perception, dynamics of composition, and interpretative visual writing methods. Student work will be critiqued on the basis of creative conception, technical execution, effort and intention of your semester book project. Photographic techniques, stylistic trends, and subsequent work and ideas of influential photographers will be shown and discussed throughout the semester in the context of the technical assignments as both inspiration and knowledge, and consideration of subject matter. There will be an emphasis put on the understanding of "snapshot" vs "photograph", and the suggested meanings and interpretations of these descriptions. The structure of seeing, and organization of details, and context of meaning will be examined through example.
2 Course Objective: Through individualized instructor reviews of your photographs, and participation in class critique-discussion sessions and writing exercises, students will gradually begin to develop a visual vocabulary and self awareness about image-making. Analyzing the photographic imagination and technical skills of others will help give the student an ability to articulate their own creative endeavors, thus helping them to create work with greater intention and expertise. The purpose of this course is to serve as the foundation for understanding and utilize photography as an expressive art form. The individual aspiration for each student is to find and communicate their own unique visual viewpoint through conceptual and technical considerations. Course Requirements: The following criteria will be used to evaluate your final grade for this course. If you are having a problem completing any of these requirements, please see me immediately for assistance. I will notify each of you of your progress throughout the semester See below for description of grading requirements and percentages. -Attendance, Effort, Class Participation 5% Missed classes and chronic lateness will affect your overall grade. If you know in advance you will be forced to miss a class, please notify me. More than 1 sequential absence due to a medical reason requires a doctor's note. It is your responsibility to contact a fellow student for help in any missed demonstrations or lectures. Class participation is critical. I need to know you are working steadily, not playing catch-up. I cannot accommodate all students equally, if I need to review too many images at once during a session. - 3 Homework Writing Exercises & critique session 20% You will write about a partner's photographs, in a method I will teach you, that will form the basis for our last critique and presentation session. -BOOK PROJECT, SHOOTING ASSIGNMENTS 75% Subject matter is open. I want you to explore these techniques creatively. Your book will begin to take on a specific theme, and we will edit together to create the strongest presentation for the images. You will present your final book in class session #13 for your final grade evaluation and class review. We will discuss resolution and file types in class. See the scanning and printing pdf help file on my blog, for detailed instructions on how to save your images scanned from b/w film. Inside Page should have the: Your self portrait, Book Title, Author and copyright notice Under this you will put the following info: CUNY LAGCC Photography Student : (your name) All photographs copyrighted 2016 (your name) Photographic Book Project Final Presentation for Beginning Photography Course: CUNY Professor Jaimie Lyle Gordon Shooting Requirements: Minimum 8 rolls of successfully developed b/w 36 exposure film and 8 contact sheets. You may shoot assignments in any order you choose. Subject matter is open. Books will contain b/w images only. You may adjust them in photoshop or create a variation in tone if desired. Your selected negatives for the book will be scanned into computer and used digitally. SHOOTING ASSIGNMENTS Assignment #1: LIGHT & SHADOW This assignment should explore the direct relationship of light falling and the shadow or forms created by it. Assignment #2: TIME & MOTION This assignment should reflect the physical idea of movement, or conceptual idea of passage, growth, or change.
3 Assignment #3: DEPTH OF FIELD This assignment should consist of a photograph that is neither all sharp, nor all blurry should have an obvious attention to selective focus, by consciously choosing to make one part of image sharp (more) or out of focus (less). Assignment #4: SELF PORTRAIT This assignment should consist of images that you shoot of yourself. You may use a tripod, long cable release, self timer, or steady surface and a stand-in only for positioning and focus. Think of how you might relate to a particular environment, and how you envision your inner self at this moment in your life. You may also photograph a representation of yourself, or use mirrors, or reflections. Assignment #5: AN UNGUARDED MOMENT This assignment should be a moment that you capture where your subject is unaware of your presence. Perhaps you want to explore candid street photography or something more covert or voyeuristic in nature. Show us something beneath the surface of your subject, or perhaps reveal the unexpected intimacy between a photographer and stranger. Assignment #6: LANDSCAPE/Urban or Nature This assignment is about describing a place or scene. The place could be urban city like, or of the natural, organic world. It could also be something that might function as one of these, i.e. the shapes of clouds in the sky, or a nude reclining which can imitate natural forms. Assignment #7: INFORMAL PORTRAIT This assignment should be a portrait that you take of someone (or more than one) where they are aware of you, and evident that you are in control of your subject. You want to reveal their character, to capture their gestures at the moment that they reveal their essence to you. Work with someone you know well, because you will be familiar with their body language and capturing their inner spirit. You can also photograph a relationship between people. You will practice on your classmates during our photoshoot walks. Assignment #8: AN INANIMATE OBJECT This assignment should explore the structural elements of form in an object. It can be a "found" object, or you can construct or arrange a still life. Pay close attention to the quality of light, your use of background, and its effects. Assignment #9: ANGLE OF VIEW This assignment should challenge you to photograph from a different physical perspective than eye level or to use a part of the image to frame another part of the scene. Look up, look down, look around, look through. Assignment #10: MANIPULATED IMAGE-ABSTRACTION-DISTORTION-MACRO CLOSE This assignment might be a lucky accident, it might be a photograph that is more like a painting, it might be a texture, it might be a deconstruction of some form into another, it might be completely abstract, or even recognizable. It could also be a sequential pairing of images, or a montage, collage, or double exposure, or a relationship between text and image, or a detail close-up. CLASS CONDUCT: *COMPUTERS IN CLASSROOM ARE ONLY TO BE USED FOR CLASS ASSIGNMENTS AND PHOTO EDITING DURING CLASS TIME. NO UNRELATED INTERNET BROWSING ALLOWED. PLEASE TURN OFF YOUR PHONES, AND NO TEXTING, DURING LECTURE, DEMONSTRATIONS, OR DISCUSSIONS. After lecture period or post. demonstrations, you will work on your scans and meet with me individually, LAST HOUR OF CLASS IS CONSIDERED YOUR Independent LAB HOUR, you will need to vacate the classroom and move into the lab computer lab-as a teacher must be present in the classroom.. Your kindness and helpfulness to one another is appreciated and noticed. There is no cell phone usage allowed in the darkroom or any beverages or food in the lab facility or wearing of open toed shoes.
