1 Contact Course Description Goals Digital Photography Course Syllabus Mr. Shukers This class is designed to impart a technical, theoretical, and historical foundation to the beginning digital art photographer. We will create HUNDREDS of photographs. The initial emphasis will be on the artist's composition, focusing particularly on technique, image creation, and manipulation. The Elements of Art and the Principles of Design will provide a sound platform of formal composition and our assignments will be a broad-based approach to meaning-making in art. We will look at the work of many photographers. Slide lectures and discussions will focus on both traditional and contemporary aesthetic and social themes and issues concerning the art of photography. The primary aims of this course are, in the short term to inspire the student to cultivate a deeper appreciation and understanding of photographs, and the long-term goal of generating confidence to make selfmotivated, artful, photographic images. 1. Students will learn how to create creative/interesting/striking/beautiful/artful photography!! 2. Students will learn how to write thoughtful, interesting, and insightful critiques and presentations about photography. 3. Students will learn about the brief, but influential history of photography and digital arts. Objectives 1. Emphasis for student success is placed on a thorough understanding of all Elements and Principles of art in Photography. Composition is of utmost importance. 2. Students will use point- and- shoot cameras, and/or cell phone cameras to create good photography through relatively inexpensive technology. DSLR cameras are not required for this class, but are encouraged if the student has that style of camera at their disposal. 3. Students will use and review free photo editing software to prove photography can be edited well through free internet software. (Gimp, Pxlr, Instagram, etc.) 4. Students will learn the basics of photo editing through the use of Photoshop. 5. Students will learn about and create basic commercial art/graphic art images. 6. Students will read, write, discuss, and apply new knowledge of all concepts taught for a specific element of photography by writing a detailed essay/description of a successful photograph discovered during their internet research. Photography used for this essay should have that element of photography evident and easily identifiable. 7. Students will read, write, discuss, and apply new knowledge of a specific element of photography by writing several mini- descriptions of successful photography discovered during their internet research. Photography used in mini- descriptions should have that specific part of an element of photography evident and easily identifiable.
2 8. Students will practice group presentations/public speaking by producing well designed/written PowerPoint documents and presenting their information to the class. Grading Criteria The following factors will influence the student assessment: 1. Participation, including class discussions, critiques, and attendance. Also included in this category will be effort and enthusiasm, courtesy and appropriate studio etiquette. 2. Excellence and punctuality of assignments a. Late assignments will receive a slight grade reduction with two weeks to be completed and turned in for credit; no late assignments will accepted beyond that time. b. All on-time assignments except the final project may be reworked after the due date for a higher grade if improvements are evident. c. Performance on homework and other projects, as assigned. Plagiarism and Copyright Statement Classroom Conduct Plagiarism is stealing! If you represent the ideas of another as your own -- and I mean words or pictures -- you are committing plagiarism and copyright laws. Plagiarism is not acceptable and will be grounds for failing the assignment. These offenses could also be punishable by law. Do not cause disturbances in class. Please do not chat while the teacher is lecturing and during class discussions and critiques. Make an effort to be courteous to the teacher and remain vertical during all classroom activities. Please do not handle other student's work unless unavoidable. If you must touch another student's artwork please handle them as if they were your own. If you are unsure what to do regarding any studio activity or cleanup procedure, ask the teacher without hesitation.
