1 Communications Design Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 ABSTRACT Communication Design introduces basic usage of digital cameras and enhancement of photographs using software applications. Demonstrations and assignments provide students with the ability to compose, edit and retouch digital photographs. Students explore and create printed and web based projects through Adobe applications. The skills and knowledge acquired in Communication Design transfer to applications such as publishing newsletters, web site production and capturing sports and other school and real world events through photography. Successful completion of Communication Design fulfills the New Jersey graduation requirement in Visual and Performing Arts.

Content: Elements and Principles of Design The History of Photography Techniques of Photography Introduction to Digital Photography Traditional versus Digital Photography? Skills and Topics: Identify the elements and principles of art Assess the presence of the elements and principles of design in sample photographs Analyze the elements and principles of design in a personal photograph Determine the proper procedure to ensure successful film Create a timeline of the history of photography using technology Investigate the contributions of early photographers to the development of an art form Assess the impact of life experiences and career choices on the work of photographers Assess the traditional use of the SLR (single lens reflex) camera the outcome of different techniques in a variety of sample photographs Select the appropriate technique to achieve a variety of desired results Analyze the use of Investigate the uses of the digital camera Determine the options and their uses available on a digital camera the features and uses of the single lens reflex camera and the digital camera Assess the steps necessary to process Assess the steps necessary to produce a photograph using traditional techniques the steps necessary to produce a digital photograph with those steps necessary to produce a traditional photograph Determine film processing technique
