2 NATIONAL CERTIFICATE MODULE: UNIT SPECIFICATION STATEMENT OF STANDARDS UNIT NUMBER: UNIT TITLE: PHOTOGRAPHY: INTRODUCTION TO PORTRAITURE Acceptable performance in this unit will be the satisfactory achievement of the standards set out in this part of the specification. All sections of the statement of standards are mandatory and cannot be altered without reference to SQA. OUTCOME 1. COMPILE A RESOURCE FILE OF PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHS PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (a) (b) (c) Investigation is suitably extensive to comply with given brief. Selection of photographs is appropriate and conforms to the recognised composition of portrait photographs. Presentation of resource file is tidy and effective in enhancing the appearance of the collection of photographs. RANGE STATEMENT Investigative sources: magazines; books; newspapers. EVIDENCE REQUIREMENTS Performance evidence of the candidate's ability to compile a resource file as detailed in Performance Criteria (a)-(c), using the sources specified in the range statement. Oral and/or written explanation of the investigation, selection of photographs and presentation of resource file. 2

3 OUTCOME 2. IDENTIFY TECHNICAL FACTORS IN PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (a) (b) (c) (d) The causes of image distortion are accurately identified with regard to lens type. Factors affecting choice of camera and ancillary equipment are correctly described in terms of the desired effect. The role of reflectors is stated clearly with respect to controlling the lighting ratio. Light conditions which affect the exposure of film are described correctly. RANGE STATEMENT Lens type: standard; wide angle; long focus; zoom. Ancillary equipment: camera format; film; lenses; lighting; reflectors. Exposure factors: over and under exposure; lighting ratio; shadow and highlight detail. EVIDENCE REQUIREMENTS Oral and/or written evidence of the identification, descriptions and statement as detailed in Performance Criteria (a)-(d) across all appropriate classes in the range statement. OUTCOME 3. PHOTOGRAPH A RANGE OF SITTERS IN VARIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) Photographs conform to given brief. Control of lighting is effective for the desired effect as stated in brief. Location selected for photographing sitter is suitable for the desired effect as stated in brief. Posing of sitter is in accordance with current portrait conventions. Communication with sitter is effective and appropriate for given circumstances. 3

4 RANGE STATEMENT Portrait convention factors: style; viewpoint; composition. Sitter: peer-group; non-peer group. Equipment: camera format; film; lenses; lighting; reflectors. EVIDENCE REQUIREMENTS At least 4 photographic images must be produced by the candidate - 2 for each class of sitter specified in the range statement. At least 2 of the following lighting conditions must be used: window light tungsten lamps studio flash The photographic images should reflect all the portrait convention factors detailed in the range statement. OUTCOME 4. PRODUCE A RANGE OF PORTRAIT PRINTS PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (a) (b) (c) Contact prints are correctly produced from negatives in terms of tonal range. Selection of images for enlargement is appropriate for desired effect as stated in brief. Enlargements are produced to specifications of brief with regard to tone, exposure and contrast. RANGE STATEMENT The range for this outcome is fully expressed within the performance criteria. EVIDENCE REQUIREMENTS Performance evidence that the candidate can produce 4 different portrait prints as detailed in Performance Criteria (a)-(c). Oral and/or written explanation of the technical procedures employed in producing portrait prints

5 ASSESSMENT RECORDS In order to achieve this unit, candidates are required to present sufficient evidence that they have met all the performance criteria for each outcome within the range specified. Details of these requirements are given for each outcome. The assessment instruments used should follow the general guidance offered by the SQA assessment model and an integrative approach to assessment is encouraged. (See references at the end of support notes). Accurate records should be made of assessment instruments used showing how evidence is generated for each outcome and giving marking schemes and/or checklists, etc. Records of candidates' achievements should be kept. These records will be available for external verification. SPECIAL NEEDS In certain cases, modified outcomes and range statements can be proposed for certification. 6 NATIONAL CERTIFICATE MODULE: UNIT SPECIFICATION UNIT NUMBER SUPPORT NOTES UNIT TITLE PHOTOGRAPHY: INTRODUCTION TO PORTRAITURE SUPPORT NOTES: This part of the unit specification is offered as guidance. None of the sections of the support notes is mandatory. NOTIONAL DESIGN LENGTH: SQA allocates a notional design length to a unit on the basis of time estimated for achievement of the stated standards by a candidate whose starting point is as described in the access statement. The notional design length for this unit is 40 hours. The use of notional design length for programme design and timetabling is advisory only. PURPOSE This module may be taken as a free-standing module but it is advisable that candidates have already successfully completed NC Module Introduction to Photography. SQA publishes summaries of NC units for easy reference, publicity purposes, centre handbooks, etc. The summary statement for this unit is as follows: This module will introduce you to photographic portraiture techniques. You will learn how to photograph and pose sitters in accordance with current portrait conventions and how to control lighting conditions and use of equipment to achieve the desired effect. On completion of the module you will have produced four different portrait prints. CONTENT/CONTEXT Throughout this module safety must be stressed. Safe working practices should be an integral part of all module activities. Use of photographic equipment and materials must conform to current COSHH Regulations. Corresponding to Outcomes 1-4: 1. The content of the brief should be designed by the tutor/trainer. The number of photographs collected must be limited to avoid excessive time being spent on this aspect. Candidates should have access to investigative sources, ie. old magazines, photographic publications, colour supplements, fashion magazines, books and newspapers etc. 6

7 Performance Criterion (b): the style of images selected should follow standard conventions in terms of composition. Standards of composition for portraiture can be found in most text books illustrating portrait photographs. 2. Different lens types should be introduced to candidates even if they are not available for use by candidates. The candidate should be presented with a variety of photographic equipment. Access to photographic publications exemplifying technique and style is advised. 3. The content of the brief should be designed by the tutor/trainer. Several photographs may be taken by candidates but it is only necessary to print four selected images. Candidates should be introduced to a variety of different posing styles, lighting arrangements and portraiture styles. Examples of current portrait conventions can be found in most text books illustrating portrait photographs. The sitter from the candidate's peer group could be, for example, a fellow class member. The non-peer group sitter could be, for example, a staff member. The sitter should be directed by the candidate in terms of pose, and the surroundings should be contrived by the candidate. 4. The content of the brief should be designed by the tutor/trainer. The prints produced should be correctly exposed and should exhibit correct contrast and a satisfactory range of tone. Manufacturers' illustrated brochures on printing techniques should be made available to the candidate. APPROACHES TO GENERATING EVIDENCE A candidate-centred resource-based learning approach is recommended. During the work of the module candidates should have several opportunities to develop their practical skills, and should be assessed at appropriate points. Terminology should be presented in context throughout the module. Where the candidate is unsuccessful in achieving an outcome, provision should be made for remediation and reassessment. 7

8 ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES Centres may use the instruments of assessment which are considered to be most appropriate. Examples of instruments of assessment which could be used to generate and gather evidence of achievement are as follows: Corresponding to Outcomes 1-4: 1. Assignment to produce a resource file of portrait photography. The candidate could present his/her resource file with a written and/or oral explanation of its content. 2. Restricted response questions which will generate evidence for all the performance criteria. 3. Practical exercise to photograph a range of sitters. 4. Practical exercise to produce a range of portrait prints. Restricted response questions to assess the candidate's knowledge of technical procedures employed in producing portrait prints.
