Jill Etwistle speaks to Iverse Lightig ad DHA Desig about workig with a architect famed for her iability to compromise Photo: McAteer Photograph/Ala McAteer Glasgow has otched up a architectural coup by completig its ew trasport museum ahead of the Olympic Aquatics Cetre veue, beatig Eglad to the post with the first Zaha Hadid buildig i the UK. Hailed, predictably, as Glasgow s Guggeheim, the Riverside Museum it sits o the River Clyde where it meets the River Kelvi is a flagship of the city s Clyde Waterfrot regeeratio. Zaha Hadid Architects is ot famous for compromisig, so like every other aspect of the desig process, the lightig came i for some exactig demads. Origially ZHA isisted o a uplightig solutio. A third party therefore came up with a cocept usig uplightig projectors hidde behid vertical grillage at the cetral spie of the mai exhibitio hall. However, while it aswered the brief of keepig the three-dimesioal ceilig free of attachmets, ZHA decided it was t clea eough. 11

The origial request was to light the space without attachig aythig to the ceilig, says Iverse director Filip Vermeire. What makes them great is that they have a very strog cocept ad they keep to it. They do t take o for a aswer. It s a difficult process but you have to try ad make it work ad i the ed it pays off. It makes them what they are. Iverse looked at solutios that followed the lies of the ceilig, delieatig the uique structure. The complicatios associated with this optio were that the supportig structure ad cable cotaimet would be quite sigificat ad promiet cosiderig the full legth of the mai exhibitio hall, says Iverse s Our Suguroglu. As the ceilig is made of moulded GRG paels, the preferred alterative was a liear cotiuous light source that could be recessed i a slot ad built as part of the mouldig process. This optio elimiated the eed for additioal supports ad cable cotaimet issues as everythig could be accommodated behid the lightig slot. Havig arrived at this solutio, Iverse carried out a series of mock-ups ad calculatios for differet slot details to establish which type would perform best. The result is a 120mm-wide slot with a sigle lie of high-output cold cathode. The lamp sits flush with the frot of the slot keepig a sharp outlie of the recess, while miimisig shadowig. To create homogeeity with both daylight ad display sources, the colour temperature is 4200K (the oly poit of liaiso with display lighters DHA, 12

The source cout is kept tight: LED strips ad adjustable LED spots for closer accet lightig, CDM AR111 for log throws, T5s backlightig glass pliths ad a variable LED system for the showcases. Give the degree of daylight igress from both eds, harmoisig the colour temperature of the differet sources was a issue. DHA asked for the colour temperature of the cold cathode to be cool white, ad the used 4000K for the fluorescet ad 3000K for the LED ad metal halide sources. The result is a well-balaced trasitio that allows the eye to comfortably take i the grad daylit vistas with their excitig chages of light, ad equally appreciate the close-up views of the exhibits as they are getly lifted out from the pistachio-tited backgroud light, says DHA s Adam Grater. Photo: McAteer Photograph/Ala McAteer Picture perfect All the fittigs i the displays have iterchageable leses ad a positive lockig system Special effect The Velodrome is lit with a cotiuous ru of high-output LED tape set i a curved chael Smaller objects (cars, turbies): Fittigs were limited to two sizes of LED strip, ad a versatile adjustable accet light that could be recessed, used as a uplight, dowlight or surface mouted. The customised fittigs by Mike Stoae have 3 x 2W LEDs i a variety of beam agles. For larger displays, LEDs were set ito various legths of chael, also made by MSL, with a miiature versio for smaller features. All the fittigs have iterchageable leses ad a positive lockig system. Showcases (up to 8m log): Miimal case frames with clear glass tops ruled out fibre optics o space grouds. DHA desiged a flexible LED system the same as used o small-plith displays that ca swap betwee a strip givig a soft wash of light, ad oe mouted with adjustable spots to provide highlights. These sit i slots puched ito the frames, ad ca also be blaked out where a light is ot required. Large high-desity displays set ito walls are lit more traditioally with a fluorescet (with louvre) backgroud wash ad rows of adjustable fibre optic spots for highlights. Both tugste ad metal halide were used, depedig o the throws ad objects. Lightig colums: The display lightig is primarily from low level, but DHA also wated a dowlightig compoet. The ceilig was out as a locatio so, give this was a trasport museum, a customised modular colum seemed a appropriate solutio. Workig with MSL ad usig a stadard streetlamp pole, DHA developed a vertical stackig cassette system housig adjustable 70W CDM AR111 heads. The through-wired cassettes ca be stacked up to seve high ad idividually rotated to the desired positio. A step i time Glasgow Street is a cobbled street with period uits. The lightig chages from day to ight special features: The Velodrome, a suspeded Mobius strip used as a mout for cycles, is lit with a cotiuous ru of high-output LED tape set i a curved chael. The bikes also have three MSL pop-ups each for accet light. Glasgow Street: A cobbled street with period uits features light fittigs that match, as closely as possible, actual fixtures. Lightig chages from day to ight ad to highlight objects for audio stories. The street also features cool ad warm soft break-up washes (Source 4 Juior Zoom) ad highlights from Source 4 Pars. The ceilig is uplit with Chromafloods. The etire system is cotrolled by a set of Chilli dimmer ad relay racks. 14
