Artists display their work in participating businesses downtown Keene. It is a wonderful opportunity to show your work in a juried show with a large audience. The ArtWalk helps to cultivate a partnership between the art community and Keene businesses which promotes public access to the arts. The tour takes place in Westmoreland, Spofford & Chesterfield. Artists not having a studio in those towns can still be a part of the tour by either sharing a space with an artist in their studio or by being in downtown Westmoreland in 1 building with many artists. FINAL CALL FOR ARTISTS FINAL CALL FOR ENTRY Treasured Places : Protected Space Exhibition (Keene,NH) ALL REGIS- TRATIONS DUE RECEIVED BY APRIL 15th The Historical Society of Cheshire County has just released the prospectus & registration form for their exciting new art exhibit "Treasured Places, Protected Spaces" scheduled for May- Sept The exhibit will consist of artwork depicting historic, conservation, or other protected properties in a widespread area under the rather loose canopy of "Monadnock Region" (it covers areas as far north as Hillsborough and as far east as Milford and all the way out to the VT and MA borders on west and south). Pre-instruction drawings will be followed by demonstrations and instructional highlights from The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Dr. Betty Edwards. Exercises will focus on development of the 5 basic perceptual skills of drawing: edges, spaces, relational angles and proportion, light and shadow, and the integration of these skills. This jiffy tour of the book will help students decide which chapters to focus are most relevant for personal study after the completion of the class. 6 MAAA NEWS Ann Sawyer has a Farm Life Exhibit at the Jaffrey Civic Center through April 9. It includes her watercolors, collages, tiles, and her farm life books, "Inside The Artist's Barn" and "The Artist In Monadnock Farmyards."

7 MAAA NEWS Painting Group Every Thursday Heberton Hall All members are invited to attend the Painting Group, meeting every Thursday morning at 10:00 A.M. in Heberton Hall. Heberton Hall is located right next to the Keene Public Library and has wonderful lighting for painters. This is a joint program of the library and the Monadnock Area Artists Association. There is no charge, of course and no instruction. This is a social opportunity for artists to exchange information and perfect their art abilities. Almost all media are represented. 8 MAAA NEWS Painting the Night in Pastel Sunday, March 29 9:30 am - 4:30 pm Towns, villages and/or cities at night provide fun and intriguing opportunities as subjects. Capturing in a more free and expressive manner such things as perspective, buildings, colorful signs and window designs, streetlights, signs, people in their daily activities, cars and more will add interest, color, and action to our pastels. Pastel techniques appropriate to capturing the mood and energetic excitement of nightscapes will be presented and demonstrated by this very popular instructor. Work from your photos or sketches. All levels welcome. robertcarsten.com Fee: $135 Intaglio Printmaking Fridays, April 3 - May 29, 12:30-3:00 pm In this class we will explore traditional and nontraditional drypoint techniques. We will use copper and Plexiglas to make editions of intaglio prints. Fee: $300 Printmaking + Encaustics Fusion Thursdays, April 2 - May 28, 9:30 am - Noon Create monotypes using non-toxic Akua printmaking inks, R&F pigment sticks, Caran d Ache, and various other media. We will create layers using texture, plant material, and multiple plates. The prints will then be a base for multi-media encaustic collage pieces. Encaustic is a versatile wax based medium that allows the artist to build painterly surfaces quickly and embed collage elements. Bring gessoed boards, all other materials provided. Fee: $320 Elements of Painting with Dan Sherry Fridays, April 3 - May 15, 10:30 am - Noon Dan Sherry has spent years painting, looking at paintings, and studying them. He has distilled 20 elements that are common to all artist s paintings and drawings. By comparing artworks he ll show the recurrence of the elements and describe their functions. By becoming more familiar with these elements, we can recognize them in our work as painters and viewers. Fee: $10 suggested donation per session No Fear Still Life Saturday + Sunday, April , 9:00 am - 3:00 pm In this workshop we will study simple objects in still life to help us better understand color, atmosphere, color relationship, and form when approaching plein air landscape painting. We will work quickly in different light conditions, natural or artificial to simulate different light conditions outside. This will help us to see light affects on warm and cool colors. For example, a tree in sunlight has a warm side and a cool side and usually something in-between. But they are all green! So, we need to understand that green in sunlight will be warmer than the green in shadow. Participants will learn techniques to rip and cut paper and create personalized hard covers. 9 MAAA NEWS Asian Brush Painting: Meditations in Ink Saturday, May 2, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm Join award winning artist, Bruce Iverson in a relaxing, meditative exploration into learning the nature and techniques of Asian Brush Painting and Calligraphy. Through demonstrations and hands-on projects using the "Four Treasures", students will explore the ancient and elegant art of painting the grass orchid in the traditional hsieh-i (spontaneous) style. Previous art experience is not necessary for great results. Learn how to paint this traditional flower in ink and color with elegant and beautiful results. 10 MAAA NEWS BULK ORDERING ART SUPPLIES A discussion was held last November at our MAAA annual meeting regarding the below. Here is an update. Our focus is to possibly provide an Art supply Cooperative in the Keene as a convenience and hopefully at less costly way to obtain needed art supplies. What we need at this point to go forward is if any one is interested in ordering please me, text or give me a call will be easier as there will all the contact info. already in it. If there are other places to order from that we don't have listed please let me know. We are going try to combine products to bulk order inexpensively as possible for the quality through Cheap Joes, Utrecht, Dick Blick. If you know of others that will bulk order for better prices please let us know. Our plan is to do all this by computer as much as possible to hopefully eliminate ordering mistakes, stream line the site and ease of usability for all. Ordering items correctly will be up to you and our ability to process the orders in a timely fashion correctly. Also trying to make it possible for you to be able to pay with credit card on line. Delivery and Pick up will be at the office of Hannah Grimes down stairs. You will be responsible for pick up and calling ahead to let us know who will be picking up for you before we let it go. That's the plan so far. If you have a desire to help plan or have ever done this before and would like to share your experiences it would be greatly appreciated. Also all people involved will be expected to help at some point somehow. That's how cost is kept low for membership. Speaking of small Membership costs will cover various things like pens, tags, small stuff to get items in the right box or bag.
