1 Swing & Sway Skeleton Create an embroidered "Swing and Sway" skeleton for Halloween! This quirky character would love to hang around and haunt your home, and with step-by-step project instructions, he's easy to assemble! Simply sew out each section of the skeleton as indicated below, then fasten all the bones together the head bone connected to the neck bone, the neck bone connected to the back bone...well, you get the idea! <P> Suggested Materials: spray adhesive, white satin, fusible mesh stabilizer, metal rivets ("brads"), an awl or craft punch, water soluble stabilizer, cutaway stabilizer, double-sided fusible stiffener, black bobbin thread and ribbon. </P> STEP: 1 STEP: 2 First we ll make template shapes using a doublesided stiffener such as Floriani s Stitch n Shape. 2 STEP: 3 STEP: 4 We'll now use our outline to make a template. Cut a piece of double-sided fusible stiffener, such as Floriani's Stitch'n Shape, large enough to cover the outline. Spray adhesive on one side of the stiffener and place it over the stitched outline. STEP: 5 STEP: 6 Now embroider the stitched outline through the Stitch'n Shape. Repeat Steps 1-5 for all the Swing & Sway pieces. Using the stitched outlines as your guide, cut out each piece. Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 2 of 7

3 STEP: 7 STEP: 8 Now we ll make the appliqué templates for each of the template shapes we have just made. We recommend the use of a fusible stabilizer such as Floriani s No-Show Fusible Mesh for stability. Iron it onto your white fabric. Embroider all of the skeleton s pieces on the fabric. STEP: 9 STEP: 10 Carefully cut out all of the pieces. These will be appliquéd together in the coming steps. Each piece of the skeleton now has three pieces. Group together the three pieces for each shape: the front embroidery, the back embroidery, and the stiffener shape. Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 3 of 7

4 STEP: 11 STEP: 12 Carefully line up the front embroidery over the stiffener shape. Place fabric over the embroidery to protect it, and using an iron fuse it to the stiffener. Turn the stiffener shape over so that the embroidered side faces down. Align the back embroidery to the back side of the stiffener. STEP: 13 STEP: 14 Now the template is finished on both sides. 5 STEP: 15 STEP: 16 Repeat steps for each of the skeleton s body parts, so that the front and back of the character is finished. Now we'll apply the finishing edge to each piece. Hoop a piece of water soluble stabilizer and embroider the stitch outline for the skeleton's head. In our example, we have used Floriani's Wet'n Gone stabilizer. 6 STEP: 17 STEP: 18 Carefully line up your skeleton s head piece (which is now features both front and back sides with stiffener in between). Use a spray adhesive to keep it in place. For this step, it is preferable to use a black bobbin thread, since both sides of the stitching will be visible on the finished character. Start the embroidery machine and watch closely to make sure the zig-zag tack down stitches catch the skeleton s head. Continue running the satin outline stitch until the design is complete. STEP: 19 STEP: 20 Repeat steps for each of the skeleton's body parts, so each piece has a nice finished edge. Cut away the stabilizer as closely as possible on each piece. 7 STEP: 21 STEP: 22 Using water, dissolve the remaining stabilizer and clean each piece. With an awl or a punching tool, puncture small holes in the marked areas of each part of the skeleton.
