In the Hoop Checkbook Cover In this project, you will create a one-of-a-kind checkbook cover. STEP: 1 Gather the following supplies: ABC AquaFilm Badgemaster, embroidery spray adhesive such as Sulky KK2000, Floriani Stitch 'N Shape, Heirloom Decor #7 (CD111407FG), 14/90 sharp embroidery needles, Floriani No Show Nylon Mesh Stabilizer, Hemingworth "Spring" thread set, the In the Hoop Duo design pack, a pack of fat quarters, and applique scissors such as Hemingworth's Duckbill Applique Scissors. STEP: 3 In steps 3 through 12, we will prepare the necessary flaps for the checkbook cover. Load Checkbook Cover Piece 1 (KM86) onto your embroidery machine. Insert a new 14/90 sharp embroidery needle. Use same thread for top and bobbin. STEP: 2 Choose your outer fabric (we chose a solid) and lining fabric (we chose a print). STEP: 4 STEP: 5 Hoop one layer Badgemaster stabilizer. Stitch placement line (color 1). Remove hoop from machine. Measure and cut one piece each of outer fabric, lining fabric and Stitch N Shape stabilizer (cut each approximately 1 1/2" x 2 1/2"). STEP: 6 Spray cut piece of Stitch N Shape with spray adhesive. Place. Stitch tack down (color 2). Spray cut piece of outer fabric with spray adhesive. Place on top of placed Stitch N Shape. Stitch tack down (color 3). Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. 2 STEP: 7 STEP: 8 Remove hoop from machine and flip over. Spray and place cut piece of lining fabric. Place hoop back on machine and stitch tack down (color 4). STEP: 9 Stitch zig-zag (color 5). Remove hoop from machine and trim fabrics and Stitch N Shape close to stitching. Place hoop back on machine. Stitch satin stitch (color 6). The little flap is completed. Keep hooped. Now you will work on the large flap. STEP: 10 Stitch placement line for large flap (color 7). Remove hoop from machine and flip over. Cut a piece of outer fabric to fit placement line, plus 1/4" to 1/2" extra all around. Spray fabric with spray adhesive and place on hoop (reminder: hoop is flipped). Stitch tack down (color 8). STEP: 11 Cut a piece of Stitch N Shape to fit placement line, plus 1/4" extra all around. Spray and with spray adhesive and place in hoop. Stitch tack down (color 9). Cut a piece of lining fabric to fit placement stitch, plus 1/4" to 1/2" extra all around. Spray with adhesive and place over Stitch N Shape. Stitch tack down (color 10). STEP: 12 Stitch zig-zag (color 11). Remove hoop from machine. Trim fabrics and Stitch N Shape close to stitching. Place hoop back on machine. Stitch color 12 (edge run with double zig-zag underlay). Continue stitching color 12 (finishes with satin edging). Unhoop. Remove flaps from stablizer and set aside. Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 2 of 7
STEP: 13 In steps 14 through 26, we will prepare the checkbook cover front. STEP: 14 STEP: 15 Insert new 14/90 sharp embroidery needle. Use your standard bobbin thread. Optional: if you have the capability, combine Checkbook Cover Piece 2 (LM09) with Heirloom Decor #7 (CD111407FG) in your embroidery software. Insert three copies of Heirloom Decor #4 in a mirrored pattern squared to hoop. If your software allows, color sort for quicker embroidery. Checkbook Cover Piece 2 (LM09) should sew first. STEP: 16 STEP: 17 Hoop one layer of Floriani No Show Nylon Mesh. Stitch placement line (color 1). Cut a piece of outer fabric to fit placement line, plus 1/4" to 1/2" extra all around. Place over stitched line. Stitch tack down (color 2). STEP: 18 Stitch three copies of Heirloom Decor #7 (CD111407FG) (these will be in a single file, if you combined them in optional step 14). If you did not combine these designs in your software, be sure to rotate each design so it is square to hoop. Trim jump stitches between colors. Continue stitching until all three Heirloom Decor #7 designs are complete. Remove from hoop and trim stabilizer 1/2" away from tack down line. Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 3 of 7
STEP: 19 Load Checkbook Cover Piece 3 (LM10) onto embroidery machine. Insert new 14/90 sharp embroidery needle. Use matching thread for top and bobbin. STEP: 20 STEP: 21 Hoop one layer of Badgemaster. Stitch placement line (color 1). Spray back of the fabric you just finished embroidering. Flip hoop over. Place embroidered piece over stitched line on hoop, aligning placement lines to match. STEP: 22 Place hoop back on machine and stitch tack down (color 2). Cut a piece of Stitch N Shape to fit tack down line, plus 1/4" all around. Place. Stitch tack down (color 3). STEP: 23 Cut a piece of lining fabric to fit tack down line, plus 1/4" to 1/2" all around. Spray with spray adhesive and place. Stitch tack down (color 4). Trim fabrics and Stitch N Shape close to stitching. STEP: 24 Cut a piece of lining fabric 6 3/4" x 6". Press in half (wrong sides together). Place on hoop, meeting cut edges. Stitch zig-zag (color 5). Stitch placement line for small flap (color 6). Place down flap. (Pictured pins are for demonstration only.) Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 4 of 7
STEP: 25 STEP: 26 If at all possible, slow down machine. Stitch tack down for flap (color 7), carefully keeping flap in place by hand. STEP: 27 In steps 28 through 33, we will prepare the checkbook back cover. STEP: 29 Stitch final satin edge stitching (color 8). Remove front cover from stablizer and set aside. STEP: 28 Load Checkbook Cover Piece 4 (LM11) into embroidery machine. Insert a new 14/90 sharp embroidery needle. Use matching top and bobbin threads. STEP: 30 Hoop one layer Badgemaster. Stitch placement line (color 1). Cut a piece of outer fabric to fit placement line, plus 1/4" to 1/2" extra all around. Spray with adhesive. Flip hoop. Place fabric over stitching line. Return hoop to machine and stitch tack down (color 2). Remove hoop from machine. Cut a piece of Stitch N Shape to fit placement line, plus 1/4" extra all around. Spray with adhesive and place. Stitch tack down (color 3). Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 5 of 7
STEP: 31 STEP: 32 Cut a piece of lining fabric to fit placement line, plus 1/4" to 1/2" extra all around. Spray with adhesive and place. Stitch tack down (color 4). Cut a piece of lining fabric 6 3/4" x 6". Press in half (wrong sides together). Place on hoop, meeting cut edges. STEP: 33 Stitch tack down (color 5) and zig-zag (color 6). Trim fabrics and Stitch N Shape close to stitching. STEP: 34 In steps 35 through 37, we will complete the checkbook cover. Stitch flap placement line (color 7). Place large flap. Stitch tack down (color 8). Complete with satin edge stitching (color 9). Remove back cover from stabilizer and set aside. STEP: 35 Load Checkbook Cover Piece 5 (LM12) into embroidery machine.
