1 QuiltWorks II Appliquéd Hoodie As you prepare your children for another school year, why not make an appliqué hoodie with the use of QuiltWorks II from Designer s Gallery. If time is an issue, this project that will take less than 2 hours to create. 2 Supplies: Baby Lock sewing and embroidery machine QuiltWorks II from Designer s Gallery Scanner Purchased Hoodie ½ Yard of peace sign fabric 3 different colored fat quarters that coordinates with the peace sign fabric Baby Lock Cut-Away Soft stabilizer Temporary spray adhesive Sewing and embroidery thread General sewing and embroidery supplies Instructions At the Computer: 1. Using your scanner, following the manufacturer s directions to scan the peace sign fabric. Save the image as a jpg image to a location on your computer. 2. Open the program by clicking on the QuiltWorks II icon on the desktop. 3. To place the hoop on the workspace, click on View menu and click on Select Hoop. Select the 130mm x 180mm hoop. Click OK. 4. Click on the Grid to place the grid on the workspace. 5. To retrieve the scanned image, click on the Backdrop Tool on the top toolbar. Locate the image on the computer and click on OK. This will place a picture of the image on the workspace. (See the illustration below.) 6. 3 Click on the Line Drawing Click on the Appliqué tool located on the left toolbar. tool located on the left toolbar. Click on the Zoom tool and zoom into one of the peace signs. Since it will be big and bold, it will make it so much easier to draw the shape. Using the Line Drawing tool, left click to place points around the perimeter of the peace sign to create a circle. Hold down the Ctrl key to round the line as you place the points. Place the last point on top of the first point place. Click on the Close Shape tool to close the circle. Click on the Select tool to apply the appliqué stitches to the circle. Activate the Line Drawing tool again and draw the straight line and the two angled lines. 4 7. To change the width of the appliqué stitch, select only the circle and type in 4.0mm next to Appliqué Width in the Properties field. 8. Select the remaining areas. Right click on the mouse and select Convert to Satin stitch. These areas do not need to be appliquéd. 9. Click on Print Preview and follow the prompts to print out a template of the design. 10. Click on File Save As and save as a Working File format (.blf). Give the design the name Small Peace Sign and save as a.pes file to the media device that your embroidery machine will read. This design will be placed above the front pockets. 11. Using the same design, click on Transform under the Properties and change the size of the design to 140mm. 12. Click on Print Preview and follow the prompts to print out a template of the design. 13. Click on File Save As and save as a Working File format (.blf). Give the design the name Large Peace Sign and save as a.pes file to the media device that your embroidery machine will read. This design will be place on the back of the hoodie. At the Embroidery Machine: 1. Hoop the Cut-Away Soft stabilizer and spray with the temporary spray adhesive. 2. Pin the Small Peace Sign template to the front of the Hoodie above the pocket. 3. Place the Hoodie in the hoop and finger press smooth. 4. With the design merged onto the embroidery machine s workspace, center the needle over the cross marks on the template. 5. Remove the template from the hoop. Embroider the design using the thread colors of your choice. The first three color stops will show the Placement, Tack down and the Appliqué stitch in that order. 5 machine stops after the first color, cut a section of appliqué fabric one inch larger around than the circle and place over the Placement stitch. Select the Start button on the machine to tack down the fabric. When the machine stops place the thread color on the machine that will finish the outer edge of the appliqué. In the sample, black thread was used for all the color stops. 6. Cut away most of the stabilizer on the back side of the Hoodie. 7. Repeat these steps for the other design over the second pocket. 8. Pin the Large Peace design template to the back of the Hoodie. 9. Follow steps 1-6 to finish the hoodie.
