Mirror and Pouch This in-the-hoop project is an ingenious process that is really a lot of fun to do. The basic tutorial was provided by Linda Berg. STEP: 1 STEP: 2 Decide on the color of thread you want to use in your stitching and wind a full bobbin of matching embroidery thread - put in a new size 11 embroidery needle or a Titanium needle and lower your embroidery machine's speed to 350 if possible. You will need a piece of fabric the size of a "fat quarter" -- 25" wide x 18" high. Iron a heat-fusible backing such as Floriani's No Show Fusible Mesh onto the back of the fabric. Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 1 of 13

STEP: 3 STEP: 4 In a four inch hoop, tightly hoop and 8"x8" piece of backing weight soluble stabilizer, such as Ultra Solvy or Aquafilm Badgemaster, and spray lightly with an embroidery spray adhesive such as KK2000 or 505. Place a five inch square piece of felt on top of the soluble backing. With your fingers, press and smooth it down. STEP: 5 STEP: 6 At your embroidery machine, embroider the first two color stops. These are your placement and cutting lines for later use. Embroider color stop three, which is the text that goes around your mirror. Hint: with editing software, you could also add or change the text to add a name or a date. Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 2 of 13

STEP: 7 STEP: 8 Remove the hoop from the machine but do not unhoop the project yet! Trim the felt or fabric without cutting into the soluble stabilizer. Trim as close a you can around the outer circle and trim the inner circle of the felt or fabric as close as you can. Cut the felt only; do not cut the stabilizer. Return the hoop to the machine and embroider color stop four. This step finishes the inner circle with satin stitches. Remove the hoop from the machine, but do not unhoop the project yet. Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 3 of 13

STEP: 9 STEP: 10 Now you can remove the center circle of the soluble stabilizer. If the stabilizer you are using is a film type, like Ultra Solvy or Badgemaster, you can carefully cut and then tear the center to remove it. If you have used a fibrous type of soluble stabilizer, you will not be able to tear it away. From the fat quarter cut a piece that is 5"x5" and place wrong side up (right side down) on the table and with spray adhesive, attach a 5"x5" piece of cutaway stabilizer on top. STEP: 11 STEP: 12 Draw about a 5" circle on the cut-away stabilizer that is on top of the fabric. Spray adhesive onto the back of a 3" round mirror. Use the pencil lines as a guide and center the mirror on the cut-away stabilizer. Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 4 of 13

STEP: 13 STEP: 14 Now place the embroidered piece that is still in the hoop over the mirror on the fabric. Use the pencil lines to help you align the mirror with the open circle in the hoop. Press together and again run your fingers around the edges. It is very important to have an even area all around the mirror. The mirror will be underneath your hoop when you place it back on the machine. Carefully place the hoop on the machine smoothly and re-check the even space around the mirror and the outer circle. Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 5 of 13

STEP: 15 STEP: 16 Embroider color stop five. This will anchor everything together. When this color stop is finished stitching, remove the project from the machine but do not unhoop it yet. Turn the hoop upside down (mirror side down). Trim the fabric and cut-away stabilizer as close as you can from the bottom side of the hoop, and try not to cut into the soluble stabilizer. Return to the machine. STEP: 17 STEP: 18 Embroider color stop six. This step finishes the outer circle with satin stitches. Now, you may finally unhoop the project. Remove the remaining soluble stabilizer. Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 6 of 13

STEP: 19 STEP: 20 Trim any fabric edges, and use Fray Check fabric glue on stitches if you accidentally cut any. You should be looking very accomplished now. Check the mirror, and see! Now for the pouch, decide on the color thread you want to use in your stitching and wind a full bobbin of matching embroidery thread. Thread top and bottom with matching thread. Use Embroidery needle size 11/75 or a Titanium needle. STEP: 21 STEP: 22 Using the 5"x7" hoop, tightly hoop a 9"x12" piece of backing weight water soluble stabilizer. We used Ultra Solvy. Spray lightly with an embroidery spray adhesive and place a 6"x9" piece of tear-away stabilizer over the water soluble stabilizer. Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 7 of 13

STEP: 23 STEP: 24 Now spray an adhesive over the stabilizer and prepare to place a matching piece of fabric. If the fabric print has a direction to it, place the fabric so that it is in the correct direction when placed in the hoop. Place the hoop on the machine. Embroider step one. This is a placement and cutting line. Remove hoop from machine but do not unhoop the project. Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 8 of 13

STEP: 25 STEP: 26 Trim the fabric and Tear-away stabilizer as close as you can around the stitched line without cutting into the water soluble stabilizer. Place the matching 6"x9" fabric wrong side up, lightly spray with adhesive, and place fabric on the back (underside) of the hoop and smooth the fabric down. If your fabric has a directional pattern, place the fabric opposite to the way you placed it in the first step. Place the hoop on the machine, making sure everything stays smooth underneath. STEP: 27 STEP: 28 Embroider color stop two. This will anchor the fabric together. When this stitching is finished, remove the hoop but do not unhoop the project. Trim the fabric from the bottom of the hoop as close as you can without cutting into the water soluble stabilizer.place the hoop back on the machine. Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 9 of 13

STEP: 29 STEP: 30 Embroider color stop three. This stitches the two placement lines. Remove the hoop but do not unhoop the project. Trim any jump stitches on the front and back of the hoop. Lay a 6"x10" piece of fabric wrong side up on the table and spray embroidery adhesive one end of it. STEP: 31 STEP: 32 Lay a 6"x5" piece of tear-away stabilizer on the one end -- fold the fabric over the stabilizer and lightly spray to hold the fold in place. You will have the folded piece of fabric with the tear-away stabilizer sandwiched in the middle. If you are using directional fabric, orient the fabric so that the pattern is going in the same direction as on the fabric on which you stitched color stop one; actually matching what you have in the front of hoop right now. Match the fold of the fabric to the placement lines on the top side of the hoop and use adhesive spray to keep the folded fabric in place. Return the hoop to the machine. Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 10 of 13

STEP: 33 STEP: 34 Embroider color stop four. This is the cutting line for the fabric pocket. Remove from the machine but do not unhoop the project yet. Trim both layers of fabric and the tear-away stabilizer as close as you can; again do not cut into the water soluble stabilizer. Also remove the placement stitches from both sides from the back. Return the hoop to the machine. Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 11 of 13

STEP: 35 STEP: 36 Embroider color stop five. This will finish the pouch edges with satin stitches. When the satin edges are completed, take the hoop off the machine. You may now remove the project from the hoop. Carefully remove the pouch from the water soluble stabilizer. Trim any fabric edges that may be peeking out, but do not cut into your stitches. Mend any accidental nicks in stitches with Fray Check. STEP: 37 STEP: 38 Put your mirror in the pouch and make your fold line over the top edge of the mirror. Remove mirror and hand press the fold. Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 12 of 13

STEP: 39 Finish with a ribbon and snaps or attach hook-andloop circles with needle and thread. Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 13 of 13
