1 July 4th Sparkling Picnic Basket Cover I've topped a patriotic picnic basket that I hope will spark ideas for you. This project uses just one of the many Adorable Ideas Sparkle kits available on Embroidery.com. STEP: 1 STEP: 2 I have lined a medium bushel basket with a simple fabric liner. I ll match the top to that lining. I like to make patterns as I go, so first I traced the basket mouth onto paper, and added two inches to that traced circle. 2 STEP: 3 STEP: 4 Put notches in the pattern where the basket handles protrude. Next, use the traced pattern as a guide for cutting the material. STEP: 5 STEP: 6 Now comes the fun part: adding the embroidery embellishment. First mark the start point for the design. For smaller sewing areas, this design comes in multiple pieces. Use printed production sheets (actual size) to help you mark the start point for each piece on the fabric. The production sheets will aid in aligning the pieces. Embroider the design that comes with the kit. When I ordered my kit, I not only received the sparkle motif template in the mail with the design, but I also was able to download the design immediately from Embroidery.com, so I could get started on my project right away. 3 STEP: 7 STEP: 8 When the embroidery is finished, it s time to apply the matching sparkle motif. Peel away the paper backing. The clear film is easy to align over the embroidered design. STEP: 9 STEP: 10 Use a pressing cloth to protect the fabric, and make sure that your iron is dry and not using a steam setting. Press for 45 seconds over the entire sparkle motif. 4 STEP: 11 STEP: 12 Turn the design right side up again, and with a wooden spoon, walk across the sparkles, just giving them each a good firm press. It s important now to wait until the design is completely cooled. While we wait, let s prepare the other things we need for this project. We re going give the basket top an elastic edge. Measure around the side of the basket from handle to handle. Subtract an inch. This is the length of elastic you need. For my basket, this was 16 1/2" inches. 5 STEP: 13 STEP: 14 Cut two pieces of baby elastic. For my basket, I cut each piece 16 1/2" inches long. We'll also create ribbon closures around the basket handles. Around one basket handle, tie an attractive bow from a length of ribbon around one basket handle. Cut the ribbon off of the spool and cut it in half. Measure the length of one of your two ribbon pieces and then cut two more pieces of identical length. For my project, I used four pieces of 12" long ribbon. Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. 6 STEP: 15 STEP: 16 When the sparkle application is completely cool (mine took 30 minutes), hold the fabric down with one hand, while peeling the plastic away with the other. The effect of the shining nail heads combined with the embroidery is really quite dazzling. STEP: 17 STEP: 18 At a sewing machine, hem around the basket handle notches. For attaching the elastic and ribbon to the cover, I found it helpful to stitch with matching bobbin and top thread. Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 6 of 7

7 STEP: 19 STEP: 20 Attach one length of elastic to the underside of the basket cover. Place it about an inch away from the edge. Stitch through the elastic on the ends, and use a wide zig-zag stitch that goes over the elastic for most of the length. This maintains the elasticity. You might need to pull the elastic a little at the end to reach the handle notch. Do the same for the other elastic piece on the opposite curve of the cover. Attach each length of cut ribbon to the underside of the basket cover where the edges of elastic are attached. STEP: 21 Turn up and stitch down the edge of the basket top.
