1 Fancy Trick or Treat Bag The "Trick or Treat" collection by Anita Goodesign includes several large applique designs as well as dozens of others. This embellished bag is made of fabric and can be used for "trick or treating", as a tote bag or to decorate your home. It is made entirely of fabric and because of the unique design, is well suited to customizing. 2 STEP: 1 STEP: 2 Gather fun fabrics and trims for your bag. We used a spider web print for the base fabric inside the bag, a purple print for the front embroidered panel of the bag, an orange & yellow checkered print for the back of the bag, and a candy print for the sides of the bag. Contrasting ribbons were used to form the bag handles. You will also need a total of 30 inches of boning to stiffen the handles, and some Steam-a- Seam fusible tape to construct them. Last, we selected a feather trim and a tassel trim for the top of the bag. We also used a funky chenille yarn to finish the seams. Other things you will need are a serger, a pinking rotary blade or pinking shears, two sided fusible stabilizer, and doublecxc sided fusible hem tape. 3 STEP: 3 STEP: 4 Cut the bag base piece to measurements indicated and cut a piece of double-sided fusible stabilizer such as Appli-Kay Wonder or Steam-a seam 2 to the same size as the base piece. Front piece #1 indicates the embroidery placement center point. Choose any of the 9" tall characters in the "Trick or Treat" collection. Start with a larger piece and cut to measure after embroidering. STEP: 5 STEP: 6 Cut each piece to measure as indicated. Side #1 and back#1 have a half inch allowance for trimming. The top edge also has a seam allowance for trimming all the way across. Fuse the Appli-Kay Wonder to the wrong side of the base fabric. Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 3 of 9

4 STEP: 7 STEP: 8 The Appli-Kay Wonder peels away to reveal the sticky side. The individual pieces for the bag sections will be placed in position on this. Peel away only a small area at a time to position each section. STEP: 9 Line up the bag sections in order, and place them, one at a time, on the sticky surface. Smooth out each piece and press in place with your hand to secure. Later you will press with the iron to permanently adhere the fabrics together. STEP: 10 Remember, there are no seam allowances except at the left and right sides of the bag! The cut edges of the pieces lie right next to each other. Trim half an inch from top edge using a pinked edge, as shown on the pattern. Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 4 of 9

5 STEP: 11 STEP: 12 Cut 15 inches of boning and 15 inches of each color of ribbon. Cut four 15 inch long pieces of Steam-a- Seam tape (two pieces for each handle). Mark placement for handles on the top of the front and back pieces, as shown on the pattern. STEP: 13 STEP: 14 Using the fusible tape, fuse the boning to the wider ribbon. Layer and fuse the second ribbon to the first ribbon. Stitch through all the layers to secure. Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 5 of 9

6 STEP: 15 STEP: 16 Fold along the seam lines and feed the chenille yarn in at the same time as you feed the fabric. Leave a tail of yarn at the beginning and end. The needle thread is loose in a flatlock seam and the decorative yarn is on the top side as you run the fabric through the machine. Set up your serger for two-tread flatlocking with the blade disengaged. We fed chenille yarn into the serger as the edges were stitched. STEP: 17 STEP: 18 When you pull the seam open and flatten it out, the chenille yarn is centered over the flatlocked seam. Use a seam sealant to secure the seams and the yarn before cutting the tails off. Next, you'll trim the bag sides and make them true. The left side is trimmed to 5.5 inches wide and the right side is trimmed to 9 inches wide. Copyright(C)2006 Embroidery Central, Inc. Page 6 of 9

7 STEP: 19 STEP: 20 Now it's time to insert the handles. Peel away the sticky layer of Appli-Kay Wonder. Insert the handles where marked and stitch them in place. Press the whole bag to fuse the layers together. STEP: 21 STEP: 22 Make a mark 3/4" from top edge, layer and stitch the decorative trims on while the bag is flat. 8 STEP: 23 STEP: 24 Turn the bag inside out and mark 2 inches from the bottom edge for the hem. Align the side seams before sewing across the bottom of the bag. STEP: 25 STEP: 26 Press the bottom seam open and create a triangle fold at each end of the bag bottom. Align the side seams before sewing across the bottom of the bag. 9 STEP: 27 STEP: 28 Mark and stitch next to seam edge. It is easy to see and feel where to stitch. STEP: 29 You will have two triangular tabs that will form the bottom of the bag. STEP: 30 Turn the bag right side out and insert a piece of cardboard 5.5 x 9 inches to firm the base, if desired. The bag is finished! All the little ghouls will want one!
