1 The Common Thread Chronicle SPECIAL POINT S O F I NTER EST: Next Meeting February 13, 6:30pm Location Parker Adventist Hospital Pine A & B C H E C K L I S T : Nametag Show and Tell February Meeting Caohagan Island Quilts F E B R U A R Y Imagine visiting a tropical setting about the time that Colorado temps dip below freezing. The next meeting of Common Thread Quilt Club will feature quilts from just such a place, Caohagan Island, just a couple of kilometers from the Philippines. As is typical of a sunny place surrounded by sparkling aqua water, their fabrics are colorful and cheery, and residents make quilts there as an industry. Dana Jones, former editor at Quilter s Newsletter Magazine and several other quilt and women s publications, has a very keen interest in the quilts from this part of the world and will show a number of fiber creations of various sizes that she also will offer for sale. In addition, she will have a book about Caohagan Island quilts to sell. Come see these colorful quilts at the next CTQC meeting on Monday, Feb. 13 at 6:30 PM. There will also be a basket giveaway, and be sure to bring any Show and Tell that you may have (Valentine s themes, red and white, or winter themes especially welcome). And don t forget a nametag!

If you plan to join us, the handouts can be found online at: CommonThreadQuiltClub.com The first challenge, due at the March meeting, is Recycle/Reuse/Repurpose. The format is a 9 x 12 finished size (vertical or horizontal), and the goal of the first challenge is to try using or adding one or more materials or objects you haven t used before, something non-traditional to quilting. The finished creation can be anything as traditional as a quilt block (9 x 12 format--add a border of some kind) or as loosie-goosie as an abstract painting. So many of you helped sew, cut, donate materials, iron, and even prepare bags at home to donate to the Parker Adventist Hospital. There are some beauties there! We will have an exact count at the meeting of those done so far. Meanwhile, this will be an ongoing project for the year and we ll take bags whenever you are able to make some up and bring them. We will have fabric to choose from and some handle webbing if you d rather not buy any materials. A reminder--the finished size of the bags are approximately: 16 tall, 15 wide, and the handles no shorter than 27 (27-29 ideal) A complete instruction sheet will be available at the meeting or find it on the website. 3 International Quilt Study Center & Museum Quilt of the Month February 2017 One Patch/Checkerboard Maker unknown Circa United States Machine pieced, hand quilted Ardis & Robert James Collection This quilt also appears in Amish Quilts and the Crafting of Diverse Traditions, which is showing at Quilt House through February 4. According to the exhibition label: The Esprit clothing company, founded in San Francisco in the early 1970s, became home to a significant collection of Amish quilts after its cofounder, Doug Tompkins, visited the landmark 1971 exhibit, Abstract Design in American Quilts at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. Tompkins was smitten, and he bought his first quilt that year a red and white baskets quilt. His next two quilts were Amish, a Center Diamond and a Sunshine and Shadow, both from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. By the late 1970s quilts filled the walls of Esprit s headquarters, which it opened to visitors to take self-guided tours. Tompkins eventually limited his collecting exclusively to Amish quilts, favoring the strong graphics and simplicity of the Lancaster County community. With these great pieces of design all around them, Esprit s designers no doubt drew inspiration from the quilts. Fifty years ago, no one bothered pairing the adjective Amish with the noun quilt. Few people outside Amish settlements knew there was anything distinct about the types of patchwork bedcovers Amish families kept folded in cedar chests or displayed on their guest beds. Yet in the intervening years, Amish quilts have shifted in status from obscurity to sought-after artworks. Amish women have been making quilts since the late 1800s, but only in the 1970s, when art enthusiasts began comparing Amish quilts to abstract modernist paintings, did Amish quilts become cult objects. Collectors, curators, and designers loved the solid-colored fabrics and bold, graphic designs of classic Amish quilts, which helped transform these textiles into affordable works of art. Amish entrepreneurs responded to the quilts newfound popularity, making quilts to sell directly to outsiders. Amish, in turn, functioned as a brand name, appealing to those who wanted a handmade, authentic quilt. P A G E 3

6 From December s Meeting After the club s Christmas dinner, we reconvened at Holly s Quilt Cabin to see employee quilts from their 2016 Challenge. Their theme was Tree of Life, which was constructed in applique, traditional blocks, and various contemporary interpretations. There was also one quilt from the 2015 Challenge called Scrap Jar Stars.
