From the gold doupioni, cut two runner ends and two 5" x 14" strips. Cut two 7" x 14" strips from red doupioni. Cut two 6" x 14" strips from red dot taffeta. Cut two 5" x 14" strips from green diamond taffeta. Cut two 6 1 2" x 14" strips from green dot doupioni. Cut two 4 1 2" x 14" strips and one 8" x 14" strip from red velvet. Cut four 7" x 14" strips from stripe decorator fabric. Piecing & embroidery Note: Sew right sides together using 1 2" seam allowance. To assemble the runner top, sew the strips together as shown; each side should be symmetrical with the 8"-wide velvet strip in the center (B on page 46). Trim edges evenly, if needed. Use customizing software to combine the round flower design with two small blossoms designs, if available. Otherwise, re-hoop as needed. Hoop the stabilizer and one runner end. Center and embroider the floral design 1" from the seam at the end of the runner (use the photo as a guide). Tear away excess stabilizer. Repeat for the other end of the runner. 44 Holiday Embroidery 2007

Combine designs again if software is available. If necessary, mirror image or reverse designs. Hoop the stabilizer and center of one set of the pieced red and gold duopioni strips.

Embroider the vine design crossing the center seamline (C on page 46). Tear away excess stabilizer. Repeat for the remaining set of red and gold doupioni strips. Assembly Cut four 16" lengths each of beaded trim and tassel trim. Follow the manufacturer s directions to apply fusible web tape to the wrong side of each trim length header. Remove the paper backing from the fusible web tape lengths. Center the trim lengths over the seams as shown (D on page 46). Press the trim headers with an iron to fuse in place. Edgestitch the trims in place. Glue gimp on top of the beaded trim headers. Using the pattern tracing supplies, place the runner top on pattern tracing paper and trace around the edges. Use the pattern to cut one complete runner shape from fusible fleece. Fuse to the wrong side of the runner top following the manufacturer s directions. Cut the runner pattern in half crosswise. Use the half pattern to cut two back panels from taffeta, adding a 1 2" seam allowance to each center edge (E on page 46). Sew the center edges of the back panels together, leaving a 6" opening in the center of the seam. Pin, then sew the outer edges of the runner top and back together. Turn right side out through the opening. Press seam allowances under and slipstitch the opening closed. To add a tassel to each end of the runner, squeeze a thin, 3 4"- to 1"-diameter circle of fabric adhesive onto the fabric wrong side close to the point. Wrap the tassel hanging loop into a spiral and finger-press onto the glue (F on page 46). Piecing & embroidery Note: Use a 1 2" seam allowance and sew with right sides together. To piece each placemat top, sew a stripe border strip to each side of the red dot center panel.

Otherwise, re-hoop as needed. Hoop stabilizer and spray with temporary spray adhesive. Center one end of the placemat on the stabilizer.

Piecing & embroidery Note: Use a 1 2" seam allowance and sew with right sides together. To piece each placemat top, sew a stripe border strip to each side of the red dot center panel. Sew a gold end piece to each stripe border strip. Press seams open. Trim edges evenly, if needed. Using software, if available, combine one round flower design with two small blossoms designs. Otherwise, re-hoop as needed. Hoop stabilizer and spray with temporary spray adhesive. Center one end of the placemat on the stabilizer. Embroider the design 1 2" from the seam (use the photo as a guide). Carefully remove the fabric from the stabilizer, being careful not to ravel the fabric edges. Tear away the excess stabilizer from design. Assembly For each placemat, cut two " lengths of gold ribbon. Following the manufacturer s directions, apply fusible web tape to the wrong side of each ribbon length. Center the ribbon over the center panel side seams and fuse in place, using a press cloth. Stitch close to the ribbon edges. Place the pieced placemat top on pattern tracing paper and draw around the edges. Cut out the pattern. For each placemat, use the pattern to cut one lining piece from fusible fleece and one backing piece from green dot taffeta fabric. To finish each placemat, fuse the fleece to the pieced top wrong side. Sew the top and back pieces together, leaving an opening in the center of the lower edge. Turn right side out. Press the edges, pressing the opening seam allowances under. Slipstitch the opening closed. A Runner End Pattern B Sew strips together symmetrically with 8"-wide velvet strip in center. C Embroider design, crossing center seamline. 1 Square = 1" D Center trips over seams. Napkins Supplies Note: Supplies listed makes four napkins. 1 yard of 60"-wide red taffeta fabric Tear-away stabilizer 1 4"-wide double-sided paper-backed fusible web tape Rayon embroidery thread Embroidery design of your choice Cutting, embroidery & finishing Cut four 17" squares from the red taffeta fabric. To finish the edges of each square, follow the manufacturer s directions to apply fusible web tape along the outside edges on the right side; do not remove the paper backing. Using the paper backing as a guide, press the edges under in a doubled 1 4" hem. Remove the paper backing and fuse the edges in place. If desired, topstitch close to the edge. Hoop the stabilizer and one corner of a napkin. Embroider the leaves. Tear away the excess stabilizer. Repeat for each remaining napkin. Note: If the fabric isn t caught completely in the hoop, use either adhesive tear-away stabilizer, or spray temporary adhesive with standard tear-away. Use thread in the bobbin to match the napkin fabric to minimize the embroidery underside.
