1 Trim The Tree By Marie Duncan Make this pretty skirt to grace your Christmas tree this year! The ornaments are easy, using the Circular Attachment. The Applique stitches give gorgeous dimension to the ornaments and are SEW easy to do!!! Sewing Supplies: Circular Attachment Candlewicking Foot Clear ¼ Piecing Foot w/guide Mega Piping Foot INSPIRA Tear-A-Way stabilizer INSPIRA Stick N Fuse ll stabilizer INSPIRA embroidery needle, size Robison-Anton 40 wt. rayon embroidery thread ⅝ yard pattern making material (at least 22½ wide) Fabric marking pen 1¼ yards for lining ½ yard green dot ½ yard pink dot ⅛ yard solid pink for ornaments ⅛ yard solid green for applique Bobbin thread Sewing thread 1⅓ yards of ½ wide ribbon ⅔ yard ribbon for ties 1⅓ yards of white rat tail cord 3¾ yards of ball fringe Make the Pattern: Using the diagram to the right, mark a quarter circle with an 18 radius. Fold in half creating an eighth circle. Add ¼ seam allowance to each side. This will be your pattern for the circle segments. Cut: From pink polka dot Four segments From green polka dot Page 1 of 5

2 Four segments From INSPIRA Tear-A-Way stabilizer Four pieces 6 x 6 Four pieces 2 x 14 From INSPIRA Stick N Fuse ll stabilizer One 10 piece From pink solid Four squares 6 x 6 From green solid 12 pieces 2 x 2 Four pieces of white rat tail cord each 12 long Four pieces ½ wide ribbon each 12 long 39 x 39 for lining Sew: 1. Thread with 40 wt. Robison Anton rayon thread on top and bobbin thread in the bobbin. 2. Select A1: Set up your Circular Attachment. To snap the plate in place, insert the right prong into the needle plate and hold it in place with your thumb. Bend the attachment up slightly until the left prong slips into place. Make sure both prongs are firmly snapped in place. 4. Slide the Size Guide to 12cm. 5. Fold the green dot in half to establish the center. Measure 4 up from the outside curve and mark. This is the center of the circle. 6. Push the pivot pin through the center of the one of the pink squares. 7. Next, place the pin through the marked dot on the green dotted fabric. 8. Place Tear-A-Way Stabilizer underneath the green dotted fabric, and push the pin through it. Insert the pivot pin into the hole on the Circular Attachment. They should be stacked with the pink solid on top, then the green dotted fabric, then the stabilizer underneath. 9. Stitch the first circle. 10. Leaving the fabric pinned in place, raise the presser foot and trim away the excess fabric. 11. Select F1:2, the pre-programmed satin stitch. 12. Stitch around the ornament. Page 2 of 5

3 13. Repeat with the other three green dotted segments. 14. Remove the Circular Attachment. 15. Select stitch Y1: Touch then and you will get a pop-up showing you what you need to do. 17. Fold the tree skirt segment in half, and mark a line down the center of the ornament using a fabric marking pen. 18. Start at the top of the satin stitching and stitch the first part of the stitch. It is easiest to touch and stitch until the machine stops instead of using the foot control. 19. Insert green fabric behind the needle, snugging it up to the needle. 20. Touch and stitch until the machine stops. Place green fabric once again. 21. Repeat one more time for the third heart. 22. This time, use your foot control, place the fabric and stitch until the heart is complete. Then stop. Touch. 23. Repeat making hearts on your other three ornaments. Because we stopped the stitch in the middle on the last repeat, you reselect the stitch, to bring it back to the beginning. 24. Cut out the gray section of the template and place it over the stitched ornament. Using a fabric marker, mark a curved line on each side of the center stitched line. 25. The following are some stitches to choose from to stitch the outer lines of decorative stitching on the ornaments. D33, M2, M16 and G9. We did a different stitch on each ornament. 26. Thread with white Robison Anton 40 wt. rayon embroidery thread on top and bobbin thread in the bobbin. Page 3 of 5

4 27. Select A22, adjust the width to 3.5 and the length to Stitch between the decorative stitches as shown. 29. Fold the appliqued segments in half, and mark a line from the top of the ornament to the top of the segment. 30. Select A Snap on your Candlewicking Foot. 32. Place the 2 wide stabilizer strips behind the tree skirt where you marked the line. 33. Place the cord on the marked line. The cord will fit perfectly in the groove on the underside of the Candlewicking foot. Stitch the cord in place for the ornament to hang from. 34. Tie the striped ribbon pieces in bows. 35. Select A35, the Beltloop Stitch. It s way cool the way it sews a pre-determined amount of stitches, stops, ties of and cuts the threads!!! Stitch your bows in place along the top of the ornaments. 36. Snap on your Clear ¼ Piecing Foot. 37. Place a green dot segment right sides together with a pink dot segment. Stitch. Continue until all the segments are in pairs. 38. Then sew the pairs together, and finally the sets of four until you have your tree skirt completed. Don t forget to leave one seam open. 39. Press all the seams open. 40. Snap on your A foot. Place the ball fringe so that the balls are facing in towards the center of the circle. Stitch in place. Don t worry about where you are stitching on the tape, we will be stitching again using the Mega Piping Foot when we attach the lining and get up nice and close at that time. For now, you are just holding the ball fringe in place. 41. On a large flat surface, place your tree skirt right sides together with the lining fabric. Pin well. Cut the ⅔ yard of ribbon for ties in half. Insert the ribbons for ties on the straight edge at the top and pin in place. Page 4 of 5

5 42. Snap on your Mega Piping Foot. This foot is designed to enable you to get close to any large trims or pipings, in our case, our ball fringe. Select A1:1 left needle position straight stitch the needle position to the left, to be able to get close to the ball fringe. 43. Stitch, leaving an 8 opening along one edge of the back opening. Trim the lining. 44. Turn, press and insert INSPIRA Stick N Fuse II into the opening and press with steam to fuse. 45. Now you have a tree skirt, unlike any that your Grandma had! Page 5 of 5
