M A Y V O L U M E 3 2, I S S U E 0 5 Falls Quilt Guild May Newsletter Thank You! Here s lookin at you 2019! What a great quilt show and it wouldn t have happened without all of you. Wonderful work, show chair Annie Neiffer s leadership and all the committee chairs that made sure everything came together. May Meeting Hints, Hints, and more Hints Facilitator: Mary Ann Wattam Tuesday, May 9, 7 pm Senior Center This is your program; it s your turn to share hints and tips. What are the things you do to make your piecing and quilting easier? What are some of you storage ideas? What are some of your preps for going to quilts shows? It ll be a give and take of ideas and Mary Ann will be helping us out. Mary Ann already gave us one hint at the last meeting: Have your quilting lines disappeared before you started quilting. How about using some children s chalk to redraw the lines, then brush it off when finished. Look forward to seeing you at the meeting. Treaters: Vee Gilcher, Dottie Behling Greeters: Dottie Behling Please consider bringing refreshments and helping greet and hold quilts

Page 4 Falls Quilt Guild May 2017 Volume 32, Issue 05 Block Exchange 2017 Bowtie The 2017 Block exchange block is the 6 finished (6½ unfinished) bowtie. Remember you can join in or drop out whenever you want. Directions are available at meetings and from Diana Simkins in addition to many on-line sites. Birthday Surprise This month's birthday surprise is for member s whose birthday is in MAY. AND you have to be present to choose your surprise. Programs Needed Programs, we need programs, we need lots and lots of programs.... We ve got lots of talent in the guild. How about sharing that talent in a program? Not comfortable in front of a group? How about pairing up with a friend or several? Kay Butler agreed to do a program/make and take of the Swedish Folder Stars that she used on the quilt show ribbons. Do you want that soon with any of your fabric or closer to Christmas and use seasonal fabrics? Deb Broesder and Sandy Syvertson have volunteered to do a program in the fall after they finish all their vacations. There s also a list of program ideas on the bulletin board that came in with membership renewal. Can you do any of them? Or do you know someone who d be just perfect? Would you like to re-instate the June potluck? Let us know. Thanks again to all of you. Greeters and Treaters UFO Challenge How are you doing on your UFO lists. Remember the lists were due last month. Keep on working on them. Every FINISHED UFO shown at SHOW & TELL = one chance at the drawing for the fat quarters. These two monthly jobs grease the wheels for the meetings. The GREETER s job is two fold: 1. Greeting: Come about 20 to 30 minutes before the meeting and make sure people sign the Senior Center s sign in; help with name tags; and hand out door prize tickets 2. Show and Tell Help: Hold up the quilts so all the membership can see them. Leave quilter free to tell all about it. The TREATER s job is to bring refreshments. We ve found that 4 each for the greeters and the treaters is the ideal number. Over all, we ve been doing great with volunteering. We do need 2 more treaters for this month (May), one for August and two for December. We seem to be a little more reluctant when it comes to greeter. May needs 3, June 2, August 2, October 3, November 3, and December all 4. Please take a look at the lists (on the bulletin board) and volunteer where you can. You can also me and I ll sign you up.

Falls Quilt Guild May 2017 Volume 32, Issue 05 Page 5 Komforters for Kids Needs Your Help Martha Wood The KFK (Komforters for Kids) stash is very low. Please take a little time to whip up some child size quilts so we ll be able to keep up with the program. What an opportunity to make something easy, try out a new pattern and even practice quilting with no pressure. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. ( s & phone #s last page) (Komforters for Kids (KFK) is a project to stock crib or child (lap) size quilts to organizations who deal with children in crisis. The organizations are: Mercy Home, Great Falls, Sun Prairie, Manchester and Vaughn Fire Departments, Cascade County Sheriff s Department, Great Falls Police Department, American Red Cross, City County Health Department and the Montana Highway Patrol. ) Adopt a Bear Suzan Seery And then with your KFK left overs or orphan blocks, whip up a teddy bear size quilt. Did you know that the hospital staff has grown to depend on this program so much, they have been know to make midnight runs to the drugstore to purchase bears when our donated supply has run out. So please keep the bear quilts coming too. ( s & phone #s last page) ( Note: The Adopt-a-Bear Project is a project in which the member makes a "bear size quilt to go with a teddy bear that are then given to the pediatrics patients at Benefis Hospital, in Xray and in the emergency department.) Bulletin Board There's a Falls Quilt Guild Bulletin Board at all the meetings. Guild correspondence will be there as well shop items and non guild quilting related items. You too can post items on it. It s your bulletin board. Community service is in our blood. Below is a list of what we do as a guild as printed in the membership brochure. And I know all of you do lots for your favorite organizations. Just a reminder: The Senior Center asks all of the organization who use their facility to sponsor one of their monthly birthday parties. The FQG s turn is the 3rd Friday in July- July 21st for about 2 hours in the afternoon. We need two volunteers. You ll be responsible for getting the head table cake (usually a layer cake) cupcakes for 40ish and ice cream cups. You ll be working with 2 hostesses from the center to serve. Please let Deana know if you can be a part of this fun afternoon this year. Community Service Komforters for Kids - Komforters for Kids (KFK) is a project to stock crib or child (lap) size quilts to organizations who deal with children in crisis. The organizations are: Mercy Home, Great Falls Fire Department, Cascade County Sheriff s Department, Great Falls Police Department, American Red Cross, City County Health Department, the Montana Highway Patrol and several rural fire and emergency services. Adopt-a-Bear - Adopt-a-Bear is a project in which the member makes a "bear size quilt to go with a teddy bear. The bears with their quilts are then given to the pediatrics patients in the hospital, in X-ray and in the emergency room at Benefis Hospitals. Peace Hospice of Montana Quilt Project - The PHM Quilt Project started with a dedicated hospice nurse and continued in memory of a member s parents-in-law. The project provides quilts to the residential hospice to enhance the home-like atmosphere. Mercy Home - Each October, November and December, Falls Quilt Guild collects toiletries to give to the Mercy Home. Senior Citizens Center Birthday Party - The guild sponsors one of the monthly birthday parties during the year. We hostess the event and serve cake and ice cream. Great Falls Public Library - Annually for National Quilting Day (middle of March), the guild donates funds to the GFPL for quilting books.

Page 6 Falls Quilt Guild May 2017 Volume 32, Issue 05 From April Show and Tell From the sisters Simkins - Diana and René. Same challenge they did with the Helena Quilters Guild - two different layouts. Pretty snazzy! (Extra credit - whose is on the right and whose is on the left?) Dean Wilson had fun with her silver maple leaf. (Below) Connie s Magic Cookie Bars - Connie Brauer Ingredients: 1/2 cup butter or margarine 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs 1 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk 1 6 oz. package choc. chips (or a combination of choc. and butterscotch chips. I used 3/4 c. choc. and 1/4 butterscotch) 1 cup flaked coconut 1 cup chopped nuts Directions: Melt butter or margarine in a 13x9x2 pan. Blend in cracker crumbs with a fork. Pat onto bottom of pan. Pour sweetened condensed milk evenly over crust. Top with layer of choc. chips, coconut and nuts. Press down gently. Bake at 350 for 25 min. or until golden brown. Cool, cut into bars. Store loosely covered at room temperature. Bake at 325 if using a glass dish. Here by popular demand is Connie Brauer s recipe for Magic Cookie Bars. They disappeared in a hurry at out last meeting. Request for recipe: One of the big hits in the quilt show green room was the chicken soup simmering away on Saturday. Whoever brought it, please the recipe to Lynn (artlynn@3rivers.net). Many people will bow down to you.

Falls Quilt Guild May 2017 Volume 32, Issue 05 Page 7 More from April Show and Tell Deana Wilson made this 12 pointed stars from diamonds she cut demonstrating the Go cutter at he Heritage festival in Pam Peterson shows her square in a square wall hanging. There s lots of wonderful fabric in it. Susan Hedahl finished her 2015/2016 mystery quilt in time to enter it in this year s show. Great work! LaDeen Williams is anxious for camping season to begin. (Our meetings are the second Tuesday of each month so you can mark your calendar now. They start at 7 pm unless otherwise noted. Also a meeting of the FQG Board and Committee Chairs starts at 6 pm preceding the regular meeting. Members are welcome to attend any time. If you have a specific issue though, please let the president know so she can put it on the agenda.)
