1 GOLDEN RAND GUILD NEWSLETTER. February 2018 Issue 122 NEWSLETTER NO MORE MEETINGS AT THE FRIENDSHIP GATHERINGS However, we will have a fun-filled Happy Hour where we will have an inspirational speaker, an exciting demonstration, Show & Tell and, in between all of this, the odd essential announcement. From time to time we will add fun competitions to the mix. Any administrative matters or routine announcements will be made by or WhatsApp. In November we changed the time of the old meeting to 10am. There was mixed response, though most people were positive. We will hold Happy Hour from 10:00 to 11:00 with very strict adherence to these times for a few more meetings to see if the majority of our members enjoy the new format. Inside this issue Meet the Committee... 2 Home Group News... 4 GRG Vendor Listing....5,6 Interchange: Threads Connect. 7 Home Groups. 9,10 GRG Teachers. 12,13 Chairlady s Musings Agenda..16 We have agreed to one other change. The Friendship Gatherings will start at 09:00 sharp and the doors will close at 13:00. We have made the decision to shorten the Gathering because previously our loyal vendors have stayed on for a handful of stragglers wishing to browse. Please take note of the above changes. Special points of interest Happy Hour replaces the Friendship Gathering meetings New Home Group and Vendor listings 1

Rest in Peace, dear friend - Sue Laver It is with much sadness that we dedicate this issue to a dear friend and long-time GRG Committee Member, Sue Laver. Sue passed away suddenly on 8 December She was a GRG member for many years and served on the Committee as the registrar for members. We will miss her quirky sense of humour, her kind heart and her hard work over the years. 3 PLEASE SUPPORT Trash to Treasure Table Sheila van Dyk will continue to run the popular Trash to Treasure table and we ask that you support this worthy cause by bringing anything that you no longer need and buy what someone else no longer has use for. A special request that magazines not be donated as we find that these do not sell and take up a great deal of space. Please donate generously the income goes to Festival Fund Raising and Sheila gets 10% of the takings for her projects. Sheila and her helpers are still busy making 11,000 quilts for the underprivileged. Do support this worthy cause. Scrappy Angels Retreat 13 th 15 th April 2018 Mazenod Centre, Lambton. Cost R for full weekend board and lodging. Cost R for Saturday only 3 meals Deposit: R payable, by the end January. Balance: payable by end February. 4 HOME GROUP NEWS Scrappy Angels The ladies of Scrappy Angels have once again outdone themselves during We worked on a few charities and collected food which we made into food parcels. These food parcels were supposed to go to the Hope Project, but they were not collected as arranged, so we donated them to Shirley Groves who heads up a charity, In the Spirit of Riding. The parcels went to various homes in Lochvaal and Sasolburg. We collected stationery, toiletries and toys which went to the 35 th Annual Toy Run. This is coordinated by Graeme Cartwright. We supplied twenty-eight stationery packs and twenty-eight toiletries packs. Our big charity was to make items for premature babies at Sebokeng Neonatal Unit also run by Shirley. We made prem. booties, hats, baby-grows and jerseys. Ten single bed quilts were donated for the Kangaroo mother care unit as well as fifteen tarries. Twenty quilts were made for the top of the incubators. In total four hundred items were collected for the hospital. We would like to thank all the groups and generous people who made items for Sebokeng Neo-natal wards. However, due to riots in the Sebokeng area, the items could not be delivered. Sebokeng Neonatal s loss was Leratong Neonatal, Kangaroo mother care and children s ward s gain. Scrappy Angels will be working again on stationery packs, toiletries packs, premature knitted items and fidget cushions in support of their various charities during Barbara Robb 4

Applications are now open for those wishing to work with us, starting on 1 February Go to the website to fill out the online forms and we will be in touch with you. South African teachers may submit their proposals for workshops and lectures. This is where the best of South African teachers get the opportunity to share their expertise nationally. And there is something new: we plan to have short one-hour workshops and demonstrations suitable for beginners or inexperienced quilters. Perhaps this is the kind of teaching you would like to do? See our website for more details. If you are unsure, perhaps check out for their Quick and easy workshops and see the hundreds of ideas that their teachers have come up with. Applications for Retailers are also now open. Fill out the online form with your requirements and we will try to accommodate you. The good news is we have plenty of space! Sponsors are the lifelines of our quilt festivals. They may also contact us via the website and choose from the many options on the sponsorship form. Money, products and skills, we need it all, companies and individuals alike, and no donation is too small. While we are on the subject of money FUNDRAISING! Made with love by Barbara Robb The six teddies in the photo were made for a lady whose father had passed away. Each teddy was made from her late father s shirts. Photos of each grandchild with the grandfather were added to the body of the teddy. These were then given to the grandchildren at Christmas time. It was quite emotional making the Teddies but such a joy as well. What a lovely way to have something to cherish and a memory to last a life time. 8

15 Chairlady s Musings The Christmas and New Year period is always a time for family gatherings, time for happy reflection and sometimes also a time to ponder on any loss. I was lucky enough to have my middle daughter and her family visit from New Zealand after three years away, but also said farewell to my son and his family when they left for Auckland. The day after Bridget went back home, we had our Committee Planning Indaba and whilst I started out feeling very flat, within a very short space of time the incredible team had me buoyed up with their enthusiasm, their innovative yet practical proposals, and they inspired me to tackle 2018 with a renewed sense of purpose. GRG is in very good hands with these eleven dedicated ladies and I hope that you will enjoy everything that we have in store for you - and especially our Inspiration theme. We trust that you will all get to meet each member of the new committee at our Friendship Gathering we are certainly hoping to meet and greet all of you. Please take note of the added extra we are offering. Telene Jeffrey is presenting a Lecture/Demo called Quilting the Latte after the Friendship Gathering - see the advert for info. Our Friendship Gatherings will start at 09h00 sharp, with Happy Hour taking place between 10h00 and 11h00. The shops will be trading, and quilts exhibited from 09h00 until 13h00. We hope to see you all in Blairgowrie for the Friendship Gathering. Pat Official Website: Official Facebook page: Official Festival Website: 15
