GIANT COOKIE CONTEST: Bring your giant cookie to the Home Arts Department on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 by 6 PM to be judged at 6:30 PM. Cookies will be judged on size, taste, and texture and displayed during the Fair. Ribbons only. BERRY JAM CONTEST: Premium Awards 1 st $40, 2 nd $30, 3 rd $20 for each category. Low acid fruits, such as figs, should be made more acid by adding lemon juice as directed in the University Agricultural Extension Service leaflet "Home Canning of Fruits." Tomatoes and fruits (not including their juices) must be processed in a boiling water bath. Exhibits must be CLEAN, SEALED and ACCURATELY LABELED as to the contents on the side of the jar. Label must include type of processing used. The name of the exhibitor MUST be on the bottom of the jar. DEFINITIONS: PICCALILLI: is prepared from green tomatoes, onions, red peppers, salt, sugar, vinegar and spices. CORN RELISH: is mainly corn, seasoned with red and green peppers, onions, celery, diced melon, spices, salt and vinegar with a mustard or tomato base. CHUTNEY: Watermelon, cantaloupe, raisins, currants, orange peel, walnuts, sugar, salt, spices and white vinegar. CHOW: A minimum of three (3) vegetables in a mustard sauce. PRESERVES: Whole fruit of uniform pieces of the fruit cooked slowly so that the pieces retain their shape and do not become pulp. JAMS: A preserve that is cooked until it is pulp. BUTTERS: Strained. MARMALADES: Use fruits that have jellying properties containing slices. Small pieces of peel of the fruits in the jelly. Jelly should be clear. CONSERVE: Similar to marmalade, but with nuts or raisins. Mixed fruit is used. 6 SECTION 36: QUILTS SPECIAL AWARDS DONATED BY PAJARO VALLEY QUILTERS ASSOCIATION: BEST IN SHOW ADULT (#220) QUILT - $100 BEST IN SHOW YOUTH (#230) QUILT - $50 NOTES: Quilt Definition: A quilt consists of three layers: a fabric top, a fabric back, and a soft material between. These layers are held together with either patterned hand stitches or patterned machine stitching that pierce all three layers. All work must be done by exhibitor ONLY; excluding machine quilting. ALL QUILTS MUST HAVE A PERMANENT OR TEMPORARY 4 SLEEVE ON BACK (TOP) FOR HANGING PURPOSES. QUILTS MUST HAVE SIZE LISTED ON ENTRY FORM. The Department Chairman reserves the right not to judge or display quilts that may not be in good condition, clean, free from pet hair, dirt, smoke or other odors. To expedite the receiving process, quilts must be received folded so that the bottom right hand corner is on top for pinning entry cards. Please have the size of your quilt pinned on the bottom right hand corner. All entries must have been completed since the 2013 Santa Cruz County Fair. Classes: 1.
