Duvet w/button Enclosure 2009 Minutesmatter 1 of 6 Vol. 1 No. 1

Duvet w/button Enclosure This example is for a queen bed, duvet has 14" finished drop, a button enclosure on back of duvet, and piping along bottom edge of duvet. When top of mattress to floor is higher than 27", a drop longer than 14" is needed. A duvet can have Velcro or button enclosure. A button enclosure can be at the head or foot of bed. When fabricating a duvet with a long drop, a flange can be added to allow down comforter to fit properly. Always use contrast fabric for back of duvet. When duvet does not have a flange, it is not reversible. (see step 6) When using a down comforter (usually shipped compressed), make sure comforter is stored where it can breathe in a moisture free environment until time to insert into duvet. Tip: Use one size larger down comforter than the bed size; i.e. queen size bed use king down comforter, king bed use California King down comforter. 1. Yardage: Size Solid Fabric Yds 27" Repeat Yds Contrast Yds Piping Yds Twin Full/Queen King Face fabric cuts: Before cutting, steam press entire piece to prevent shrinkage. Width: FW + 2 x drop length + 1" + 3" = Formula: FW of bed, plus two times the drop length, plus 1" (seams), plus 3" (loft of down comforter) Example: 60" + 28" + 1" + 3" = 92" Length: FL + 1 x drop length + ½" + 16" + 3" Length (when using Velcro enclosure): FL + 1 x drop length + ½" - 16" + 1" Formula: FL of bed, plus one times the drop length, plus ½" (seams), plus 16" (button enclosure) plus 3" (loft). Formula for Velcro enclosure: Important: Deduct button enclosure then add 1" for seam at top (see Step 9) Example: 80" + 14" + ½" + 16" + 3" = 113½" Piping around duvet: 6 2" Note: Cut straight across fabric. Cording can also be cut on bias. Approx. 8 yds 10/32" cording is needed. Piping inserted in seams of duvet (Optional): 4 1½" Note: Approx. 6½ yds of 4/32" cording is needed. 3. Lining cuts: Lining fabric should be same as face fabric, a contrast fabric or inexpensive chintz type fabric. Regular lining can be used when using darts, however, lining can show at corner drops. (see step 6) Width: Same as face fabric cuts. Length: Face fabric - 1" = Formula: Cut length of face fabric, minus 1" 2009 Minutesmatter 2 of 6 Vol. 1 No. 1

4. Fabrication: 1. Cut all fabrics according to cut information above. 2. Split one width of fabric & lining (lengthwise). 3. Sew 4/32" piping on both sides of whole panel. (see dia. 1) Sew half widths on each side of whole width of face fabric. When using three widths of fabric for a king size, do not split panels. (The small piping is optional.) 4. Sew half widths of lining on each side of whole lining width. 5. Serge all sides of both face fabric & lining. Serging give the inside edges of duvet a finished appearance. 6. Round corners of face fabric & lining BOTTOM ONLY. (see dia. 2) 5. Piping: 1. Cover piping. (see How To s Piping/Covering) 2. At this time, do not sew close to cord. 3. Sew piping to face fabric along sides & bottom. Do not sew piping across top. 4. Stop sewing piping 16" from top of duvet. (see dia. 3) Leave 2" extra of covered piping on each side of duvet to be used during finishing. 5. Tip: Before cutting off piping, make sure piping is laying very flat on duvet; no puckering. 6. Finish piping off at 16" stopping point: a. Cut cord & piping cover 14" from top of duvet. b. Pull cord out of piping cover & mark 2"; CUT CORD ONLY. c. Straighten out piping > pull excess cover into seam > stitch to finish off piping. Repeat for both sides of duvet. d. Piping will finish 16" down from top of duvet. 6. Adding darts (when contrast fabric is not used): Use darts in lining WHEN duvet is not reversible or if a flange is not being used. Darts prevent lining from hanging below face fabric of duvet. 1. Sew darts in lining before attaching to face fabric. 2. Start darts 24" from top > sew entire length of lining. 3. Dart is approx. ¼" from seam at widest point of dart. 4. Taper off about 2" before ending dart at bottom of duvet Minutesmatter 3 of 6 Vol. 1 No. 1

Adding darts (when contrast fabric is not used) (continued): 5. Tips: Darts are not necessary when a duvet is just interlined & a down comforter is not going to be used. Darts are not necessary when there is a flange. 6. CAUTION: Lining always shows at corner drops of duvet; regular white/off-white lining is not a recommended choice unless the face fabric is off-white. 7. Fabrication: Hemming Button Enclosure: 1. Fold a doubled 7½" hem at top of lining > hem with blindstitch machine. (The same as a regular drapery lining hem.) (see dia. 4) 2. Fold over 8" at top of face fabric > hem with blindstitch machine. (This will only be a single fold thickness.) Buttonholes: 1. Mark buttonholes on front side of face fabric with single fold. (see dia. 5) 2. Start buttonholes 1" down from folded edge. a. Without Flange: First & last buttonhole should be placed 5" in from each side. b. With 2" Flange: First & last buttonhole should be placed 7" in from each side. c. With 3" Flange: First & last buttonhole should be placed 8" in from each side. 3. After marking ends, space button holes equally about 8" apart. (see dia. 5) 4. Buttonhole space: FW - 10 = 8 = 5. Example: FW is 92" without flange, minus 10" (5" set in per side) = 82" divided by 8 = 10 spaces. Therefore, 11 buttons are needed. 6. Sew buttonholes. Tabling & Sewing: 1. Fold face fabric again 8" & press. (There will be an 8" double folded hem on back of face fabric.) 2. Cording should stop where fold begins on face fabric. 3. Before sewing lining on front of duvet, flip 8" fold to front of face fabric. (see dia. 6) 2009 Minutesmatter 4 of 6 Vol. 1 No. 1

Fabrication (continued): 4. With right sides of face fabric & lining together > pin/glue baste sides & bottom. 5. Ties/snap strips can be added at this time. Do not add ties/snap strips when the duvet has a flange. 6. Stitch along sides & bottom SEW CLOSE to cord at this time. 7. To finish seam allowance of piping, either allow for a ¾" seam & do not serge edges until this point. Or, trim piping seam allowance to ¼" > use fringe adhesive to seal two serged seams together > press to seal. (Fringe Adhesive available from Rowley Co see Sources/Sewing Supplies) 8. Turn duvet > flip fold over to backside of duvet. Fold of face fabric will be on top of lining. (see dia. 7) 9. Mark button placement with a pencil dot though each buttonhole opening. (Use covered buttons, decorative buttons, pearl buttons, etc.) Adding Ties To Secure Comforter: 1. Cut four pieces of ¼" ribbon 10" long (ties) & four pieces of ¼" ribbon 2" long (loops). 2. Sew ribbon or tack roman shade rings to all four corners of down comforter. 3. Sew ribbon ties in seam allowance at all four corners of duvet. 4. Fold tie in half > tack in center of ribbon so that there are two 5" ties. 5. When sewing flange on duvet, ribbon will need to be inserted & pinned into corners to be stitched as flange is sewn. 6. Option: Duvet snap strips can be used in place of ties. (Available from Rowley see Sources/Sewing Supplies) Larger Duvet: More ties snap strips can be added for larger duvets. Extra ties snap strips can be added at bottom center & center of sides. Flange Option: 2" - 4" flange can be sewn at this time. Reminders: 1. Outer buttons on button enclosure should be placed approx. 7" - 8" in from edge of duvet. 2. Spacing of all other buttons would be approx. 8". 3. Adding a flange can take up empty space when down comforter is smaller than desired finished size. 4. Darts are not necessary when adding a flange. 8. Duvet Button Enclosure on Front (optional): 1. Button enclosure can be placed on front of duvet. 2. Enclosure should be set approx. 18" - 20" from top of duvet. This depends on the number of shams & pillows & how they are placed on the bed. 3. Cord all four sides of duvet. (see dia. 8) 4. Band on enclosure can be a contrast fabric. 5. Band width can vary in size from 4" - 6" double banded Minutesmatter 5 of 6 Vol. 1 No. 1

9. Velcro Enclosure (optional): 1. Follow the above steps leaving off steps pertaining to 16" fold for button enclosure. Also deduct enclosure amount from cut lengths & add 1" for seam allowance. 2. Sew all around duvet leaving a 53" area open at top of middle panel. 3. Use 1" Velcro; cut a 50" piece of male & female Velcro. 4. Press seam allowance down 1" on lining of duvet > sew hard or male Velcro on seam allowance & through lining of duvet. (Serged edge of lining is hidden under Velcro. Seam allowance is folded to inside of duvet.) 5. Cut a 4" strip of face fabric 53" long > fold in half lengthwise > sew ends > turn & press > serge top of strip. 6. Sew soft or female Velcro on top of folded strip. With a 1" seam, sew strip with soft Velcro to face fabric opening. This should now be a natural looking enclosure. 7. Sew across ends of Velcro making a large X to reinforce. The X connects lining & face fabric together. 10. Inserting Comforter: 1. Turn duvet inside out. 2. Lay comforter on top of face fabric. 3. Match ribbon ties snap strips with loops or rings > connect together. 4. Fold duvet in half (top to bottom). 5. Flip cuff over duvet over comforter. 6. While holding top corners of face fabric & comforter, turn duvet right side out Minutesmatter 6 of 6 Vol. 1 No. 1
