## PATTERN PIECES 4069 McCALL'S CRAFTS CHAIR COVER AND PILLOW A 1 Front 2 Side CHAIR COVER C,D 7 Guide PAGE 1 of 6 3 Arm Front 4 Skirt Front 5 Back 6 Pillow CUTTING LAYOUTS Cut other pieces first, allowing enough fabric to cut this piece. Open fabric. For Cut 1 pieces, cut piece once on single layer of fabric with piece face up on right side of fabric. For Cut 2 pieces, cut piece twice on single layer of fabric, once with piece face up and once with piece face down on right side of fabric. SEWING INFORMATION CHAIR COVER AND PILLOW A 1 /2" (1.3cm) SEAM ALLOWANCES ARE INCLUDED, (unless otherwise indicated) use pieces: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 ILLUSTRATION SHADING KEY 45" (115cm) fabric with nap or without nap 3 Right Side Wrong Side Interfacing Lining Underlining Press as you sew. Press seams flat, then press open, unless otherwise instructed. Clip seam allowances, where necessary, so they lay flat. Trim enclosed seams into layers 54" thru 60" (137cm thru 150cm) fabric with nap or without nap 3 5 GLOSSARY Sewing terms appearing in BOLD TYPE in Sewing Instructions are explained below FINISH-Stitch 1/4 (6mm) from raw edge and finish with one of the following: (1) Pink OR (2) Overcast OR (3) Turn in along stitching and stitch close to fold OR (4) Overlock. OPTIONAL FOR HEMS: Apply Seam Binding. FLEECE A use piece: 6 REINFORCE-Stitch along seamline where indicated in sewing instructions, using small machine stitches. NARROW HEM - Turn in hem allowance, turning under raw edge. Press. Stitch close to pressed edge. 45" (115cm) fleece 6 GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS Estimating Fabric Needs CHAIR COVER B, C OR D View D - Piece 7 is a guide METHOD I Take measurements in inches or centimeters. Write these measurements down. Measure to find the width and length needed, see individual instructions. To find the number of widths of fabric necessary for your item, divide the width needed by the width of the fabric you plan to use. Round any fractions to the next whole number. Multiply the number of widths needed by the length to determine the amount of fabric needed, PRINTED IN U.S.A. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

PAGE 2 of 6 Width needed divided by width of fabric = number of widths of fabric needed Number of widths of fabrics needed x length needed = amount of fabric To find the true bias, fold an edge marked B to A, carefully matching cut edges. Crease along fold, being careful not to stretch fabric. Cut along drawn lines until entire tube is one continuous bias strip. 1/2yd(0.5m) of 44,45 (115cm) wide fabric will yield a 2 1/4 (5.7cm) wide continuous bias strip approximately 9yds(8.3m) long. 1/2yd(0.5m) of 58,60 (150cm) wide fabric will yield a 2 1/4 (5.7cm) wide continuous bias strip approximately 12yds(11.4m) long. To join ends, remove 1 (2.5cm) of stitching from one end of fabric covering. Cut cording same amount. To convert inches to yards, divide by 36. To convert centimeters to meters, divide by 100. Fold under 1/2 (1.3cm) on fabric covering and place cording ends so they just meet. METHOD II Draw each piece on graph paper, using a scale of 2 (5cm) per square or any convenient scale. Cut out scaled models. Mark width of fabric you plan to use on another piece of graph paper. Place scaled models onto this paper, having straight edges along lengthwise and crosswise grains of the fabric, piecing length of paper as necessary to accommodate all the pieces. (If fabric has a nap or a one way design, take this into consideration when laying out pieces.) For pieces cut on the bias, mark a diagonal line and place straight edge along this line. Convert squares back to inches (centimeters). Open out fabric and cut away triangular section along crease mark. Refold fabric covering, covering cording and baste in place. SEWING DIRECTIONS To convert inches to yards, divide by 36. To convert centimeters to meters, divide by 100. Piecing CHAIR COVER AND PILLOW A Note: Always use a full length of fabric for the center. Be sure to add seam allowances. If using two lengths of fabric, cut one in half lengthwise. Stitch split fabric sections to each side of full fabric width. With right sides together, pin triangular section to opposite end, matching edges marked B. Stitch, taking up a 1/4 (6mm) seam allowance. Encase cord inside strip, having raw edges even. Using a zipper foot, stitch next to cord, stretching bias gently. When stitching a seam with piping, using a zipper foot. REINFORCE side edges of FRONT 1 through small circle and square, as shown. Clip to small circle and square. Piping To make a continuous bias strip for piping, straighten both cut edges of fabric by pulling crosswise thread and cutting along pulled thread. Mark these edges A. Cut away selvage edges. Mark these edges B. Starting at one end, draw lines parallel to bias edge on wrong side of fabric, spacing 2 (5cm) apart. Applying Piping Note: Allow 1 (1.5cm) extra if joining ends. On outside, pin piping to seam allowance with tubular portion just outside seam allowance, clipping piping seam allowance at corners and at regular intervals along curves. REINFORCE front edge of each SIDE 2 section through small circles, as shown. Clip to small circles. With right sides together, fold fabric, matching drawn lines; then offset the lines so that one strip extends on each side. Stitch, taking up a 1/4 (6mm) seam allowance. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

PAGE 3 of 6 Pin side to side edges of front, matching symbols. Stitch between large circles. Stitch BACK 5 to side edges of front and side sections, breaking stitching at large circle. Stitch upper edges of back and front together. Stitch pillow sections together, leaving an opening on one side for turning. Join widths for throw cover. FINISH all edges of cover. Remove cushions if covering them separately. Place throw on furniture. Turn right side out; press. Stuff with fiberfill to desired firmness. Sew opening. Pin ARM FRONT 3 to front edge of each side section, matching symbols. Stitch between large circle and square, pivoting at small circles. Fold upper corners on front and back, matching seams. Stitch between small circles. Smooth fabric over back and arms. Tuck fabric in around sides and back of seat cushions. Fold in excess fabric on back forming square corners. CHAIR COVER B Pleat in fullness at top and bottom of wing, as shown. Tack in place. Designer Tip: Throws may be used over cushions or you may cover cushions separately and use over throws. Materials Turn up hem, turning in 1/2 (1.3cm) on raw edge; press. Stitch close to inner pressed edge. Fabric Thread Stitch SKIRT FRONT 4 to lower edge of front and arm front and side edge of side, breaking stitching at symbols. 1 1/2 (3.8cm) No-Roll Elastic 3/8 (1cm) Cord for Cushion Pin FLEECE 6 to wrong side of each PILLOW 6 section, having edges even; baste. Stitch along one side for opening. Zipper for Cushion - equal to length of back edge or lower edge plus 4 (10cm) Muslin or old sheets for making cushion pattern Upholstery Pins Measuring For Throw THROW COVERS W. x 110 L.(254cm x 310cm) SKIRT LENGTH - Cut length of skirt is 15 (38cm)(11 finished). At each front corner, hand gather along lower edge. Adjust fullness evenly and secure thread ends. SKIRT WIDTH - For width of piece needed for skirt measure around the four sides of the chairs. Add 3 (7.5cm). Secure at bottom with upholstery pins. Figure amount of fabric needed, following General Instructions. Cutting And Sewing For Throw Cut each throw 100 (254cm) long. Cut each skirt 15 (38cm) long. CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

4069- PAGE 4 of 6 Join widths for skirt. Remove skirt. Stitch ends. CUSHION - back to front plus 4 (10cm) ; side to side plus 4 (10cm). BOXING STRIP - thickness of cushion. a. Side with zipper add 6 (15cm) to the thickness. b. Remaining sides add 4 (10cm) to the thickness. c. Length of strip with zipper, measure across back and add 5 (13cm). d. Length of remainder of strip, measure the sides and across the front. (Extra length is allowed for adjustment) Cutting And Sewing for Cushion Lay pattern pieces on fabric, being sure that the marked grainlines on top and bottom pieces and straight edges of boxing strip are running along the grain on the fabric. Cut 2 1/4 (5.7cm) wide bias strips for piping and make piping following Piping Instructions. Stitch opening, stretching elastic while stitching. MAKING PATTERN FOR CUSHION With chalk, mark a line down center of cushion, parallel to straight edge. This is the grainline. Turn in 3/4 (2cm) on lower edge of skirt; press. Turn in again 3/4 (2cm); press. Stitch close to inner pressed edge. Place skirt on chair, lapping skirt over throw. Use upholstery pins to hold skirt in place. CUSHION - Cut muslin to measurements found above. Shape and fit muslin for top and bottom of cushion. Mark seamlines and grainlines. Cut seam allowances to 1 (2.5cm). Cut boxing strip for zipper in half lengthwise. To form casing, turn in 2 1/2 (6.5cm) on upper edge of skirt, turning in 1/4 (6mm) on raw edge; press. Stitch close to inner pressed edge, leaving an opening. Stitch 1/2 (1.3cm) from upper pressed edge of skirt. BOXING STRIP - Cut muslin to measurements found above. Baste a 1 (2.5cm) tuck down the lengthwise center of boxing strip for zipper. Pin boxing strips together at one end. Pin strip around cushion. (Extra length is for adjustment when stitching in place) Mark seamlines at upper and lower edges of strip. Cut seam allowances to 1 (2.5cm). Pin cut edges together. Baste 1 (2.5cm) from edge. Press seam allowances open. On INSIDE, center closed zipper, face down over basted seam. Baste through all thicknesses. Measuring For Cushion Cut a piece of elastic, the same length as the sides and back of chair. Insert elastic through casing; pin ends together. Place skirt on chair. Adjust elastic to fit snugly. Take all measurements at the longest and widest points. On OUTSIDE, stitch 1/4 (6m) from seam. Remove basting. Baste across ends of zipper. Measure each seam which requires piping and add 1 (2.5cm) for joining. Add all measurements together for total piping cord needed. Add fabric to cut enough 2 1/4 (5.7cm) wide bias strips to cover cord. Use METHOD II from General Instructions to estimate amount of fabric needed for cushion. Allow for top, bottom, bias strips and boxing strips. CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

PAGE 5 of 6 Stitch remaining ends of boxing strip together, adjusting length of the strip without zipper if necessary. Trim seam allowances to 1/2 (1.3cm). View D: SKIRT WIDTH FOR RECLINER - For width of piece needed for skirt, measure around the sides and back of recliner. Multiply by 2. Place cover on upright recliner as shown. Smooth fabric over back and arms. Stitch one end of remaining boxing strip to one end of zipper strip, taking up a 1/2 (1.3cm) seam allowance. SKIRT WIDTH FOR FOOTSTOOL - For the width of piece needed, open out footstool and measure around footstool. Multiply by 2. All Views: Use METHOD I from General Instructions to estimate amount of fabric needed. Cutting and Sewing Cut each width for cover 102 (259cm) long. Cut each width for skirt 15 (38cm) long. Mark center of back edge on top and bottom sections. Apply piping to edges of top and bottom sections, following Apply Piping instructions. Stitch top to boxing strip, taking up a 1 (2.5cm) seam allowance. After checking fit, cut seam allowances to 1/2 (1.3cm). Open zipper. Stitch bottom section to boxing strip in same manner. Place cover on cushion. Join widths for cover. With right sides together, fold cover in half lengthwise, having raw edges even. Pin GUIDE 7 to one corner of cover, having straight edge cutting lines of guide along raw edges of corner. Cut along solid cutting lines. Round off remaining corners using a dinner plate. Tuck fabric into spaces around seat, having bottom edges of fabric even around recliner and arranging over handle. Fold in excess fabric on back forming square corners. CHAIR COVER C,D Materials Pin boxing strip to top, matching center of zipper strip to center back edge and clipping strip at corners.
