Gathered Balloon 2009 Minutesmatter 1 of 6 Vol. 7 No. 5
Gathered Balloon Balloons have a soft informal look & can be functional or stationary. They are appropriate for all size windows. This example is for a 42" window, outside mount. Add 24" - 36" to desired finished drop length for stationary balloon shade. Add up to 24" extra length for functional shades. Balloons can be fabricated with a shallow pouf or a deep pouf. Instructions below are written for deeper poufs. Deeper poufs use approx. 27" of fabric per pouf (poufs finish at 10" - 12" wide) with a fullness ratio of 2.75 to Shallow poufs use approx. 18" of fabric per pouf (poufs finish at 8" - 10" wide) with a fullness ratio of 2.25 to Fullness on balloons & widths of poufs vary according to preference. Ruffles, beaded trim, bullion or tassel fringe can be added to bottom edge of balloon. Trim or ruffles can be sewn into bottom seam by eliminating bottom hem & pillowcasing bottom seam. Trim can also be attached with Fringe Adhesive. (Fringe Adhesive available from Rowley Company see Sources/Sewing supplies) 1. Up to 40 FW yardage: Up to 45" FL " to 57" FL " to 72" FL " to 84" FL " to 96" FL " to 108" FL Up to 41 to 62 FW yardage: Up to 45" FL " to 57" FL " to 72" FL " to 84" FL " to 96" FL " to 108" FL Up to 63 to 84 FW yardage: Up to 45" FL " to 57" FL " to 72" FL " to 84" FL " to 96" FL " to 108" FL Up to 85 to 108 FW yardage: Up to 45" FL " to 57" FL " to 72" FL " to 84" FL " to 96" FL " to 108" FL Minutesmatter 2 of 6 Vol. 7 No. 5
2. Face fabric cuts: 1. When fabricating balloons make sure ring rows are placed at seams. 2. When using wood poles or rods allow extra length for rod pocket & heading. Width: FW + returns = x 2.25 = Formula: FW (add returns to FW) x 2.25; (fullness is adjusted according to number of widths desired). Example: 49" x 2.25 = "; use two widths; returns & side hems are included. Length (functional): FL + 18" + 3" + 2" = Formula: FL, plus 18" (three extra bottom pleats, or preference), plus 3" (bottom hem), plus 2" (mounting allowance). 3. Lining Interlining cuts: It is best to cut interlining & let it rest 24 hours before fabricating. (see Quick Tips Interlining) Width: Same as face fabric. Length: Face fabric cut length - 3" = Formula: Same as face fabric, minus 3" (bottom hem). 4. Fabrication: 1. Sew or serge face fabric cuts together. (see dia. 1) 2. Repeat for lining & interlining, matching seams with face fabric. 3. Lay face fabric face side down > place interlining on top of face fabric > place lining right side up on top of interlining. a. Interlining & lining should be placed 3" up from bottom of face fabric. 4. Square off bottom of shade with square or edge of table. 5. Tip: When adding trim to bottom of shade, place first ring 4" - 5" up from bottom of face fabric; this allows all of trim to be exposed. 6. Fold > press doubled 1½" side hems. 7. Trim both sides of interlining & lining at press mark. a. For thicker looking side hems, fold interlining into side hem & only trim off 1½" on each side of instead of 3". 8. Pin doubled 1½" side hems. 9. Fold > press > pin a doubled 1½" bottom hem. 10. Draw a pencil line across width along top of shade for FL & serge. a. Include the extra allowance for bottom pleats & mounting allowance. 11. Pin or glue baste top of shade to prevent fabric & lining from shifting Minutesmatter 3 of 6 Vol. 7 No. 5
5. Marking rings: 1. Use Ring Marking Template from Minutes Matter to mark shades fast & accurately. 2. Mark ring placement with a tiny pencil dot. a. Disappearing pens could disappear before rings are sewn on shade. 3. Vertical spacing: a. First ring is 3" from finished bottom edge, unless adding trim see step 4.5. (see dia. 2) b. Remaining rings are marked 6" apart. (see dia. 2) c. Last ring should be 5" - 15" from top of shade. 4. Horizontal spacing: a. For this instruction there are five ring rows which are spaced approx. 25" apart. (see dia. 2) b. Outer ring rows are placed next to side hems. c. When Ring Marking Template from Minutes Matter is not used, mark one outer vertical row. After marking, fold shade in half lengthwise > mark opposite side. d. Use a steel measure to line up pencil dots on each side of shade > then mark interior ring rows. 5. After marking, pin shade above each mark to prevent layers from shifting. 6. Hem & top of shade: 1. Blindstitch side & bottom hems. 2. Serge top of shade at marked line. 3. Use a ruffler attachment a ruffling machine zigzag over (.9mm) roman shade cord & gather along serged line to fit mounting board. 7. Sewing rings: 1. Use brass rings on shade; brass rings have a smaller bite. (brass rings available from Rowley Company see Sources/Sewing supplies) 2. Sew rings at each pencil dot. a. Attach rings with tacking machine or machine with a zigzag stitch. 3. Check rings on front of shade to make sure there are no puckers from tacking. 8. Mounting: 1. Use a 1 x 4 board for a projecting mount. (see How To s Board covers) 2. When using balloon as a top treatment over draperies, mount on a 1 x 6 board. 3. For an inside mount, board should be cut ¼" smaller than FW of window opening. 4. Mount shade along top of board with push pins. (see How To s Board covers) 5. To ensure even gathering, divide board into four equal spaces; make allowance for returns. 6. Mark with pencil along mounting line. a. Marks on mounting board will vary according to number of poufs in balloon. 7. Line up ring rows with marks on mounting board; make small adjustments if necessary. a. Check pattern placement along top of board. 8. Staple to board Minutesmatter 4 of 6 Vol. 7 No. 5
Mounting (continued): 9. Piping or decorative cord can be added to top edge of board before stapling board cover. 10. Pull flap over > staple board cover. (see How To s Board covers) 11. Mark screw eyes with an awl at ring rows toward front of board. (see dia. 3) 12. Place screw eyes into board at marks. (screw eye driver tool available from Rowley Company see Quick Tips/Workroom tools) 13. Functional shades require a cord cleat, cord lock or RollEase Clutch System can be used. (see Step 10:5-11) (RollEase System available from RollEase see Sources/Hardware & Motorization) 9. Optional weight bar: 1. Weight bar is very visible on balloon shades; therefore only use when absolutely necessary. Weight bars do help a shade lift properly. 2. Cut a weight rod 2" smaller than FW of board. a. Option 1: A ⅜" steel weight rod (BR6) can be purchased from Rowley Company. b. Option 2: Purchase ¼" or ⅜" threaded rod from a home improvement store. c. Option 3: Purchase a plain ¼" or ⅜" aluminum rod from a metal supplier. 3. Cut fabric tubing from Rowley Company (#BR40) 2" longer than rod. 4. Insert weight rod into fabric tubing. 5. Fold excess tube to back > glue or hand tack. 6. Open side hems just enough to insert covered rod in between second & third row of rings 12" up from bottom hem. 7. Tack covered rod to side hems. (see dia. 4) a. The covered rod is more concealed when it is placed between the second & third row of rings. 8. Note: When a 1 x 4 or 1 x 6 board is used with a return, DO NOT sew weight bar into side hems. a. Weight bar should be attached at ring row. b. Attach fabric tubing as you are sewing rings on the second row, then insert weight rod into fabric tube. c. Fold excess tube to back & glue or hand tack Minutesmatter 5 of 6 Vol. 7 No. 5
10. Stringing: 1. Determine if shade draws to right or left. 2. When using RollEase, follow their directions for stringing. 3. String with roman shade cord. (1.4 mm cord available from Rowley Company see Sources/Sewing supplies) 4. Start at bottom > tie a knot. a. Knot will tighten up as string is pulled. (see dia. 5) 5. Run cord up through one row of rings, through screw eyes or pulleys, cord lock & down about ⅔ of shade. 6. Repeat for additional ring rows. (see dia. 6) 7. Raise & lower to ensure that shade is working properly. 8. Lower shade completely > even out strings > tie a knot with all strings at top next to cord lock or screw eye. 9. Use Cord Condensers & cord pulls to finish off cords. (condensers CT 20 or CT 21 & cord pulls available from Rowley Company see Sources/Sewing supplies) 10. Tip: For stationary shades, raise shade & tie off cords at screw eyes. 11. In accordance with child safety standards, use Cord Condensers & cord pulls to finish off cords. (Condensers CT 20 or CT 21 & cord pulls are available from Rowley Company see Sources/Sewing supplies.) 11. Installation tips: 1. To help folds retain memory, keep functional shades raised to desired height for several weeks. (Crease-A-Way can be used to help train shades, available from Rowley Company) (Polyester fabric will not train.) 2. Functional shades may require dressing as they are raised & lowered. 3. DO NOT INSTALL THIS SHADE IN A CHILD S ROOM. Back cords are considered hazardous to small children. Inform client of lift cords behind shade. 4. Visit for the latest safety information on fabric shades. 5. Visit Rowley Company for the latest safety products before fabricating fabric shades Minutesmatter 6 of 6 Vol. 7 No. 5
