2 Printing your pattern: Your pattern may be larger than your printer can print on one sheet. You can print a large format document by splitting the page across multiple sheets of paper (called tiling ). The tiling option calculates how many sheets of paper are needed. 1. Choose File > Print 2. Print pages 1-5 (the Instructions) as standard on A4 paper 3. Follow the instructions below to Print pages 6-11 as Poster 4. From the Page sizing and handling menu, set the Scale to 100% 5. Check the Choose paper by PDF page size 6. Click Poster 7. Check the Tile only Large Pages menu under poster option Note: If the tile options are not in the menu, make sure that the following options are not selected in the Advanced Print dialog box: Print As Image or, for Acrobat only, Separations or In-RIP Separations. Also check your version of Adobe Reader as Reader 9 does not support tiling. Tile Scale Scales the pages by the amount you specify. Overlap Determines the amount each tile overlaps adjacent tiles. Cut Marks Adds guide marks to each page to help you trim the overlap. Labels Adds the filename and page number on each "tile". 4. Click OK or Print You will Need: 45cm of 92cm (36 ) wide main colour felt (colour 1) - Marl Grey V1 20cm of 92cm (36 ) wide contrast colour felt (colour 2) - Marl Heather V12 55cm of 92cm (36 ) wide felt for lining - Marl Heather V12 75cm of 72cm (28 ) wide, 5mm thick foam such as Style-Vil 10cm x 8cm (4 x 3 ) piece of fusible web such as Bondaweb 3m of 25mm (1 ) wide soft webbing for strap 1.25m of thick cord for drawstring that will fit through the eyelets 8 x 14mm eyelets with washers (if you use a different size eyelet you will need to adjust the size of the eyelet holes on the pattern) 15cm (6 ) zip 2 x D-rings to take a 25mm (1 ) strap 2 x swivel clips to take a 25mm (1 ) strap Thread to match (Measurements in brackets are in inches) Piece of fusible web such as Fuse-a-web 2 For more patterns visit Jomil 2017

3 Equipment: Sewing machine with regular and zipper foot Size 14 machine needle Hand sewing needle Non-permanent fabric marker Pins Scissors Steam Iron Sticky tape to join pattern pieces Pattern Pieces: 1 BAG INNER 1b This piece must be joined to 1 before cutting out felt 2 BAG OUTER TOP AND BOTTOM STRIPES 2b This piece must be joined to 2 before cutting out felt 3 BAG OUTER MIDDLE STRIPES 3b This piece must be joined to 3 before cutting out felt 4 BAG BASE 5 BAG INSIDE POCKET Seam allowances are 12mm (½ ) throughout unless otherwise stated INSTRUCTIONS 1. Cut out all paper pattern pieces and permanently join together the pieces 1 and 1b by overlapping the shaded area on piece 1 so that the corresponding red arrows touch at the points. Do the same for pieces 2/2b and then for pieces 3/3b. 2. Iron all felt to reduce shrinkage later, do not leave the iron on the same spot for too long or the felt will burn. 3. In contrast colour felt, cut two rectangles each 10cm x 8cm (4 x 3 ) cut out a piece of fusible web the same size as the rectangles, iron the web onto one of the felt rectangles, when cool peel off the paper backing and iron the two rectangles together with the web sandwiched between. Cut out two strap retainers (pattern piece 6) from the fused felt. Now cut two 25mm x 25mm (1 x 1 ) squares from the remaining fusible web and iron onto one end of each of the two strap retainers, peel off paper backing when cool. Thread a strap retainer through one of the D-rings, fold in half so that the web is sandwiched in 3 For more patterns visit Jomil 2017

4 the middle and the straight edge of the D-ring is trapped in the fold, iron to fuse ends together. Repeat for other strap retainer. 4. Cut out pieces 1 5 as indicated. 5. Using the strips cut from pattern piece 3, sew together along the long edges so you end up with a striped piece, having the main colour in the middle with a contrast stripe at either side. Now take the strips cut from pattern piece 2 and sew on at either side so that there is now 5 stripes of alternating colours. Press the seams open. Topstitch approx. 4.5mm ( 3 / 16 th ) at either side of all seams. Use paper pattern piece 1 as a template and trim stripey felt to same size as lining. 6. From stripey felt, lining and foam, using pattern piece 1 as a guide mark and cut out eyelet holes where indicated. If you are using 14mm eyelets then the holes need to be the same size as marked on the pattern but if you are using a different size then refer to the instructions that came with your eyelets for the correct size, if in doubt cut smaller as you can always trim later but you can t correct it if you made the holes too big and the eyelets fall through. Don t put the eyelets in yet! 7. On the wrong side of one pocket piece use the fabric marker to mark out the rectangle as indicated on pattern piece 5. Using pattern piece 1 as a guide for placement, place the marked pocket piece on top of the lining piece. Sew all around the marked rectangle, through both layers. Slash through the middle of the sewn rectangle making a V shaped cut from each end of slash to corners as indicated on pattern piece 5. Push the pocket piece through the slash, manipulate the rectangular hole with your fingers to make it neat and press with an iron. With the zip closed, whipstitch by hand the ends of the zip together above the zip puller. Center the zip into the rectangular hole, with the zip puller up against one hole side (the zip will be too long at the other end, trim if you prefer but if you cut off the end stop you will need to sew a new one), the right side of the zip should be showing on the right side of the lining piece (the pocket will be on the wrong side), and pin in place. Using the zipper foot sew all around the rectangular hole close to the edge to secure the zip in place. Change back to the regular machine foot. Take the remaining pocket piece and place it on top of the other one, sew all around the outside edge of the pocket pieces only, avoiding catching the lining piece. 8. Place the bag lining on a flat surface so that the pocket is on the underside, place the stripey outer piece on top of that with right side facing down, then the foam goes on top. Pin all three pieces together, make sure that the eyelet holes all line up and pin around them to keep in place, then sew all along the top edge only. Trim the seam allowance of the foam to reduce bulk. 9. Remove pins and open out the lining so that you have a roughly square shaped piece one half lining and the other half stripey. On the right side of the stripey part pin in place the strap retainers where indicated on pattern piece 1, the D-rings should be towards the top edge of the bag (at the moment that is the seam between the stripey side and the lining side). Use the zipper foot to enable you to sew near to the D-rings and sew a square close to the edges of the strap retainers to attach them to the bag, you will be sewing through a lot of layers so sew slowly and carefully, then sew a X shape on the inside of the square, corner to corner for strength. 10. Now bring together the sides of the bag having right sides together, stripes to stripes and lining to lining forming a long tube. 5 lining and striped parts. Press seam open and trim seam allowance on foam. 11. Fold the lining to the inside, your bag should now have the right side of the stripes facing outwards and the lining on the inside with only the zip of the pocket visible. Pin around the eyelet holes to hold in place, top stitch approx. 4.5mm ( 3 / 16 th ) from top edge of bag. Fit the eyelets in the holes through all 3 layers of bag, following manufacturer s directions. Pull the lining back out so you once again have a long tube, turn inside out so that the side seams are on the outside of tube (you won t be able to open out fully because of eyelets). 12. Pin together the circular foam base and the circular main colour felt base, mark and sew along the lines indicated on pattern piece 4, do the same with the lining base piece but this time there will be no foam. 13. Mark with pins eight equal sections on the lower edge of the bag (stripe side), to do this without measuring follow these directions: Flatten the tube having the side seam running down one edge, mark the seam with a pin, then mark the folded edge at the other side with another pin, unfold, bring together the two pins and flatten tube again so that you have two new folded edges, mark with two more pins, unfold, you should have now divided the bottom edge into four equal sections. Now bring together two pins which are next to each other and again flatten and mark the new folds with more pins, unfold and bring together the last two pins you just put in, flatten and mark with pins the last two sections. 14. With felt sides facing, match the marking pins on the lower edge of the bag to the stitched lines on the bag base, ease to fit and pin all around, sew together. Repeat steps 13 and 14 with the lining and lining base, but this time leave quarter of the circle unsewn. 15. Turn the bag the right way out through the gap that you left in the lining. Hand sew the gap closed and then push the lining inside the bag. 16. For the strap cut the webbing into two long pieces, place one on top of the other and sew together along each long side. Decide how long you want your strap to be and add 20cm (8 ) and cut to length. Thread one end of the webbing through one of the swivel clips, fold over 10cm (4 ) from end, trapping the swivel clip in the crease, make another fold 5cm (2 ) from the end so that the raw end is hidden away in the middle, sew in place by sewing a rectangle shape so that the Swivel clip is held in place at one end of the rectangle and the second fold is secured at the other end, for strength sew a cross shape from corner to corner of the rectangle. Repeat with the other end of the strap, checking that your folded ends are folded on the same side at each end of the strap. 17. Thread the drawstring through the eyelet holes so that both ends come out at the front of the bag (seam is at the back), Pull the drawstring to close to bag and tie to fasten, tie a knot in each end of the drawstring at your desired length so that the drawstring will not come out, before trimming drawstring ends make sure that there is enough length to enable you to open the bag. 5 For more patterns visit Jomil 2017
