In general, ½ yd. (.46 m) of 45" (115 cm) wide fabric is sufficient for pillows 16" (40.5 cm) and smaller. For pillows 18" (.46 m) or larger, double the side of the basic square. Here are more specific requirements: Continued on page 2
Pillow form size Basic square Yardage required 12" (30.5 cm) 13½" ½ yd. (.5 m) 14" (35.5 cm) 15½" ½ yd. (.5 m) 16" (40.5 cm) 17½" ½ yd. (.5 m) 18" (46 cm) 19½" 1⅛ yd. (1 m) 20" (51 cm) 21½" 1¼ yd. (1.1 m) Prewash and dry fabric following care instructions. Stabilize fabric with spray starch or a starch alternative and press with iron. Note: Pressing is a crucial component of any sewing project. Press as you sew. Your project will look better, and sewing will be easier. 2. Create a. Cut a square of paper the size of the pillow form plus 1½" (3.8 cm). [For example, with a 14 (35.5 cm) pillow, cut the square 15½" (39.3 cm).] Fold the square in half, meeting opposite sides; cut along the fold, making two half pieces. Size of pillow form Add 1½" Fold the square in half Use one half as the for the pillow top. Draw a fold line with arrows along one long edge, and indicate Fold. Using a scissors, place nip markings at both ends of the fold. Use the second half of the paper as the closure side of the pillow. Draw an extension line 4½" (11.5 cm) in from one long edge. At the top and bottom of the, place nip markings 3" (7.5 cm) and 4½" (11.5 cm) from the edge. Indicate on the Cut 2. Nip Nips 3" 4½" Fold Cut 2 Nip Nips 2
3. Cut out the. Fold fabric in half, wrong sides together, meeting selvages. Place pillow top on fabric, aligning fold line with fabric fold. Pin along fold. Secure remaining edges, pinning diagonally into corners and adding a few pins parallel to the edges. Fold Right side Selvages Place pillow closure on fabric, aligning edge so it is parallel with the selvages. Pin to fabric approximately ½" (1.3 cm) from the edge of the pillow top piece. Fold Cut 2 Cut out pieces. 4. Mark fabric by cutting ¼" (.6 cm) nips at the fold of the pillow top and at marked positions on the pillow closure side, or make marks with an erasable fabric marking pen or pencil. Nip or mark 3" Nips or marks 4½" 3
5. Interface the hem edge of the closure sections. Interfacing is an additional layer placed on the wrong side of the fabric which adds stability and support. Cut two rectangles of fusible or sew-in interfacing 3" (7.6 cm) wide and the length of the pieces. Meet interfacing rectangles to wrong side of each closure piece as shown. Interfacing wrong side Fuse or stitch the interfacing in place following the manufacturer s instructions. 6. Fold under a hem on each closure piece. If the fabric is prone to raveling, zigzag stitch the interfaced hem edge, or fold under the edge ¼" (.6 cm) and stitch. Fold and press each closure piece along the first nip marking, meeting wrong sides together, creating a hem. wrong side Zigzag hem edge, fold under 7. Overlap the two closure pieces, matching the second nips, one on top of the other, forming a square. Pin overlap. Overlap, match nips 8. Add a closure in one of these ways: Using Velcro: Cut a 6" 10" ( cm) length of Velcro, cutting both the hook and loop sides creating a set. Center the Velcro set (with hook and loop strips together) under the overlap. One long edge of the Velcro should be approximately ⅛" (.3 cm) from the fold. Use an erasable fabric marking pen or pencil to mark the Velcro position on both the overlap and the underlay. Mark Velcro position on overlap Mark Velcro position on underlay 4
7/8" Separate the two closure pieces. Position the hook side of the Velcro at the marked position on the overlap and the loop section at the marked position on the underlay. Straight stitch Velcro in place. Overlap Attach Velcro Underlay Using ties: Cut 10" 12" ( cm) lengths of trim such as cording, leather strips, fabric tubes, etc. (You ll need two lengths for each tie.) Place a knot 1 (2.5 cm) from each trim end. Stitch one tie to the center of overlap hem, sewing next to knot. Stitch a second tie to the underlay, positioning it 3" 4" (7.5 cm 10 cm) from the overlap tie. overlap 3 4" underlay Using buttons or snaps: Mark a line on the overlap hem midway between the fold and the second set of nips. Determine the number of buttonholes or snaps, spacing them approximately 3" (7.5 cm) apart. Note: feel free to vary the button spacing depending on the size of the buttons and the number of buttonholes. Here s a place you can let your creativity roam free to express your personality and style. Stitch buttonholes or attach snaps along the marked center line. Overlap Mark a center line Note: For an even easier way of marking and stitching the buttonholes, try Space-Tape. This see-through tape, printed with colored horizontal and vertical markings, includes buttonholes ranging from ½" 1" ( cm). Stick the adhesive-backed Space-Tape on the marked center line on the overlap hem. Stitch buttonholes as usual, sewing through the tape. Tear away excess tape, and you re finished. Any tape remaining under the stitched buttonholes acts as a stabilizer and prevents stretching. 1" 5/8" 3/4" 1/2" 7/8" 5/8" 1/2" 3/4" 5
Stitch buttons or attach snaps along the center line of the underlay. 9. Stitch the pillow together with four quick seams. Overlap closure sections, matching nips. Meet pillow top and closure side, right sides together. Pin sections together, with pin heads facing the cut edges. Note: Don t over-pin! Beginners often tend to use lots of pins. Remember, it takes time to insert and remove all those pins. A few strategically placed pins will do the job. Wrong side Note: Prior to step 9, embroider pillow front as desired. For our pillows, we selected three designs from Amazing Designs Santa Claus III and added lettering using Amazing Designs Letter It! Embroidery Software. Stitch upper and lower edges with ⅝" (1.5 cm) seam allowances. Lock stitches at the beginning and end of each seam. Remove pins as you come to them. Wrong side Press seam allowances flat; then fold seams toward the center of the pillow along the stitching lines and press again. This wraps the seam allowances and makes it easier to get sharp corners, as well as crisp edges on the pillow. Stitch the remaining two seams, sewing from fold to fold and creating a wrapped corner. Angle cut the corners. Note: It s not necessary to leave an opening because the pillow has a back closure, allowing for easy insertion of the pillow form. Wrap seams Angle cut corners Wrong side Turn pillow right side out. Use a Bamboo Pointer & Creaser to shape the corners. Press pillow; insert pillow form.
