Then fold in half again width wise. Now fold one more time lengthwise. Take a disappearing ink pen and mark a small dot on the tip of the folded corner. Use the dot as a guide when hooping the fabric. Decorative Box Liner This decorative box liner is an easy and inexpensive way to create fun storage for your sewing notions and organize your sewing area at the same time. Shoe boxes or any size cardboard box with the top flaps cut off will work for this project. For this project, you will need: A cardboard box Enough material to line the box Tear away stabilizer Invisible ink pen 3. Hoop the fabric and attach the hoop to the embroidery machine. Before you begin to embroider, place two pieces of tear away stabilizer under the hoop. 4. When you have finished embroidering all of the side pieces, tear away any excess stabilizer. 5. Now you are ready to sew the liner. Start by sewing the sidepieces together. Having right sides together stitch a seam stopping 1 2" from end. Repeat for all pieces. Once all the sidepieces have been sewn together press seams open., join to the bottom piece, stitch with right sides together at 1/2" seam. (See Fig. 1 on how to form corners.) Zigzag close to stitching line all the way around, trim away excess fabric. Fig You will be cutting the material into five pieces to make the liner. There will be four sidepieces of fabric, and one piece for the bottom. To determine the amount of fabric needed for the liner, measure each side of the box as well as the bottom of the box. Double the length of the material for each side piece, and add 1/2" for seam allowance to the length and width of all the cut pieces of fabric. 6. Fit the liner over the box to determine where to hem the liner. Remove the liner from the box, press the hem and sew. 1

3 Embroidery Machine Dust This embroidery machine dust cover is great for keeping your embroidery or sewing machine dust free in between embroidery & sewing projects. If you have a rotary cutter and cutting mat, they will come in handy for cutting your fabric for this project. There will be a total of seven pieces of fabric cut for this project: A front and back piece, two side pieces, a top piece, and two pieces for side pockets. The solid color fabric was used for the front, back, and sidepieces. The accent print fabric was used to make the top piece and the side pockets. For this project, you will need: Fabric approx. 1/2-3/4 yd. (Solid color & accent print) Straight edge ruler Invisible ink pen Tear away stabilizer Scissors or rotary cutter 1. Every embroidery machine is a different size, so you will have to measure your machine for the proper dimensions to make the dust cover. Add an extra inch of fabric to both the length and width of each cut piece for seam allowance, hem, and to give the dust cover a slightly loose fit. 2. When measuring for the front, back and sidepieces of fabric, start by measuring the front bottom width of the machine. Then take your ruler and make three mark points on the fabric. (See Fig. 1). Two end points, A&B, and a center mark point C. Fig.1 measure the height of the machine. Starting at the E D F center C mark point, measure up the fabric for the height and make a mark point D. (Don t forget to add your seam A C B allowance.) Now, measure the top front of the machine and divide that number in half. Using this measurement, start from mark point D and measure out to mark points E and F. 3. Line the edge of the ruler up on mark points B & F and draw a cutting line, or use a rotary cutter along the edge of the ruler to cut the fabric. Repeat this step for mark points E&F, A&E, and A&B. 4. Repeat Step 2 & 3 for the back piece, and the sidepieces. (Optional: Layer the front & back, cut both at the same time. Do the same for the sidepieces.) 5. To make the top piece, measure the length and width of the top of the sewing machine and add a 1/2" for seam allowance. 2

4 6. Adding a side pocket(s) that can be used to hold accessories, such as the foot control is optional. To determine the dimensions for the side pocket(s), place the foot control on a piece of fabric. Measure the height of the foot control at the top and bottom and add 1/2" to each measurement. Then, measure out this distance diagonally from each corner and make a mark point. (See Fig. 2) Fig. 2 Fabric Foot Control 7. Draw lines with a fabric pen connecting the corner mark points. Cut out the rectangle, or use a ruler and rotary cutter to cut the fabric between each mark point. 10. Attach the pockets to the sidepieces of the dust cover. Sew the bottom of the pocket in place first before sewing the sides of the pocket. (Note: Keep in mind where the hem will be on the sidepiece before deciding where to place the pocket.) 11. You have the option of sewing the fabric pieces of the dust cover together before you begin to embroider or you can embroider the designs on the front and back pieces before you assemble the dust cover. 12. To assemble the dust cover, with right sides together, stitch the front, back and sidepieces together using 1/2" seam allowance. Press seams open. Join to top piece. Form the corner. (See Fig. 4) Fig Sew a 1/4" inch hemline on all sides of the rectangle. Hem the longer sides first, then the top and bottom. 9. With the right side of the fabric facing down, fold over the sides of the pocket one inch and press with an iron. (See Fig. 3A) Then fold the edge of the fabric back towards the outside edge, leaving about 1/4" inch gap between the two outside edges. (See Fig. 3B). After the fabric has been hooped, place two pieces of tear away stabilizer under the hoop before you begin to embroider. 1/4" gap 3

5 Notions Sewing Caddy The sewing caddy is a convenient way to keep a variety of embroidery and sewing supplies handy while using your machine. When the project is complete, you will have six pockets for storage. Slip one end of the caddy under your embroidery machine to hold it in place while the other end hangs over the edge of your sewing cabinet or table. We used three embroidery designs for this project. 2. To determine where the three embroidery designs will be placed on your fabric, place the solid piece of cut fabric right side up. Find the center of the width of the fabric by either folding the material in half length wise, or by measuring in from the outer edge of the material 10 1/4". From the " mark, measure down from the top edge of the material 12 3/4" and mark with a dot of invisible ink. Then draw a 1" vertical and horizontal line through the middle of the dot. Keeping your ruler on the horizontal line you just drew, mark two more points on the horizontal 2 3/4" in from the edge on both sides of the material. (See Fig. 1) Once again place a 1" horizontal and vertical line through each of these points. (Hint: Place an arrow pointing upwards on the top of each of the vertical lines. The direction of the arrows will help you to remember which way is the top of the embroidery designs.) Fig /4" 12 3 /4" For this project, you will need: 2/3 yard solid color fabric 2/3 yard accent print fabric Fusible batting (20 1/2" x 30") Invisible ink pen Iron Scissors and/or rotary cutter 30" 2 3 /4" 2 3 /4" 1. Measure and cut a 20 1/2" x 30" piece of fabric from both the solid and print fabrics. 4

6 3. You are now ready to embroider the three designs you have chosen. Use the 1" horizontal and vertical lines that were drawn as a guide to help center the fabric in the hoop. (Hint: A good way to make sure that your fabric has been hooped straight is to place the hooped fabric on the embroidery machine. Move the needle directly over the point where the horizontal and vertical lines intersect. Now move the needle back and forth and side to side. If your fabric is hooped properly, the needle will trace directly above the lines that were drawn.) Place two layers of tear away stabilizer under your hoop before you begin to embroider. 4. When you have finished embroidering the three designs, place the fusible batting on the back of the embroidered material and use a hot iron (no steam) to fuse the batting to the fabric. Fig. 2A 11" Fig. 2B 5. Now, take both pieces of fabric, place right sides together and sew all edges together except for the top edge of the solid fabric. Turn your fabric right side out. Run the hot iron over the print fabric to fuse it to the batting. 6. Hem the unfinished edge folding it in towards the print fabric. 7. Lay the fabric print side up with the just hemmed edge closet to you. (See Fig. 2A) Turn the hemmed edge up creating a fold 11" from the hemmed edge. (See Fig. 2B). Sew the two 11" side edges closed. 8. Fold the fabric up one more time, approximately 5" or until the three designs Fig. 2C 5" are in full view, making up the bottom row of pockets. (See Fig. 2C) 9. Sew up the side edges of the pockets. To create six separate pockets, sew two straight lines from top to bottom five inches in from the edge of the pockets, between the bottom fold and the top of the pockets. 5
