1 Fall 2017 Volume 45, Issue 1 1 Quilters Unlimited Quarterly President s Message Happy Fall and welcome to new and returning QU members. Most of our chapters slow down over the summer and gear up in September with new programs and events. I d like to encourage you to attend not only your chapter s events but try out another chapter. Take the opportunity to meet and socialize with new people, and enjoy their programs, speakers and events. Chapter events are posted on the website, sent to Chapter Presidents and also appear in Quilters Digest. We ve got a busy year planned and QU will continue to modernize and get ourselves on a sound financial and legal footing. Over the summer we have signed on with an attorney and accountant to better manage our 501C3 status. QU has not kept up with all the legal and financial paperwork and rules over the last 40 years and we need to adjust some of our practices in how we handle finances, audits and fund raising for both QU and the chapters. Over the years the rules and forms have changed and we need professional help that is consistent and doesn t change from year to year. QU is in the process of submitting paperwork to allow QU (and chapters) to avoid Virginia sales tax. This process takes several months to set up but hopefully will be in place by this year s quilt show (it will save us several thousand dollars). We ll be sharing this information with your chapter Presidents and board members so stay tuned. The QU fall event is October 19 at the NOVA campus in Annandale. Join us to hear David Taylor speak about his pictorial applique quilts. Doors open at 6:30pm. And the magic words are: Door prizes Have a good year everyone! 2 Fall 2017 Volume 45, Issue 1 2 QUILT SHOW UPDATE The Quilt Show Committee is off to a good start with planning for the 2018 quilt show. Our guest speaker for the annual meeting will be Jinny Beyer. In addition to the evening lecture at the Annual Meeting, Jinny will also be teaching two classes with the topics to be announced at a later date. If you have other ideas for classes or demos please let me know and we will look into it. This year s quilt show theme and challenge is called Just Piece It! It s inspired by my love of jigsaw puzzles. When I am making a quilt, I imagine all the pieces I ve cut out have to go together, like a jigsaw puzzle. I believe that many quilters are also avid puzzle makers so everyone should relate easily to this topic. For the Just Piece It! challenge, just about anything goes: strip piecing, English paper piecing, foundation piecing, hand piecing, etc.. Any completed quilt where the top has been pieced together can be included in this challenge. So use your imagination and Just Piece It!. All quilts hanging in the 2018 QU show must be completed by the end of February 2018, in time to be photographed. They also need to have a label and a sleeve for hanging. Happy quilting! Donna 2018 Show Chair Fall Event The QU fall event is October 19 at the NOVA campus at the Ernst Center in Annandale. Join us to hear David Taylor speak about his pictorial applique quilts. Doors open at 6:30pm. And the magic words are: Door prizes DAVID TAYLOR was born in Peterborough, New Hampshire, and currently resides in Henniker, New Hampshire. He has been the recipient of the Fairfield Master Award for Contemporary Quilting from the International Quilt Association (2006, 2014), the Brother Wall Machine Workmanship Award from the American Quilters Society (2008), and a two-time Best of Show winner at the IQA's Spring Festival in Chicago (2007, 2008), among others. His art quilts hang in numerous private collections worldwide. You can find instructions to make an acceptable sleeve at uploads/2016/10/quilt_sleeve.pdf and instructions for a label at cms/assets/uploads/2016/10/quilt_label_1.pdf. If you have any questions or suggestions please feel free to contact me at qushowchair@quiltersunlimited.org. I look forward to seeing your work in June at the 2018 QU show. Thanks to everyone for your participation at one of the museum's fundraisers! QUILTERS UNLIMITED EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING August 30, 2017 PRESENT: Mary Ansoff, Joyce Bounds, Donna Hosek, Rosemary Ryan, Trudi Sommerfield PRESIDENT: Joyce reviewed the progress made on last year's goals and the plans to continue to work on putting QU on a more business-like basis. It is for this reason that the services of the firm of McClanahan Powers (attorneys) have been engaged to advise us on legal, financial/accounting and insurance matters. They have already and will continue to answer questions regarding our 501 (c) status. They have indicated that the Board need not be bonded as our insurance covers that, but they did advise new insurance for the Board. The attorney will come to a Board meeting and would like to have the questions in advance. That and all dealings with the attorney need to go through Joyce. VICE PRESIDENT: Rosemary will be working on getting speakers for the Fall Event and Annual Meeting for two years out. She plans to attend a meeting of each chapter in the first two months of the quilting year to talk about programs and explore cooperative programming where it would work. The doors for this Fall Event will open at 6:30. SECRETARY: Trudi will continue to send each month's programs for inclusion in the Quilters Digest. TREASURER: Mary reported that the audit of last year's books has been successfully completed. She presented the proposed QU and Quilt Show budgets for Some revisions were made. Seven Chapter Treasurers attended the Treasurers' Meeting. Another meeting will be held for those who could not attend in August. We will increase our insurance to one million dollars without incurring an additional charge and will look at insurance for quilts at the show. REMINDERS TO CHAPTER PRESIDENTS: Please be sure your Chapter is represented at all Board meetings even if you cannot attend personally. The signed, revised Chapter Bylaws should be brought to the October Board Meeting if they have not already been submitted. NOMINATIONS: The current President, Secretary, and Nominating Chair are in their second term. Therefore, candidates for these positions need to be presented at the next Annual Meeting. QUILT SHOW: The contract with the Dulles Expo Center has been signed, and the budget for Hale is in the works. We discussed ways to improve the sound quality for the Annual Meeting. Discussed possible ways to increase Sunday attendance and other items such as chairs, ads, etc. We will downsize the shed and sell poles and get rid of black drapes. Respectfully submitted: Trudi Sommerfield September 8, 2017 Proposed Budget Proposed Quilt Show Budget

6 Fall 2017 Volume 45, Issue 1 6 Membership Update for The QU membership year kicked off on July 1, 2017 with the changes in the categories for membership. Each chapter strives to reach out to renew all our current members prior to October 1 to ensure they are included in the QU Membership Directory and start each chapter with strong participation. As you see from the numbers in the table below, most chapters are on target to maintain a membership total similar to the previous year. For this new year, QU has a goal to increase our membership through the Outreach Program that initiated last year and is ramping up for more action and communication to further the message about QU and all it has to offer to our Northern Virginia quilting community with the hopes of increasing our overall membership numbers with new members. All chapters are part of the Outreach program and everyone s support will help to reach the goals of continuing to grow the overall membership.
