1 Where Samplers Rule Just 15 minutes from the Airport at the SE CORNER OF DOBSON & GUADALUPE 1837 W. Guadalupe Rd, Suite 109 Mesa, AZ TELEPHONE (480) THE ATTIC 2014 August 14 Issue No T O L L - F R E E : ATTIC August Sampler of the Month Elise Schlüter from Gigi During August save 15% when you purchase a minimum of 2 of the kit parts: Chart $24 Lakeside Linen ~ Design size 259w x 236h: * 52/60c ~ 8.62w x 9h ~ $21 * 45c ~ 11.5 x 10.5 ~ $23 * 40c ~ 13 x 11.8 ~ $32 * 36c ~ 14.3 x 13 ~ $30 * 32c ~ 16.1 x ~ $36 Threads ~ * Gloriana Tudors $ (for 52/60c or 45c) * Overdyed Silk Threadpack $312 * Overdyed Cotton Threadpack $ (Above prices are before the discount.) Here s what Gigi says about this sampler in the chart: This attractive (presumably German) woolwork sampler has been stitched by Elise Schlüter in Since the original was ruthlessly glued to the cardboard plate, we were not able to inspect the back side of the sampler. Therefore it was charted from the front side, reproducing the sampler in its present aged state. Some colors seem to be faded and altered over the years. Our guess is that the sampler used to be much brighter, with vivid greens and purples. I m stitching our model on Lakeside s 52/60 Vintage linen with Gloriana s Tudor Silks ~ and the linen color, in three different lighting settings just wouldn t photograph as it really is, much more golden than it looks, more like the antique.

2 THE ATTIC! More Beautiful New Samplers from Gigi PAGE 2 Gigi says about this sampler: This beautiful Dutch sampler originally was stitched on very fine uneven-weave linen with silk threads. The original is almost square. Stitched on even-weaved linen, the sampler will obtain more rectangular shape. The name of the girl who stitched this sampler probably was Helena Willems. Helena is stitched at the end of the first alphabet line, but Willems - at the end of the line of numbers. Helena Willems 1817 $22, 276 x 342 MTVG $15, 225 x 190, that Gigi has called the 20-year sampler because it has two dates on it, perhaps the start date and the finish! Mary Hunter 1844 $15, 139 x 150 ~ love the reds! And it seems a perfect companion to Mary Hart

Of course, we must have accessories to complement the tray and then, of course, we must also have a box! As the instructress issues each painted workbox, she informs the young ladies that they will be perfecting their sewing and stitching skills with examples to fill the compartments within this special workbox. Inside the painted workbox is a stitched tray with a poem Merry wrote. The tray (with a very unique finishing) can be removed to hold threads, buttons, scissors, ruler etc when working on a project. Scrimshaw pieces shown in the photo, and below, not included in the kit, but can be ordered separately. Workshop Fee $310 Pre-stitching kits have been shipped From England, With Love - Saturday, Nov 8 The petite reticule style bag is inspired by an antique needlework bag found in the Cotswolds, in England, circa The bag measures approximately 4 tall and is stitched with luscious silk pearls in icy blues and mocha browns and accented with silver cut beads that closely resemble the cut steel beads so popular with the Victorians. The bag is lined with silk, drawn closed with silk taffeta ribbons. The silk purse strings are threaded through silver rings. The sentimental smalls are inspired by Victorian tokens and include a beaded bolster style cushion-scissors rest made with pearl cut beads, a heart-and-hand needle keep with the silver cut beads, and a cut paper pinkeep with a Victorian paper scrap embellishment. No pre-stitching for this project; Workshop Fee $210 Kit includes linen, silk pearls, silk floss, silk lining fabric, silk taffeta ribbons, beads, perforated paper, Victorian style scrap, Ultrasuede, wools, lace, needles and templates. Kit does not include glass head straight pins. Paper scraps will vary. A large variety of old and reproduction scraps will be presented for personal choice. Students will need to bring to class basic sewing supplies, plus perforated paper cutting tool and cutting mat, paper scissors, tape measure, straight pins, neutral basting thread, glue pen or stick, double stick tape, and twisted cording tool. For the best perforated paper cutting tool, Sherri recommends an X-Acto X3000 knife or X2000 knife with a NEW blade. Or, if paper cutting scissors are preferred, the Dr. Slick Microtip Arrow, straight scissors used by anglers for tying flies and available at large sporting goods stores like Bass Pro Shops or Cabela s, or online through Amazon and other retailers. If a less expensive, one-time-use tool is preferred, the Revlon cuticle scissors with precise curved blades will work.

22 THE ATTIC! PAGE 22 Coming from Ink Circles This Weekend! The Ship of Life, 345 x 421, is an amazing and inspired design from Tracy that she talked about in her newsletter to shops: I showed some photos on my blog and described some amazing antique weavings that inspired me to create an homage to the Tampan ship cloths of Sumatra. I was happy to see so many stitchers interested in this design. Rather than being a replica of a particular example, mine is a collection of my favorite bits and pieces and a few things I made up. Although fairly large, it's a very fun stitch because the individual motifs are so diverse. I LOVE red samplers, and this is certainly a stunning original design that I can t wait to see stitched! Also debuting at St. Charles from Tracy/Ink Circles: * Northwoods, a market exclusive to those shops attending the market for 30 days, when it will be available to others * Miracle Grow, #5 in the Bad Neighborhoods Series Bee s Knees is a new monochromatic piece Diversity in Beer ~ and the word is that a similar wine-themed version is in the works ;-)!!!

34 THE ATTIC! Luciana Update from Rosi! PAGE 34 Guess where in the world Luciana is? That s right..deutschland, with Rosi! Sorry we missed a month or so of updates, but with the excitement of World Cup (yes, the BEST team DID in fact win), trips to the cabin and picking up the debris from monsoon storms, Vickie and I didn t get together to go over progress. The good news is that I m moving right along, and pretty much on target to be finished before we ring in I decided to straighten out the top alphabet, and am really pleased with the progress, as you can see here. Will send an update from Germany! Remember To share your Progress with us! xoxoxo, Rosi

35 THE ATTIC! PAGE 35 Just In from The Essamplaire Left, the beautiful Soie de Paris silks from Au Ver A Soie that are kitted in the TC 1691 kit. Below, TC 1691 ($350 kit) is a fabulous sampler from the island of Terschelling off the north coast of the Netherlands. There are at least three other similar samplers. They all feature the wonderful bands with cut work, the five wise and foolish virgins, of which five carry an oil lamp that s lit and five don t, along with Christ with a halo above his head. There are other Dutch samplers with the five wise and foolish virgins but only the ones from the island have Christ wearing a halo. This pattern is based on the story from Matthew 25:1. Geometric motifs, sewing cushions, crowned and pierced hearts, and trees of life are other common elements on these samplers. All the bands are worked with colored silk thread. Difficult to tell who the original stitcher was, could have also been II and ID. The original sampler is in the Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe. Stitches used are satin, eyelets, Algerian eye, double running, cross stitch, cut work, dove s eyes, whipped stitch and pulled work. Kitted with Soie de Paris silk. Our 40c kit will produce a sampler measuring 26.5 x 24 and is suitable for intermediate to advanced stitchers. I apologize for the not-so-good photograph, which was obtained through the plastic bag that encloses the kit. Above, Abigail Pinniger 1780 ($153 kit) belongs to the earlier group of samplers made in Newport, Rhode Island. The large floral band is found on a number of other samplers from this time period. Abigail was the daughter of William Pinniger and Abigail Moon. She was born in Abigail married Joseph Thurston at Trinity Church in Newport on April 8, They had nine children. She died in (information from Girlhood Embroidery by Betty Ring). The sampler is worked almost entirely in marking cross with some cross over one thread, double running, and satin stitches. The original is at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design. It was unfinished and there was empty space below the large band, so it was adjusted to finish there. (Hmm, there s still hope for many of my unfinished samplers, that they will be completed one day!) On 40c linen the size is approximately 10 1/2 x 14 1/2.

36 THE ATTIC! PAGE 36 More from The Essamplaire The beautiful silks in this kit Left, This stunning 17th century English sampler, Hannah Thornbush, formerly a teaching piece, is now available to purchase as a kit ($299). The original sampler measures 33.25" x 7 3/8" worked over 3 threads of linen; on 45c it will measure 7" x 36" and on 40c it will be 7.8" x Ours is kitted with 40c linen cut to work the sampler over 2 linen threads, when its size will be approximately 5.2 x 27. It is worked with double running, satin, running, detached buttonhole, eyelet, longarmed cross, montenegrin, couching and marking cross. Below, close-up of the sampler s interesting area below the detached buttonhole center flower. Above, Elisabeth Ramsay-1815 ($34 chart) is from the Royal Scottish Museum. Generally Scottish samplers feature one of three different styles of buildings and the one featured here, with the wings on the sides, is one of the three. Elisabeth was ten years old when she stitched her sampler, and it is fairly safe to assume the M.J. Burton was her teacher. The initials worked in black are of deceased family members. Three different styles of alphabets were stitched, all having the little curlicues coming from them. The vases with tulips in them are a common element on Scottish samplers, as are the thistle and small rabbits on the lawn. The inscription reads, I have done this to let you see what care my parents took of me. Stitches used are cross, double running, satin, cross over one, rice, stem and some encroaching satin. On 40c x 19.

37 THE ATTIC! More from The Essamplaire PAGE 37 Lena Ter Meulen ($64 kit) is typical of small red samplers made in one of the orphanages in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Het Diaconie Weeshuis. Upon entering the orphanage the children were given a number ~ Lena's number was 142; she was 13 3/4 years old. She was the daughter of Lena Friesbach and Gerrit Ter Meulen (GTM). She was baptized on April 5, 1786 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. She entered the orphanage Jan, 29, 1800 at the age of 13. She left the orphanage on October 22, 1807 and received her inheritance. She took a position as a servant girl. At the age of 27, in 1813, she married Casper Speelmeijer. She was married a second time to Isaac Sluiter in They divorced in 1848 and she married a third time to Benjamin Verbruggen. The initials of SEB or SB appear on these samplers from 1773 to SEB or Sophia Elizabeth Baerselman was hired to be the linen mother for the large linen shop in the orphanage. Her duties included teaching her charges a set of skills that would allow them to be self-sufficient. Her initials always appear first, followed by numerous other sets of initials. These little samplers are all worked in marking stitch making them reversible, and most were done on a 70c linen. Four-sided stitch and algerian eye were also used on this sampler. Stitch count is 214 x 168, (on 40c linen, 10.7 x 8.4) Beautiful red silk in Lena s kit! Left, Soledad Villalobos ($21 chart) is a colorful Mexican sampler and an academy piece. Mexican samplers are usually worked in a reversible manner, i.e. the ends were finished on the front, and this sampler is no different. The cross stitch is worked so that all that is visible on the back are short vertical stitches. Long armed cross is used, as are double running, satin, cut work with wrapping, doves eyes, and Aztec stitch. The Aztec stitch can form different patterns depending on how the colors are worked and the direction they are stitched in. (255 x 239) Right, GVS 1772 ($29 chart) is a lovely sampler of Dutch origin, most likely from either North or South Holland. The farm building in the lower left corner is typical of old farm houses in the Netherlands. The people lived in the front section and the animals in the back. The storks on the roof were considered a good luck symbol. The city of Den Hague has it in their coat of arms. Numerous Dutch samplers have houses on them with the checkerboard path below it. The arbor at the bottom center on this sampler has a swan in it, but many samplers have a reclining stag in them. The central urn with roses is another motif seen on many Dutch samplers; however, the peacocks on this sampler are a bit more unusual. The sampler is stitched mainly using cross stitch, some tent, and some algerian eye. The initials and date are stitched using metallic thread.
