3 --President s Message Hello Everyone, I want to thank the Club Members for entrusting me with the future of Lake Havasu Gem and Mineral Society and Lake Havasu Mineral and Lapidary Group d/b/a Havasu Rocks for the year I m very excited about the next several months, we have a great new board with lots of new ideas and energy. Boy o boy, where did January go? So far the year has been jam packed with area events and in our own club. Our Winter Visitors are here and enjoying the purchases they have made at Havasu Rocks. The workshops are doing so well, we ve actually had to add more sessions. If you haven t already, pick up a copy of this year s Winter Visitors Guide, there is a fantastic (free) article about Havasu Rocks, which has brought in a lot of new business. There are a few things I would like to do this year. I would like to get some good lighting in the display cabinets to increase the beauty of all the consignment and club items for sale. Another vision is to start a kids program, especially for the summer months. The board needs someone to head up this task. It would be a director position with all the benefits of being on the board of directors. I am open to any and all ideas on how to enhance the Club and Havasu Rocks. Once again, I want to thank everyone and look forward to a year of working together to advance the club. Ladies Super Bowl Day Rock Painting Party Sunday, February 4 from 1:00-5:00 p.m. Free for LHGMS Members, ladies or men! Leslie Rosario is going to help those of us who have never painted a rock learn how to do it! If you re an experienced painter, all the better. We are also going to be helping the shop by each of us donating one of our painted rocks to our retail shop for the club to sell. You Bring: Your own rocks 2 (more if you want). The rocks should be round shaped river pebbles/stones with smooth surfaces and sort of flat. Be sure you wash them at home with detergent to remove any debris. Any beverage you d like to drink alcoholic or nonalcoholic and an appetizer to share. You may bring your own paint supplies if you want to. The Club will provide: Paint and supplies you need to complete your projects, one to take home and one for the shop. This will be a great afternoon to get better acquainted, make new friends and have some fun. Please confirm and let us know what appetizer you ll be brining. You may respond to this or you may call Havasu Rocks

8 Shop & Meeting location AMPLE PARKING IN BACK PARKING LOT!! Field Trip Monday, February 5 th! Chemehuevi Wash California Fun Facts of the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe. The Chemehuevi Reservation is a federally recognized tribe, who are the southernmost branch of Southern Paiute people, which was spread throughout southwestern Utah, southern Nevada, northwestern Arizona, and southeastern California. The Chemehuevi territory lay off the lower Colorado River north and west toward Death Valley and west to about the Providence Mountains. A less populated somewhat undefined strip stretched as far west as the foothills of the Sierra Nevada and north of the Mojave River. They neighbored the Koso and Serrano and were intimate with the Mohave, who after chasing the Halchidhoma and Kohuana eastward brought them to Cottonwood Island to live. In 1867 after a war with the Mohave, the Chemehuevi, moved westward and today, their main homelands are located in the Chemehuevi Valley area which is named after them. There are about 345 that live on the reservation but they have over 700 members on the books. Some Chemehuevi people live on the Southern Paiute reservations, among the Mission Indian bands, and in the multi-ethnic Colorado River Indian Reservation in Arizona. The Chemehuevi Reservation was established by an Executive Order in The reservation is governed by a ninemember elected tribal council, with a constitution and bylaws drawn up under the Indian Reorganization Ace of The council includes a chairperson, a vice-chairperson, and a secretary-treasurer. Tribal officers serve for three-year terms. In addition, various standing committees such as the resource development committee, the administration committee, and the human resource committee, report to the tribal council
