3 --President s Message This summer has been a busy one for me, personally, dealing with home construction, moving, selling a condo, and some health issues. Not to mention that this is my first summer in Arizona and I haven t acclimated to the DRY but HOT heat. Baseball and football are now overlapping, so there will be more TV while I sit in the air conditioning. Hopefully, you have had a good summer and are ready to get back into the routine. Also over the summer, I reviewed the proposed by-law changes from last summer as well as starting long-range planning for us to have our own lapidary shop. At this time we would need creative financing to have this project become a reality. Both tasks are now in front of the board for review. Last, our club was invited to participate in the city s Vision 20/20 development plan. We also have a new treasurer, Susan Scott, who stepped up as the Clarks are in California. Thank you, Sue! Our fall meetings will again focus on Education as outlined in our by-laws. We look forward to monthly speakers and an outing to the Chemehuevi reservation. If you have any suggestions, or would like to volunteer, please let us know. See you soon! Patrick Bell September Speaker on Pseudormorphism Club Member Patrick Bell will be our September speaker, discussing Mineral Pseudormorphism - the transformation of one mineral or material into another on the molecular level. Examples of this process are seen in: Pyrite to Limonite Azurite to Malachite Garnet & Magnetite to Hematite. Patrick will move on to variations of Pseudo morphs, such as the Epimorph and Perimorph, also known as the encrustation Pseudo morphs, an example would be the Quartz over Calcite Epimorph. Following the Pseudo morphs will be the Perimorph, in which the mineral remains the same chemically, such as calcite, aragonite, and limestone, but is changed on the molecular level as the atomic arrangement of the crystal and it's system. Lastly he'll discuss Paleontological Pseudo morphs (Fossils and petrified Wood). Patrick will also be presenting the "Mineral of the Month", our monthly education spotlight for the balance of

4 GENERAL MEETING MINUTES Lake Havasu Gem and Mineral Society General Meeting Minutes May 8, 2015 Mt. Olive Parish Center 2170 Havasupai Blvd. Lake Havasu City, AZ Club President Sue Stievo called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm. Flag Salute: Sergeant-at-Arms, Steve Greel led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance. As a quorum was not present, the business meeting was adjourned at 7:02 pm. In addition to those listed in the agenda, the members did share announcements. Because of Memorial Day, the breakfast will be on Monday, May 18. As Barry & Sheila Bandaruk had several recent trips, Barry had a slide presentation along with a rock display. These included slides on various towns, mines, and geodes/thunder eggs. Drawings Shirley donated 4 slabs and Jack donated 4 glass fusion pendants for door prizes. 50/50 ticket winners were Howard Wicks ($5) and Gayle Gilpin ($5). Submitted by Sue Stievo September Bonito Campground Bonito Campground is located 10 miles North of Flagstaff on Hwy 89 next to the National Park of Sunset Crater. The area is primarily Conifer Forest, 8000' in elevation, growing among the basalt rock, left by the crater that erupted in 1064 A.D. Within 40 miles of the park, are a variety of vistas and monuments as well as rockhounding locations that are virtually not searched. The Cinder Hills Overlook offer vistas stretching from the conifers out to the Painted Desert and the Little Colorado River. Wukoki, Wupatki, and Walnut Canyon are Native American Ruins that offer a history and walkabouts of these historic ruins. At other locations, such as Grey Mountain, Rock Hounders have a variety of stones to collect. Petrified Wood, a dark red jasper, and colorful banded river rock are some examples. The area around Joseph City, also offers a variety of rock to collect. For two wheel drivers, Dobell Ranch is a little further East near Holbrook, that offers Rainbow PW to collect for a nominal fee. To kick off the rockhounding season, we will head up a trip to Bonito Campground that has flush toilets and running water. Generators are allowed during the day. Tent camping is allowed. The Dates of September are tentative. I am hopeful we can have a great turnout for this trip. Campfires are permitted and we will have a potluck. The actual schedule of events is not in stone! Please call Barry Bandaruk if you need more information and you want to participate. The fee for the park is $11/ night with a senior pass. $22/ night without the pass. Sights are big enough to share if you are tent camping. Two cars are the limit. Suggestions and thoughts to make this a successful trip are always welcome! 4

On the other hand, discussions and promotion of advancing the hobbies of rocks, gems, minerals, fossils, hounding, lapidary, faceting, and jewelry making ARE WELCOME. Artisans are more than welcome to show your work, and please feel free to show us all and how you created your work but please group them. All other posts including sales, trading and ads will BE DELETED. If you see something you like, then contact that person privately. 7 How to Make a Rock or Crystal Shaking Screen You need: 2 pine 1"x4", each 4 ft long 2 pine 1"x2", each 4 ft long Piece of 1/4" grid hardware cloth, 27-3/4-in x 20-1/4-in. 3 feet of 1/2-in diameter nylon rope 22 No. eight 2-1/2-in flathead sheetrock screws Eight 3/4-in common nails Drill, 5/32-in bit for pre-drilling and 3/4-in spade bit Saw, screwdriver to fit wood screws, hammer and carpenter's square Fine-grit sandpaper and tack cloth Acrylic varnish or latex primer and paint, and brush or small roller *Nominal sizes; actual dimensions will be somewhat smaller. Cut list: 1x4's 2 pieces A, each 28-in long 2 pieces B, each 19-in long 1x2's 2 pieces AA, each 28-in long 2 pieces BB, each 19-in long To make: Note: Referring to diagram below, drill and assemble as shown. 1. Pre-drill holes in pieces A, AA and BB. Change to spade bit; drill each piece B. 2. Between side pieces A, screw each end piece B in place to make sieve top, using carpenter's square to ensure corners are perpendicular and pressing firmly on screwdriver to countersink screw heads slightly. Turn over so bottom edges are up, on work surface. Centre hardware cloth on bottom edges; nail in place at each corner and at midpoint of each A, then approx. 1 in (either way) from midpoint of each B, ensuring cloth is secure and taut. 3. With outside edges flush, screw 1 AA in place along 1 bottom edge, covering cut ends of hardware cloth; in same manner, screw on each BB, then remaining AA. Turn over. 4. Cut rope into 2 equal lengths. From outside, thread ends of 1 length through holes at 1 end of sieve; tie overhand knot in each rope end to secure. Repeat at other end. 5. Lightly sand wood, then wipe with tack cloth. Seal with varnish; let dry. 7
