UNITED WAY DAY OF CARING On Tuesday, June 13 th, Cosmo Arlington and Cosmo Market Mall celebrated United Way Day of Caring. Day of Caring is a wonderful opportunity for participants, staff, and volunteers to come together and make a difference in our community by working together and taking part in a variety of projects and activities. This year, Day of Caring was held at the Arlington satellite where we hosted our amazing volunteers from CIBC! The day began with a variety of paint projects. Canvases were painted with water balloons, water guns, bleeding tissue paper, and various of other materials. The artwork that was completed by each of the participants is truly amazing and is now on display throughout Cosmo Arlington! To follow, the group headed outside to play an exciting game of soccer before our delicious barbeque lunch. The volunteers from CIBC barbequed hot dogs, and served potato salad and watermelon to each of our participants, staff, and volunteers. Before the day came to a close, everyone participated in a scavenger hunt and then enjoyed ice cream sundaes! Thank you to our volunteers from CIBC, our participants, and staff for making our Day of Caring such a success! THANK YOU AFFINITY CREDIT UNION! On June 9 th we had a special guest at Cosmo, Victoria Morris (Affinity District Council Delegate for District 23). She joined us in the Life Enrichment area for lunch, took a little walk down the fashion show runway and then presented Cosmo with a donation from Affinity Credit Union. Your donation and continued support is greatly appreciated.
ARTISTS CORNER: MICHAEL NELSON Michael is part of the Life Enrichment division and has been working at Cosmo for over 35 years. Michael has the opportunity to express himself through art every week and he really enjoys it. He particularly likes to experiment with colour using both paint and markers. He takes his time on every piece of art that he creates and the results are always fantastic! Michael is very proud of his art and so are the rest of us at Cosmo. Thank you for sharing your creative talents with us, Michael! NEW STAFF Scott Shillington - C.E.S. Scott was away on holidays and unable to attend the show but his painting of a frog entitled Bam Bam, was received well by all who viewed it. Zena overcame her nervousness and proudly displayed her fish painting entitled, Fishbird. She was thrilled to have her painting viewed by friends and family. Ian Cushon and Kevin Czarnota came along to provide support. We were all treated to donuts and coffee and a lunch of wraps and cinnamon buns. Both Zena and Scott had their paintings prominently displayed at the Market Mall office before the show. Scott s frog is currently hanging at his Mom and Dad s house while Zena s painting is once again up at our Market Mall office. PARTICIPANT REVIEW: FITNESS GROUP WITH LEAH Leah started to come to Arlington to lead a fitness group after the big flood. Market Mall satellite sometimes joins us for fitness group, too. To get ready for fitness we move all the furniture in our lounge. Then we bring in hard chairs from the kitchen to use for exercising. Everyone has a favourite exercise that they really like. I know what mine is. It s called stir the pot. Candy really likes to do the kicks with a double punch. Silken likes to use the squishy balls to do hand exercises. Candice is always excited to do speed bag! One of the staff likes to do wash the windows. Leah asks us every time if we want to go wash her car for her. She hasn t washed it since before Christmas. She told us last week her dad finally washed her car. Thanks for coming to lead a fitness group with us, I really enjoy it! Melanie Moncrief-Cosmo Arlington
THANK YOU HENEY KLYPAK Heney has been a committed and respected member of the Cosmo Board for the past 20 years. It is difficult to capture the many contributions Heney has made to our organization over the years, although we know they all have impacted Cosmo in a positive way. At the past AGM, Heney officially became an Honorary Board member, a Cosmo friend forever. Heney Klypak grew up in a farming family near Simpson, Saskatchewan. Rural roots helped shape an honest, hardworking, practical, creative and passionate character. He practises architecture with plenty of enthusiasm, energy and a cooperative team spirit. Heney worked with well-respected Saskatchewan architects where he gained the experience to establish his own successful architectural practice in In the past 10 years, he has been particularly engaged with the First Nations Community developing strong relationships throughout the province of Saskatchewan. Recently, Heney received his Fellowship in the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, the only recipient from Saskatchewan-what an honor this is. Heney s involvement with Cosmo began in the early 1990 s as he was hired to create a renovation and 12-bed expansion to the Elmwood Residence Lodge. This was his first time working with Miners Construction with Howie Stensrud overseeing the project; a project that went very well! Heney shared that shortly after completion, Howie suggested he allow his name to stand for the Cosmo Board. How do you say no to Howie? That is how his 20 year journey began. Heney recalls his first board meeting and that he was one of the young ones!! He was in awe of the expertise and knowledge of the men and women on the Board. He too discovered very quickly how committed the Board was towards the participants, staff, and management. Heney wanted to share some of the memories he has made over the years... My first 10 years on the Board, the AGM and banquet was hosted by Howard and Rita in their back yard. Guess who was barbequing the steaks? The rise and fall of Cosmo Golf The multiple expansions of Paper Recycling His direct involvement on a number of projects that included: Getting natural light into the Pathways area Upgrades to the personal care area of the former Lifeskills area Creating a shading trellis to cover the former Seniors outdoor plaza Renovation to the north end of the Maunders McNeil building for the Community Enriched program The 2013 Blue Sky session with staff and management. This was a real success with a lot of enthusiasm from staff and management The 2014 planning session with the Board. A lot of the key points identified by staff and management were brought forward In fact, the 2014 meeting led to developing the first concept plan for a new elevator. This year we will see the elevator project becoming a reality. Most recently the completion of the construction drawings for the new elevator. Jill, a staff from my office, helped develop the flood restoration finishes plan for the building. Heney extends a special thank you to the board, management and staff for all the great years of working together. Heney attributes his success that was made possible with support of his wife, Gwen, their two children, Talena and Kaelen, and two grandchildren, Kadan and Aria. His family is blessed, as were we, his Cosmo family, to have his passion and dedication to our organization. We wish you nothing but continued success and may your days be filled with time spent with your family and of course your 69 Camaro! To end, Heney shares his favourite quote from Howie, No amount of money can ever replace good dumb luck!!

BBQ IN THE PARK On Tuesday, June 27th, Life Enrichment Area 1 enjoyed a barbecue at the Forestry Farm. A special thanks goes out to all the staff for organizing this event. All of the participants had an excellent time! The weather was perfect; not too hot and not cool either. The food was outstanding! Bhett and Richard are excellent chefs! The smokies were hot and the Coca Cola and Pepsi were cold; it was a perfect outing. Shawn Cherpin said, I had a great time. I ate two smokies and enjoyed the nice weather and visiting with all of my friends. I hope we can go again next summer! Kristan Bueckert said that, I especially enjoyed the fact that many participants and staff from CES were able to join us. These are the best smokies I have ever tasted! yelled Josh Ward during lunch. A very special thank you goes out to Maple Leaf for supplying the delicious smokies that everyone enjoyed so very much. The day was a huge success! COSMO BEATS THE HEAT On Friday, July 14, the Mean Green Ice Cream Machine parked near Cosmo Shred entrance and many of us took full advantage of the cool treats as temperatures soared well into the high 20s. Thanks to David Troesch for sending them our way! On July 5 th, participants and staff from Cosmo Industries participated in the Heart & Stroke Big Bike Event. Big Bike riders beat the summer heat and took part in the heart-pumping, cheer-thumping, crazy big, fun ride in which they biked 2 kilometers through the streets of Saskatoon. Cosmo Industries, supported by the Saskatoon Kinsmen Club, raised $ which will continue to aid in making big breakthroughs in heart and stroke research. A big thank you to everyone for their participation and support. ANNUAL HEART & STROKE BIG BIKE
THANK-YOU GALON Galon Insurance made a Facebook post in May with the promise of donating $1.00 to Cosmo for every like and share the post received. They set the maximum at $ and achieved that goal! Jeff Galon and his team volunteer at Cosmo every second Thursday with Life Enrichment. Thank you so much, again, Galon Insurance for your continued support! MOSQUITO & TICK SAFETY The Basics Spending time together outdoors is good for the whole family. Don t let bug bites ruin your fun. Most bug bites are harmless, but some mosquitoes and ticks spread viruses and bacteria that can make you sick. Some of these viruses and bacteria are very serious and may be deadly. dengue ( DEN-gee ) fever. The good news is that you can take steps to protect yourself and your family from mosquito and tick bites. Protect yourself from mosquitoes and ticks. When you spend time outside, take these steps to protect yourself: -sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks to cover your skin. Protect your pets, too. -approved tick collar or spot-on repellent on your pets. Dogs and cats need different tick control medicines, so make sure to get the right one.
