1 Fundraising is the start of your expedition experience. Whether you are raising money to fund the expedition itself, or raising money for a community project within your expedition, you can have lots of fun with it! Far Frontiers Expeditions, at Mandel House, Northleach GL54 3HB

2 INTRODUCTION Fundraising can be difficult and can seem daunting, there s no doubt about that! But given some time and effort you can achieve a lot! Fundraising shouldn t be a chore; you should do things you enjoy which enhance your own skills, confidence and hopefully make some money in the process! MAKE A PLAN! As with most things, planning and preparation make perfect! There are a couple of things you need to do: 1) Have a realistic target for the amount of money you would like to raise 2) Look at your current commitments- when can you allocate time to fundraise 3) Think of ideas that are feasible (in line with your skills and time) that will help you reach your target! CASE STUDY Mollie from Cheltenham Bournside School raised a had a sponsored night in a box she asked people to sponsor her to experience being homeless for the night. As well as raising awareness for this important issue, Mollie raised a whopping 1186 towards her expedition in Vietnam and Cambodia. Mollie is currently making plans to run a Motown night at her school and is also organising a car boot and day excursion to Swindon dog racing to raise even more funds. 3 EVENTS Events can add s to your fundraising total.they can be large scale events like hosting a fashion or talent show, or something simple like a paid nonuniform day. There are some ideas on the next page however remember to: 1) Keep it simple- it should be fun and manageable, don t take on too much work 2) Use what you already have and don t be afraid to ask people for help 3) Make it exciting- it needs to be something that people will show up for or would be happy to pay money for 4) Cover your costs- only spend what you know can be made back- you don t want to end up worse off! 5) Spread the word! Social media, local news + radio, posters you name it CASE STUDY Students from Stamford Welland Academy have been busy sawing, sanding and varnishing a pile of locally sourced logs in their break times to create fabulous present ideas and selling them at local Christmas markets and craft fairs brilliant! 4 EVENT IDEAS Here are some ideas submitted by past and present Expeditioners; please do share your ideas too! Send photos and a brief description to questions@farfrontiers.co.uk and we will share them on social media or in future FFE publications. SUMMER Car washing - one of the most popular fundraisers as little cost is required! Find a location that is easy to signpost and easy to get to, then advertise it on your school webpage and social media! If you have the facilities, offer a vacuuming service for an additional cost! Dog walking - train and fundraise at the same time! Don t forget your pooper scooper! Gardening - whether it be mowing the lawn or watering the pots, agree a price before you start work! Do a good job and you may get repeat business! Lemonade or ice-lolly stand is another classic, but always ask permission from where you will be selling your goods - sports days are a great event for this! BBQ get the sausages and burgers on the sizzle at a school event WINTER Making and selling homemade Christmas cards or decorations. Host a festive movie marathon night with popcorn and snacks Offer a Christmas gift wrapping service - ask your local shopping centre if you can set a stall up for the day! Halloween fancy dress/non uniform day - convince your teachers to let you have a Halloween fancy dress, there can be a prize for the best dressed (scariest!) 5 ALL YEAR ROUND Themed meals - for example Moroccan Tagine dishes. Make sure to charge more for the tickets than the meals will cost you to make/buy! Bake sales because who doesn t love cookies, chocolate and cake!? Sell your old stuff! CD s, DVD s, Video Games - you might just have what someone else is looking for! Sell pizza, cakes, hotdogs on certain days of the week e.g. Tasty Tuesdays or at school events - parents evenings, sports days, etc. Bag packing at your local supermarket- ask if you can do this once a month before your expedition If you have some talented team members e.g. musicians/artists/linguists, offer after school workshops for a small fee! Hold talent shows/fashion shows/battle of the bands at your school Auction your skills to the highest bidder! There might be a painter in the group who could do a painting for the highest bidder, or a photographer who could do some pet portraits?! 7 LETTERS There are organisations that exist who offer funds or bursaries to people who are undertaking adventurous and exciting exploits. Get in touch with your local council, youth clubs, scout groups, lions clubs as well as contacting local businesses that you may already have associations with. Be positive! If you are writing to organisations or local businesses explain who you are, what you are doing, and why their contribution will make a positive difference to you, the country you are visiting, or the project you are raising money for (if you know it!) Remember 1) Introduce yourself to the organisation you are writing to 2) Explain what it is you are doing, if you are requesting a donation towards a raffle for example, tell them about it- when is it, how many people do you expect to attend 3) Tell them about your expedition and what you hope to achieve from it 4) Explain other methods you are using to make money, companies are more likely to donate to or sponsor someone who is putting in a lot of effort and trying more than one way to acquire funds. 5) Could you help the company in anyway- display their sign at your event? Plug them on social media? Tell them! 6) Always remember to follow up any replies or donations with a thank you. Send photos and letters so they can see how they have helped. (Please do not write to Cotswold Outdoor or Nomad travel as these organisations already support Far Frontiers Expeditions by providing discounts to all of our participants) Far Frontiers Expeditions do not currently have a registered charity number; some organisations may as for this. Instead we have Pukka Projects, a charitable arm of Far Frontiers. Go to for more information. 8 FINALLY SHARE your fundraising experiences with us..take photos and videos and write blogs then send them to us ( We can then share your events and achievements on our webpage, your private school expedition webpage, our social media, and in newsletters that get distributed throughout the UK!
