I first need to give a special thanks to Kim Edwards, who has led this organization with full force for the past year as our chapter President. She has truly been an amazing leader and helped to bring this chapter to a new level; it will be hard to fill her shoes, but I know she will remain heavily involved. Additionally, the support of Debi Jones, Danni Breaux, Cheryl Rosenberg, Kathy Garner and Elizabeth Bowes in the continuation of cranking through the challenges and numerous housekeeping items that are presented with the start-up of any new organization have been invaluable. Shawnell Holman has done a fantastic job leading our mentoring efforts and Becky Villaseñor has continued to assist in growing our membership. The enthusiasm and dedication that this group of women presents always seems to amaze me. Additionally, I could not go without recognizing all of our Texas sponsors; we could not do what we do without you! We have continued to combine opportunities to network and socialize with community service outreach, supporting the Capital Area Food Bank, Dress for Success San Antonio, Blessings in a Backpack in Houston, and Genesis Women s Shelter in Dallas. In addition, we have provided opportunities for professional development, including a lunch in Dallas highlighting DFW Airport, a lunch in San Antonio with a San Antonio Economic Region Update, and our First Annual Texas WPF Statewide Conference in Austin, which was a huge success: Former Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson was our Keynote Speaker, with Sherri Greenberg (Director of the Center for Politics & Governance, University of Texas LBJ School of Public Affairs) as the Luncheon Speaker. The conference also had a great informative session panel covering current events in public finance and ended with speaker Melissa Schenker who spoke about achieving balance in our professional and personal lives. This year, we are planning to continue our educational brown bag series to offer public finance seminars in each region, as well as continuing our community service and networking opportunities. ur regional chairs have done an excellent job in spearheading events and activities in their respective areas. Thanks to our Dallas Conference Committee (Marti Shew, Jeanie Yarbrough, Jennie Zhao, Jenny Lurkins and Julie MacMillan) we have a great annual conference planned for this year. Some upcoming events currently underway include: November 20: Networking Events in San Antonio and Austin, TX November/December: Educational seminars, community service and holiday networking January 29, 2014: Second Annual Texas Women in Public Finance Statewide Conference in Dallas Join us for a day of education and networking: The Tower Club, 1601 Elm Street, Dallas, TX February 11: Texas Bond Buyer Conference - Post conference lunch and community service events We are excited to have a strong network of motivated individuals to implement our goals. It goes without saying that this organization is only as effective as its members and the activities we undertake, so I encourage each of you to contact the committee chairs listed on the following page to see how you can get involved, offer suggestions and ideas and to encourage your colleagues to join TxWPF and get involved as well. 5 PAGE 5 MENTRING MATTERS By Shawnell Holman This past spring our chapter's mentoring committee partnered with Texas Southern University's business school for a "Women in Public Finance" luncheon. Attendees from the chapter included Necitha Madison, Becky Villaseñor, and Shawnell Holman. Rather than the lecture format, the event was intentionally more informal to encourage dialogue. The University invited their top graduate students who posed a broad range of questions after brief introductions. Inquiries ranged from the very generic (i.e. what exactly is public finance) to the more specific focusing on work/life balance aspects of the industry. Because several students requested follow up information, the University's dean has asked if our chapter would be interested in establishing a more formal mentoring program. Subsequent meetings are planned to discuss in more detail. It was a wonderful event, and we would like to thank the University for welcoming us with open arms. I'm not sure who had more fun the students or the chapter members. Finally, I never tire of stressing the value of outreach. More often than not we receive just as much as we put into the mentoring relationships. So I invite you to join the Mentoring Committee as we take on new endeavors.
