e-motion! Coputer 21 Have you ever wondered how autoatic door at grocery tore know when to open? There i a enor over the door that work iilarly to Go! Motion. Go! Motion end out ound wave that reflect fro object, uch a your body. Baed on the aount of tie it take the wave to bounce back, Go! Motion i able to calculate the poition of the object. OBJECTIVES In thi activity, you will Explore the different line and curve produced by oving in front of the Go! Motion. Learn to write detailed tep for creating an M or W hape on the graph. Match different letter and deign drawn on the graph. MATERIALS coputer with Logger Lite oftware intalled Go! Motion otion detector PROCEDURE Part I Creating Straight-Line Graph Such a M, N, and W 1. Do the following to et up the Go! Motion for data collection: a. Make ure the Go! Motion i connected to the coputer. b. Set the witch on the Go! Motion to the Noral etting a hown here. You can find the witch by pivoting the head of the Go! Motion. Evaluation copy 2. Start Logger Lite on your coputer. 3. Open the file for thi activity by doing the following: a. Click the Open button,. b. Open the folder called Eleentary Science. c. Open the file called 21 e Motion. Eleentary Science with Vernier 21-1
Coputer Set the Go! Motion on a table o that there i an open path at leat 2 eter wide and 3 eter long in front of it. You hould face the enor and ut alo be able to ee the coputer creen or have it projected for the entire cla. 5. Before you begin, review the different egent you can create uing the Go! Motion by copleting the table below. (The height of each egent cell repreent 3 eter and the tie i 10 econd for each cell.) Segent Starting poition Direction (forward or backward) Tie Speed (fat or low) r e t e econd 6. Ue the Predict button,, on the tool bar to draw a large letter M hape on the graph. An exaple i hown below Eleentary Science with Vernier
e-motion! 7. In thi part of the activity, you will coplete the tep neceary to create the letter M on the graph. You will have a total of 10 econd. a. Start eter fro the Go! Motion. b. Stand till for econd(). c. Move (forward or backward) for econd oving (fat or low). d. Move (forward or backward) for econd oving (fat or low). e. Move (forward or backward) for econd oving (fat or low). f. Move (forward or backward) for econd oving (fat or low). g. Stand till for the lat econd(). 8. Etiate the ditance fro the enor needed to begin the M and then tand in front of the Go! Motion, facing it, at that poition. 9. Have one peron click, and when you hear fat clicking, follow the direction in Step If the graph of the M look like your prediction, congratulation! If you want to try to ake the M again, jut click, and follow the direction you filled out in Step You will now ake the letter N. To get tarted, do the following thing: a. Chooe Clear All Data fro the Data enu on the coputer creen. c. Draw a big letter N on the creen. Eleentary Science with Vernier 21-3
Coputer On the line below, write down the tep you would take to atch the letter N that you drew on the coputer creen. Ue the word in Step 7 a a pattern. Step for atching the letter N: 13. Have one tudent tand in the right place in front of the Go! Motion, then have another tudent click. When you hear fat clicking, follow the direction you wrote in Step 12 for aking the letter N. 14. If the graph of the N look like your prediction, congratulation! If you want to try to ake the N again, jut click, and follow the direction you wrote in Step You will now ake the letter W. To get tarted, do the following thing: a. Chooe Clear All Data fro the Data enu. c. Draw a big letter W on the creen. 16. On the line below, write down the tep you would take to atch the letter W that you drew on the coputer creen. Ue the word in Step 7 and 12 a a pattern. Step for atching the letter W: 21-4 Eleentary Science with Vernier
e-motion! 17. Have one peron tand in the right place in front of the Go! Motion, then have another tudent click. When you hear fat clicking, follow the direction you wrote in Step 16 for aking the letter W. 18. If the graph of the W look like your prediction, congratulation! If you want to try the W again, jut click, and follow the direction you wrote in Step 16. Part II e-motion-al Graph You have now ade three letter with traight-line egent. Now let try expreing our e-otion by aking a happy face and a ad face on the graph! 19. You will now ake a happy face. To get tarted, do the following thing: a. Chooe Clear All Data fro the Data enu. c. Uing the exaple above, draw a happy face on the graph. You will ake the ad face later on. 20. Write the tep you hould follow to atch the happy face graph that you drew. Ue the direction you wrote above a a guide for what to write. Eleentary Science with Vernier 21-5
Coputer Have one peron tand in the right place in front of the Go! Motion, then have another tudent click. When you hear fat clicking, follow the direction you wrote in Step 20 for aking the happy face. 22. If the graph of the happy face atche the line that you drew, congratulation! If you want to try to ake the happy face again, jut click, and follow the direction you wrote in Step You will now ake a ad face. To get tarted, do the following thing: a. Chooe Clear All Data fro the Data enu. c. Uing the exaple above, draw a ad face on the graph. 24. Write what you need to do to atch the ad face: 25. Have one peron tand in the right place in front of the Go! Motion, then have another tudent click. When the you hear fat clicking, follow the direction you wrote in Step 24 for aking the ad face. 26. If the graph of the ad face atche the ad face that you drew, congratulation! If you want to try to ake the ad face again, jut click, and follow the direction you wrote in Step 24. Good job! 21-6 Eleentary Science with Vernier
