e-motion! LabQuet 21 Have you ever wondered how autoatic door at grocery tore know when to open? There i a enor over the door that work iilarly to Motion Detector. Motion Detector end out ound wave that reflect fro object, uch a your body. Baed on the aount of tie it take the wave to bounce back, Motion Detector i able to calculate the poition of the object. OBJECTIVES In thi activity, you will Explore the different line and curve produced by oving in front of the Motion Detector. Learn to write detailed tep for creating an M or W hape on the graph. Match different letter and deign drawn on the graph. MATERIALS LabQuet Vernier Motion Detector PROCEDURE Part I Creating Straight-Line Graph Such a M, N, and W 1. Do the following to et up the Motion Detector for data collection: a. Make ure the Motion Detector i connected to LabQuet. b. Set the witch on the Motion Detector to the Noral etting a hown here. You can find the witch by pivoting the head of the Motion Detector. c. Chooe New fro the File enu. d. On the Meter creen, tap Length. Change the data-collection length to 10 econd. e. Tap the Graph tab. Chooe Show Graph fro the Graph enu and elect Graph 1. Thi will diplay a graph of poition v. tie. Eleentary Science with Vernier 21-1

1 2 3 eter LabQuet Set the Motion Detector on a table o that there i an open path at leat 2 eter wide and 3 eter long in front of it. You hould face the enor and ut alo be able to ee the LabQuet creen. 3. Before you begin, review the different egent you can create uing the Motion Detector by copleting the table below. (The height of each egent cell repreent 3 eter and the tie i 10 econd for each cell.) Segent Starting poition Direction (forward or backward) Tie Speed (fat or low) econd 4. In thi part of the activity, you will coplete writing the tep neceary to create the letter M uing a Motion Detector. An exaple of what thi ight look like i hown to the right. Think about how you would ake a iilar M hape and fill in the blank below. You will have a total of 10 econd. a. Start eter fro the Motion Detector. b. Stand till for econd(). c. Move (forward or backward) for econd oving (fat or low). d. Move (forward or backward) for econd oving (fat or low) Eleentary Science with Vernier

e. Move (forward or backward) for econd oving (fat or low). f. Move (forward or backward) for econd oving (fat or low). g. Stand till for the lat econd(). 5. Etiate the ditance fro the enor needed to begin the M and then tand in front of the Motion Detector, facing it, at that poition. 6. Have one peron tart data collection, and when you hear fat clicking, follow the direction in Step 4. Note: Be ure to keep your hand at your ide and a till a poible. 7. If the graph of the M look like the exaple, congratulation! If you want to try to ake the M again, jut tart data collection, and follow the direction you filled out in Step You will now ake the letter N. To get tarted, do the following thing: a. Chooe New fro the File enu. b. On the Meter creen, tap Length. Change the data-collection length to 10 econd. c. Chooe Show Graph fro the Graph enu and elect Graph 1. Thi will diplay a graph of poition v. tie. 9. On the line below, write down the tep you would take to atch the letter N. Ue the word in Step 4 a a pattern. Step for atching the letter N: e-motion! Eleentary Science with Vernier 21-3

LabQuet Have one tudent tand in the right place in front of the Motion Detector, then have another tudent tart data collection. When you hear fat clicking, follow the direction you wrote in Step 9 for aking the letter N. 11. If the graph of the N look like the exaple, congratulation! If you want to try to ake the N again, jut tart data collection, and follow the direction you wrote in Step You will now ake the letter W. To get tarted, do the following thing: a. Chooe New fro the File enu. b. On the Meter creen, tap Length. Change the data-collection length to 10 econd. c. Tap the Graph tab. Chooe Show Graph fro the Graph enu and elect Graph 1. Thi will diplay a graph of poition v. tie. 13. On the line below, write down the tep you would take to atch the letter W. Ue the word in Step 4 and 9 a a pattern. Step for atching the letter W: 14. Have one peron tand in the right place in front of the Motion Detector, then have another tudent tart data collection. When you hear fat clicking, follow the direction you wrote in Step 13 for aking the letter W Eleentary Science with Vernier

e-motion! 15. If the graph of the W look like the exaple, congratulation! If you want to try the W again, jut tart data collection, and follow the direction you wrote in Step 13. Part II e-motion-al Graph You have now ade three letter with traight-line egent. Now let try expreing our eotion by aking a happy face and a ad face on the graph! 16. You will now ake a happy face. To get tarted, do the following thing: a. Chooe New fro the File enu. b. On the Meter creen, tap Length. Change the data-collection length to 10 econd. c. Tap the Graph tab. Chooe Show Graph fro the Graph enu and elect Graph 1. Thi will diplay a graph of poition v. tie. 17. Write the tep you hould follow to atch the happy face graph hown in the exaple. Ue the direction you wrote above a a guide for what to write. 18. Have one peron tand in the right place in front of the Motion Detector, then have another tudent tart data collection. When you hear fat clicking, follow the direction you wrote in Step 17 for aking the happy face. 19. If the graph of the happy face atche the exaple, congratulation! If you want to try to ake the happy face again, jut tart data collection and follow the direction you wrote in Step You will now ake a ad face. To get tarted, do the following thing: Eleentary Science with Vernier 21-5

LabQuet 21 a. Chooe New fro the File enu. b. On the Meter creen, tap Length. Change the data-collection length to 10 econd. c. Tap the Graph tab. Chooe Show Graph fro the Graph enu and elect Graph 1. Thi will diplay a graph of poition v. tie. 21. Write what you need to do to atch the ad face: 22. Have one peron tand in the right place in front of the Motion Detector, then have another tudent tart data collection. When you hear fat clicking, follow the direction you wrote in Step 21 for aking the ad face. 23. If the graph of the ad face atche the ad face exaple, congratulation! If you want to try to ake the ad face again, jut tart data collection, and follow the direction you wrote in Step 21. Good job! 21-6 Eleentary Science with Vernier
