1 Wiring Your Dream Home Project Throughout the electricity unit, we have learned about how electricity works, how a circuit works, different types of circuits, and how to build and draw them. For this project, you will be building a model home, designing and wiring the circuits of your home, and designing the interior of your home. The purpose of this assignment is to allow you the opportunity to connect your classroom learning to technology in the real world. You are allowed to work in groups of three (3). Creativity and enjoyment is encouraged! PHASE 1: Designing and Planning [15 points] Design your house. Plan and draw a floor plan of your dream house. Create a floor plan that accurately depict your dream home. Each house must contain: o 3-4 rooms (can be 2 stories or a bungalow) 30X30X30 cm or 27,000 cm 3 A series circuit room: two lights in series with a switch in one room. A parallel circuit room: three lights in parallel w/a switch in one room. One switch controls all the lights and the other controls one light. The parallel circuit may be used with other rooms in the house. o o A single outside light with a separate switch. A total of at least five lights (lamps) or LEDS (light emitting dials) 1 master or control switch Additional Requirement: You must have one or more of the following o Motor, 2-way switch, door buzzers or house alarms, resistors, capacitors, or anything else that is fun (teacher approved) PHASE 2: Approval of Building Plans & Blueprint (House Dimensions) [30 points] You must provide a schematic diagram (or circuit diagram) for the complete circuit in your dream home (all rooms). You may do it in whole (whole house) or in parts (room by room). It must: o Be labeled and completed including all electrical components for each using accurate symbols. o Be neat and drawn with a straight edge and fill an entire 8.5 X 11 paper. o Circuit diagrams can be separated into a whole (entire house) or each paper = 1 room. You must provide a blueprint from the construction of your dream home. It must: o Blueprint is the elevation view (home seen from the side) what it looks like from the side with all dimensions (Google sketch up is a great app for this and its free.) o Have a floor plan (horizontal section cut through a building) what it looks like on the inside showing walls, windows, door, and furniture arrangements (floorplanner.com is great to use). 2 Floor Plan, Blue Print, & Circuit Diagram Rubric: Area Evaluated Advanced (15 points) Floor Plan Includes diagram for all the rooms. All furniture, appliance, doors, and windows are placed in the floor plan. All miscellaneous items are also placed in plan. Blue Print Includes front elevation and side Schematic Diagram (Circuit Diagram) elevation. Drawing is neat, correctly scaled, and clearly labeled on graph paper or of professional quality. All lines are straight and neat with labels. Electrical components and symbols for each are used. Schematic diagram accurately depicts wiring of each room. Parallel circuit = two switches controlling all and the other controlling only one of the lights. Series circuit =one switch and two lights. Description Proficient (10 points) One of the two required floor plan element missing. Drawing is slightly messy, missing labels, or incorrectly labeled. PHASE 3: Construction Phase Upon approval of your building plan by the City (your teacher or an expert) you may begin the actual construction of your model home. Structural materials can include but are not limited to: cardboard, foam board, shoeboxes, etc. To earn full credit each circuit mentioned above must be present and working in class when attached to a single 6-9V battery (or power supply set to 6-9V). How you construct your dream home is up to you as long as it still meets the requirements. There will be a few open build workshops after school if you need help. The following are design suggestions: o Your house will be powered by a 6-9V battery so make an obvious 2 leads to attach your battery to during testing if you do not supply your own battery. o Each circuit must be able to work independently from the other but must all be able to be on at the same time without moving the battery. o Insulated wires and lights will be provided. Requests for additional materials may be given and will be available at a later time. PHASE 4: Model Home Inspection (60 points) After your building is submitted a building inspector will use the following checklist to make sure you have met all of the requirements. If your model home fails to meet any of the requirements, you will be asked to pay a fine (point deduction). In order for the building inspector to evaluate your model home, you must first conduct your own inspection: 2

At least one of the following included: motor, 2 way switch, door buzzer, house alarm, other: X PHASE 5: Design Evaluation (20 points) Every building that is built must be solid to turn a profit. Decorating your model home can help to ensure quick sale (and full points). Your model home is to be decorated neatly, with care and: Should reflect the purpose of the rooms (i.e. a stove/oven should not be in a bedroom) All inside surfaces of your building (walls, floors, etc.) must be covered or colored. Cardboard brown IS NOT an appropriate design choice. Some kind of 3D objects (tables, beds, chairs, etc.) must be present in each room. Pictures of furniture IS NOT 3D furniture. You may NOT use premade furniture, toys, people, Legos, etc. Everything must be made for this project. Suitable materials for furniture include origami, wood, modeling clay, plastic, shiskabob sticks, Popsicle sticks, etc. Please utilize recyclable materials in and around your home. You DO NOT need to purchase any materials to build furniture. In order to determine the design appeal of your model home and to help prepare it for sale, the real estate agent will use the following to evaluate your home. Area Evaluated Décor Furniture and Structure Advanced (8-10 points) The rooms are well decorated and it is obvious that care was taken to do so. Wires are snug to the wall/floor and not showing. The rooms have an obvious purpose. The furniture appears to be well built and the structure of the building seems solid. At least one of the following include: motor, 2 way switch, door buzzer, etc. Description Proficient (7-5 points) Below Proficient (1-4 pts) There has been some effort to decorate the result is not clean or care was not taken. The purpose of the room is slightly unclear. The furniture is questionable or the structure seems lower quality. One of the requirements not met. The rooms are sloppy or undecorated. The purpose is unclear. The furniture appears poorly made or unsafe. The building structure appears poorly made or unsafe. 3
4 PHASE 6: Oral Presentation to Real Estate Agent [30 points] Once you have completed your model home you will need to present your home to the real estate agent and city officials (HECO representative, an architect, and an engineer will also be on hand). The following questions need to be answered in your presentation: 1) Why did you build your house the way you did? 2) Explain the wiring, circuitry, and calculations of resistance and power usage. 3) What additional features were added to your house and why? 4) What were some of the challenges you encountered and how did you resolve your problems? 5) What other features would you have wanted to add to the house but could not do so because of expenses? Explain how you would have done it. PHASE 7: REFLECTION [30 points] Before you turn in your project, as an INDIVIDUAL, you must do the following: Paragraph about your contributions and effort to the house (what you did in and outside class, how you made up for any absences from class or designated work times you had) A description (in your own words) about your wiring and how the electricity will act in your house when the batteries are connected. o Refer to the diagram as you write. (ie. When switch A is closed, bulb A lights because ) o Describe what happens when certain switches are open or closed. o You do not need to describe the alarm. THIS MUST BE DONE INDIVIDUALLY. You can discuss the house with your partners, but when you go to write use your own words. Identical or near-identical responses will be penalized. 4

Describes methodology (especially circuitry and challenges in building plan). The talk is logical. Conclusion: Summarizes major points of talk. Summarizes potential weaknesses (if any) in findings. Provides you with a take-home message. Speaks clearly and at an understandable pace. Maintains eye contact with audience. Well-rehearsed (either extemporaneous or scripted presentation). Limited use of filler words ( umm, like, etc.). Speaker uses body language appropriately. Speaker is within time limits. Speaker is able to answer questions professionally. Speaker is dressed appropriately. Visual Aid Graphs/figures are clear and understandable. The text is readable and clear. Audio/Visual components support the main points of the talk. 6 4 th QUARTER PROJECT DREAM HOUSE CHECKLIST: [10 points] FLOOR PLAN The following may be done by hand (MUST use a straight edge or ruler and should be neat) or by an app. We went over using floorplanner.com which is a free app online. All floor plans MUST be printed and hard copy submitted. No digital copies will be accepted! Includes 3-4 rooms A series circuit two light in series with a switch in one room A parallel circuit three lights with a switch that controls all lights and another switch that controls only one of the lights. A master control switch for the entire house A single outdoor light on a separate switch Optional: Door buzzer, alarm, or motor for the house. BLUE PRINT The following may be done by hand (MUST use a straight edge or ruler and should be neat) and on graph paper or by an app. We went over using google sketch which is a free app online. All blue prints MUST be printed and hard copy submitted. No digital copies will be accepted! Building seen from the side (front and side elevation view) Includes roof, windows, and doors Scaling is used for the size of the house CIRCUIT DIAGRAM The following should be done by hand. Appropriate symbols are used for each electrical component Circuit diagram can be of whole house on one paper or each paper could be of each room, but entire paper must be used Includes 3-4 rooms A series circuit two light in series with a switch in one room A parallel circuit three lights with a switch that controls all lights and another switch that controls only one of the lights. CONSTRUCTION OF MODEL HOME & INTERIOR DESIGN Next Week 2 class periods (85 minute each) will be used to start building your house, make sure you have materials ready to go Construction of house itself could be of cardboard, plywood, or any other material that you would like to use. They need not be bought many materials can be found around the house. Should reflect the purpose of the rooms (i.e. a stove/oven should not be in a bedroom) All inside surfaces of your building (walls, floors, etc.) must be covered or colored. Clickers will be provided. REFLECTION This is a total of 2-3 paragraphs done individually. CUPS (capitalization, usage (or grammar), punctuation, and spelling) will also be graded.
