1 The Clay Street Cottage, designed by Bill Allison consists of 918 sq. feet. This cottage may be turned with either end facing the street depending on whether the smaller bedroom is used as a den or a bedroom. The ceilings are 11 high. The structure is on a raised foundation. Plan Not to Scale
2 Katrina Cottage Katrina Cottage Clay Street Cottage Project/Class Katrina Cottage Clay Street Cottage ID 240 Interior Design II Summer 2009 Overview: You are employed as a design assistant with a firm that will be designing a 918 sq. foot cottage known as the Clay Street Cottage. The Katrina cottage consists of two bedrooms, 1 bath, a living area and kitchen. You have been asked to write the program, prepare plans and elevations, provide color renderings and select all the FF&E for the residence. In addition, you will prepare NKBA drawings and specifications for the kitchen, provide a client estimate for the new furnishings and accessories, develop presentation boards and create a ½ scale model of the kitchen/living area. Project Requirements: The firm you are working for has taken on this fast paced job and has set multiple check dates in order to meet a June 30 th deadline for client presentation. It is critical that you meet these deadlines in order to complete the project on time. You will have to work full time on this project in order to meet the tight deadline. Your boss assures you that if you successfully complete this project, you will be given some much needed R and R immediately following the presentation. Refer to the class agenda on the website for critical check dates. Phase I: Preliminary Design: (40 points) The class will determine the client background and needs for the cottage. The cottage was previously used as a temporary home for the client after hurricane Katrina, but with a new home completed, they wish to convert the cottage into a guest house/home office. The class will need to determine how the cottage will be used as well as the client s objectives for the renovation. You may need to make minor revisions to a few partitions in the bedroom area and will also be asked to provide designs for a full kitchen renovation. All preliminary work will be completed on trash paper and placed in the project notebook. A final program will be typed by each student and placed inside the project notebook as well. You will be graded on this phase through the following processes: Development of a written program, logo/project title, trash drawings showing design processes /schematic designs, bubble diagram, and a written concept. See grading criteria at the end of this handout. Phase II: Design Development: (160 points) Each student will be required to transpose the floor plan into a ¼ scaled floor plan, re-design and specify new kitchen cabinets and appliances, select, specify and draw in the furnishings, and select the finishes for the cottage. You will consider and provide examples of the following: Flooring, walls, countertops, ceiling color, architectural woodwork (trim and cabinets), furniture, fabrics and accessories (artwork, plants, cabinet hardware, lighting, etc.) As you make your selections, you should document the manufacturer, model number and price for all furnishings. These items will be included in a price quote to the client and should fall within the budget established during the programming phase.
3 Phase III: Client Presentation(s) (100 points) Each student will provide the appropriate number of visual boards that include a rendered floor plan at 3/16 scale, 2 rendered elevations at ½ scale (from the private zone), images of furniture and accessories, and actual finish samples. In addition, you will provide 2 sets of vellum drawings for the kitchen renovations that include the proposed kitchen plan at ½ scale with specifications and 4 elevations at ½ scale. These vellum drawings will be printed on 11 x 17 vellum on NKBA title blocks and bound with a black binding. You will also complete a ½ scaled presentation model of the kitchen/living area. Client presentations will be made the afternoon of June 30 th.
