1 Elizabethtown Area School District Computer Aided Drafting & Design (CADD) Course Number: 762 Length of Course: 1 semester 18 weeks Grade Level: Elective Total Clock Hours: 120 hours Length of Period: 80 minutes Date Written: July 16, 2008 Periods per Week/Cycle: 5 periods / week Written By: Bernard McGinty Credits (if app): 1.0 Pathway: Engineering, Science & Technology Prerequisite: Geometry Placement Criteria: Understand basic computer operations and concepts Course Description: This course covers all aspects of contemporary mechanical, engineering, architectural, and 3-D solids creation by use of a computer. Students will learn the basic concepts of scale drawings and orthographic projections by making simple two- and three-dimensional drawings using Computer Aided Design software. This course is designed to provide students with the basic understanding of CADD computer software, three-view, orthographic, and three- dimensional drawings to create and understand engineered products. Various projects and activities will include designing two-dimensional and three-dimensional scale drawings using a CADD software program, create sectional view drawings, create a floor plan of a house, design and engineer a file folder bridge, and design and engineer various problem solving machines. Computer Aided Drafting & Design 1
2 I. Overall Course/Grade Level Standards Students will KNOW and be able TO DO the following as a result of taking this course. A) Evaluate the interrelationship of various engineering and architectural systems in the world, community, and daily life and how the design of these systems was created. B) Successfully use the program AutoDesk Auto Cad (or other technical drafting/drawing computer programs) to create working drawings. C) Apply the use of a plotter instead of a printer when creating cad-generated drawings. D) Create one, two, and three view drawings of a three-dimensional object. E) Create three-dimensional drawings from single or multi-view objects. F) Create and design multiple part exploded view drawings. G) Apply accurate measurement knowledge to solve engineering and architecture design problems. H) Select and safely apply appropriate tools, materials and processes necessary to solve complex engineering problems that could result in more than one solution. I) Apply the laws; principles and phenomena that describe engineered systems through the development and production of working engineered systems models. J) Design, create, and understand floor plan layout of commercial buildings and residential structure. K) Evaluate and assess the solution to engineered problems through redesign and improvements as necessary. L) Work collaboratively with other students, teachers, and community to create, implement and evaluate solutions to technological or drafting design problems. Computer Aided Drafting & Design 2
3 M) Assess and predict the impacts that CADD systems have on engineering and architecture that affect the economy, society, and environment by balancing multiple constraints and providing trade-offs. N) Evaluate the effectiveness of software to produce engineered and architectural drawings and demonstrate the process. O) Utilize decision-making strategies commonly used by engineers. 14 TOTAL: CAD Architectural Design Problem Solvers & Solutions Design Brief: There is a great urban renewal taking place in downtown Shenandoah. The town was founded during the early-mid 1800 s, and was originally a small mining town. The local bank would like to build a new branch on the Main Street corner. The president of the bank tells you they only require 2500 square feet of space, all to be on one floor. Your site is 80 feet by 100 feet; the 80 feet is the street front. Fundamentals of Drafting Content Standards and Objectives: Perform mathematical computations as they relate to creating accurate drawings. How do I use drafting tools? Properly use software to create drawings using basic commands. Properly save and plot a drawing. Communication Systems Content Standards and Objectives: Perform mathematical computations as they relate to communication activities (page layout, circuitry problems, etc.) Generate ideas and design solutions to solve problems through sketches, drawings, and notes. Construction Systems Content Standards and Objectives: Design a living space, identifying basic and non-basic activity areas; plan traffic flow pattern and efficient room layout. Requirements: Design a floor plan that includes a lobby, teller space, three small offices, and one larger office. There must also be a kitchen/break area, a rest room for employees, a 4 x 4 x 8 safe, and a janitor s storage. If you have time, show a front elevation to give the president an idea of what the bank will look like from Main Street. Computer Aided Drafting & Design 14
