2 Name: Date: Per: Natural selection - Comic strip Assignment: Create a comic strip story that demonstrates your understanding of Darwin s theory of evolution by natural selection. Natural selection a mechanism of evolution Charles Darwin first published his theory of evolution by natural selection in 1859 in his book titled The Origin of Species. Evolution is the process by which new species come into existence and natural selection is the mechanism by which evolution occurs. During natural selection organisms that are better suited to their environment survive and reproduce, thereby passing on their genes to the next generation. The six principles of evolution via natural selection are outlined below. 1. Overproduction: Each species produces more offspring than can survive. Ø Example: Some butterflies will lay up to 0 eggs on a single bush. 2. Competition: Overpopulation causes members of the same species, as well as other species, to compete for limited resources such as food, water, and a place to live. Ø Example: Butterfly larvae (caterpillars) compete for host plants. For instance, the monarch butterfly caterpillar competes for a single species of plant called a milkweed. 3. variation: Organisms within a population vary. Ø Example: Butterflies of the same species have uniue genotypes which will produce different phenotypes (observable characteristics such as size, coloration, spots, wingspan, etc.) 4. Adaptation: An individual may inherit a genetic trait which increases their chances of survival. Ø Example: One butterfly may be born with a uniue color which helps it blend in better to the environment. 5. Natural selection: Organisms which inherit favorable traits are more likely to survive and produce offspring which will inherit the favorable trait. Ø Example: The butterflies that can blend in to their environment will be less likely to be eaten. Thus, they will survive more often to produce offspring with the same favorable coloration. 6. Speciation: Favorable adaptations gradually accumulate and unfavorable adaptations will disappear over many generations. After a very long period of time, a new species can form. Ø Example: After an extremely long period of time (think one million years!) a new butterfly species may develop. There are about 17,500 species of butterflies in the world. Each different species of butterfly went through the process of natural selection. Comic expectations Your comic should take the reader on a journey through the process of natural selection. Each panel should represent one of the six principles of natural selection. You need to include a caption that tells the reader what step you are on. For example, your first caption could be Overproduction or any fun comic-style title of your choice that fits the description. Your comic must contain illustrated scenes and dialogue, within comic bubbles, that match your storyline. Your illustrated scenes should be labeled where appropriate. Sorry, no stick figures allowed! Proper spelling and grammar should be used and all wording should be legible (easy to read). Your comic should be neat and colorful. Be creative! Tell your story in a fun comic-style fashion. You should create a comic character to match your story. For example, you could take the role of a particular type of organism that is born with a uniue adaptation that it passes onto its offspring. Over many generations, and through the process of natural selection, the populations will evolve to becomes a new species. Due Date:
