Ohio St., Fortville, IN Meeting Minutes, October 2nd, 2016 The October club meeting was held at Minnetrista in Muncie, Indiana. Club Vice President Mike James opened the meeting and welcomed 7 club members. Jim Durr gave the Treasurer s report for October. There were some expenses for the newsletter. The club continues to maintain a positive bank balance. Colleen Dixon asked the club members to think about ideas to increase attendance at the local club meetings. Several ideas were brought up, but no decisions were made: speakers, planned programs, Minnetrista tour, field trips to area museums (Dunkirk, Greentown), and a repeat of Dick Cole s glass history driving tour of Muncie. Dave Rittenhouse mentioned that show contracts for our January Show will be mailed out in November. The show will be held January 8th, 2017 at the Horizon Convention Center. You should book your rooms at The Baymont Inn hotel now. There will be the usual room hopping and Fruit Jar Get-Together on January 7th. I would like to throw a little light on a couple of subjects. vember 19th, 2016 (Saturday) Terre Haute, Indiana The 20th Annual Illiana Antique Bottle & Pottery Show & Sale at the Vigo County Fairgrounds, 3901 S. US Highway 41, Terre Haute, Indiana, Saturday, Free Admission 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. The next club meeting will be held November 6th at Minnetrista in the Cantina at 1:30pm in Muncie, Indiana. The theme for Show and Tell is Favorite item or story about your collection. Respectfully submitted, Joe Coulson In both Fruit Jars and Bottle Makers and Their Marks by Julian Harrison Toulouse, he tells the tale that the Swayzee Glass Company encountered financial trouble when the molds that they had made to their order in Canada were for the 40 oz. Canadian quarts instead of the 32 oz. U.S. quart. The jars were too large and the

2 Tilting at Windmills, Part 1, cont d people were refusing to buy them. Actually the capacity of an Imperial Quart is U.S. ounces. I doubt that retailers, the people who were buying the jars of that time, ever bothered to measure the actual capacity of the jars that they sold. What housewife would refuse to buy a jar that she could can more product in when it was being sold at the same price as a regular quart jar? Toulouse obtained his information from Swayzee postmaster and historian G. Marshall who claimed to have been a boy worker at the factory. With the aid of the Indiana Room and Genealogy Department personnel of the Marion Public Library I found the facts of Glendell D. Marshall who had been postmaster of Swayzee, Indiana. Mr. Marshall was born in 1916 and died at the age of 71. Ball Brothers purchased the Swayzee Glass Company in early 1906 and closed it down and never operated it. Toulouse not knowing anyone in Swayzee wrote to the postmaster seeking someone with information. The small town postmaster decided to have some fun with the city slicker and spun out the tale. Of the 10 Swayzee s Improved Mason jars in my collection 8 are undersize, 2 measure 32 oz. brim full. Make small jars and you can sell more of them to the housewife. Louis E. Ebert Lou shared a copy of a 1901 Standard Illustrated Catalogue and Price List for Flint and Green Moulds. The pictures above show the cover page as well as a bottle mold page and a fruit jar mold page. The cost of fruit jars molds is very interesting and not something you normally see. Page 2

You can visit the page at this address: Larry has all 18 jars (six different colors; each in three different sizes: pint, quart, half gallon) in this series of Mason s Patent Nov 30 TH 1858 reproductions. All of the pints have 44 on the base. The quarts have 7 on the base. The half gallons have the Hero cross emblem on the front, and Pat. Nov and 469 on the base. It consists of an unembossed Lightning style jar and a heavy cast iron attachment which includes the dispenser pump. Dave says he has also seen the jar with Wagner embossed on it (RB #2905-5). The Jelly Jammers will meet on Saturday, October 15th, at 3:00 PM at the Sterling Center during dealer setup. There will be a Jelly Jammer sales table at the show again this year.
