Please contact Dick Cole about items which you would like to check out. Membership The Midwest Glass Chatter is a monthly publication and is a forum through which collectors can share information. Membership cost is $15.00 per year, per family, due each January 31. All jar/bottle related collectors are welcome. Send to MAFJBC, Attn: James Durr, 500 W. Ohio St., Fortville, IN The March club meeting was held at Minnetrista in Muncie, Indiana. Club President Mike James opened the meeting and welcomed the following members: Mike Mosier, Colleen & Jerry Dixon, Mike & Gusty Monaghan, Dave Rittenhouse, and Jim Durr. A reminder that at the club's December meeting Diane Barts (Registrar and Collections Specialist at the Minnetrista museum) spoke briefly to those in attendance. She is trying to gather a history of all of the glass houses she can from the east central Indiana area. If you have any information, call Diane: Jim Durr gave the Treasurer s report for March. The club continues to maintain a positive bank balance. Expenses included the January Show bills as well as the cost of the newsletters. Income came from show items and membership dues. Dave Rittenhouse gave a detailed report on the January Show. Total income was $3,485. Total expenses were $3,034. The income included table sales, admissions, club table items, donations given with dues, and donated auction items. The expenses included magazine advertising, cost of club T-shirts, cost of donuts, cost of stamps / copies / envelopes, and convention center rental. The difference between income and expenses was a positive $451. Due to the auction and admissions the show still had a profit in spite of the increased costs for the convention center. Dave noted that many of the dealers he spoke with felt they had better sales than previous years. Dave mentioned that he will contact the Muncie Visitors Bureau and give them a list of our club s meeting dates. This might be a way to direct new people to our meetings. Jerry Dixon will arrange for a club information table at the Mansfield, Ohio bottle show on May 11th. Dave will share the responsibility of the club table. Dave is going to arrange for a new batch of club T-shirts to be made, so they can be sold at the club info table at this event. The club is also considering having an information table at the Cambridge City Show on Saturday, June 8th. An update was given on the new venue for next year s show headquarters. As previously mentioned, the Courtyard Marriott (phone ) will be the new hotel, and it has a connecting hallway to the Horizon Convention Center. The hotel address is: 601 South High Street. We have blocked 30+ rooms on the third floor, and we will expand to the fourth floor if required. There is a direct link at the end of this newsletter and on the club website to make your room reservation. The link takes you straight to our club s group arrangement. The hotel has an elevator. The cost is $99 per night. You can make your reservations from now until December 8, The rate is good for any dates in the range of January 7 to Janu-

Colleen Dixon shared an emerald green HG (RB #2308 / SFJR #1028) Greek key design around shoulder and lower portion of jar (base: Patented July 27 th 1886); an emerald green PT (RB #2538 / SFJR #1148) Safety Valve Patd May 21, 1895; a green QT (RB #481 / SFJR #211) Boldt Mason Jar (unlisted color); and a yellow green PT (RB #240 / SFJR #117) Ball Mason. Jerry Dixon displayed three Hemingray refrigerator water bottles: two quart "Waterfall" design, Pat. Sept. 15, 1931, "7-Up" green; one quart "Waterfall" design, Pat. Sept. 15, 1931, "7- Up" green; and a one quart "George Washington Bicentennial ( )", "7-Up" green. The author of the website states that this patent (#86,659) was issued to Earnest E. Bilby on April 5, 1932, which contradicts the patent listed on the bottles. Possibly the earlier date is a "patent applied for" date. These bottles were manufactured in Muncie, Indiana through the 1930's and possibly beyond. There were fifteen designs and one plain variety available. Jerry also displayed a chicken waterer made by the Oakes Mfg. Co., Tipton, Indiana with a Swayzee's Improved Mason. Both were an apple green color. Oakes Mfg. Co. started in Bloomington, Indiana around 1892 and moved to Tipton in They were manufacturers of poultry and hog equipment. Oakes was taken over by FMC Corporation in In 1966 the poultry and hog operations were sent to Bramco, Inc., Canton, Georgia. Firefighting equipment was made at the Tipton site. Mike Mosier brought a few January Show purchases. He shared an aqua HG (RB #189 / SFJR #80) Ball (smooth lip, shoulder seal); a Ball blue QT (RB #613-1 / SFJR #1290) Trade Mark Climax U S Pat Off Registered Pat d July 14, 1908; and an aqua HG (RB #232-6 / SFJR #835) The Ball Jar Mason s Patent Nov 30 th 1858 (base: M). Mike also brought a medium green QT (RB # / SFJR #742) Mason (arched letters, 5/8" tall); and an emerald green commemorative salad dressing bottle (front: 100 Years Ball Corporation / Our Centennial (Ball logo) Year / 1980) (reverse: Our 20th Year Carteret / Conscientious People Supplying a Quality Product). Dave Rittenhouse brought a couple of January Show purchases. He shared an amber QT (RB #751 / SFJR #1292) Trade Mark The Dandy (with tiny seed bubbles); an amber QT (RB #1123 / SFJR #485) Globe (with seed bubbles). Our club is really an international organization with members from all across the United States and a few from Canada. Not everyone can attend the monthly meetings in Muncie, Indiana. 7 Page 7 Remembering John Lee It is with a heavy heart that we must report the passing of another fruit jar collector. John Lee of Salisbury, North Carolina, passed away on March 10th, 2019 after a short battle with cancer. Funeral details have not yet been announced. The family welcomes memorial comments on John s personal Facebook page. John attended every Muncie Jar Show for many years running. Besides collecting fruit jars, he was well known in bottle community in North Carolina. The news of his passing came as a shock because John was with us in his usual great spirits at our recent January Show. John was also a dedicated supporter and wellknown among those who collect jars made by Ball. He shared his knowledge on the Ball Jar Collectors Community Center forum website, on the various Facebook jar collecting groups, as well as in person at our Muncie Fruit Jar Get- Togethers. Like the other fruit jar collectors we have lost recently, John leaves behind a gap that cannot be replaced, but he has also touched many lives in a positive way and that legacy lives on within each of us.
