Jim Durr gave the Treasurer s report for December, and the club continues to maintain a positive bank balance. Income included a new membership. Mike James reported that we have a signed contract with Minnetrista for another year of meetings at the museum. There is no cost since we are a nonprofit club that aligns with their mission. The club website will soon be updated with the 2019 meeting schedule. Dave Rittenhouse has mailed out dealer and exhibitor contracts for our 2019 Muncie January Show to those who have been dealers in the past. There is also a contract in this newsletter that you can use. If you wish to be a dealer or do an exhibit you will need to complete a contract. The 2019 Muncie Show will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at the Horizon Convention Center in Muncie, Indiana. 2 Page 2 Show and Tell We had a very short Show and Tell at the December meeting. Most of the meeting time was spent eating or enjoying the lively White Elephant gift exchange. One of the popular items that was frequently stolen in the gift exchange was a jar formely owned by Lou Ebert who passed away earlier this year. The jar contained Lou s research notes about the jar. It brought back fond memories of the lengthy discussions that Lou would lead on jars produced by glass companies in Grant County, Indiana. Everyone was happy with the present that they ended up with and had fun with the gift stealing. Steve Riggs did bring one item for Show and Tell. Earlier in the year he had acquired a group of Ball special run jars at an auction in Indiana. He shared another one of the good jars from the lot. This time he shared a bright green jar to go along with the theme of Christmas. Steve displayed a green QT (RB #348) Ball Happy Holidays Carteret Plant 1982 (reverse: fruit medallion design). 3 Page 3 Ball Product Jar with Label for Angora Wool The accompanying photos show a Ball blue quart (RB # 239 / SFJR #116) Ball Mason (2L logo, shoulder seal, made in the early 1910 s) with an original product label for Angora from the Steele-Wedeles Company of Chicago, Illinois. Thank you Frank Nifong for making this vintage Ball product jar available. It has found a new home in my collection where it will fit nicely with many other Ball jars. It is most common to see fruit jars used as product jars for food products, but this one does not follow that pattern and once held wool. A figure of an Angora goat is shown on the product label. I learned several new things from this product jar. The wool from an Angora goat is a desirable product, and the wool has a special characteristic of a halo effect. wiki/angora_wool The Alum mentioned on the label would have been used in a mordanting process, which is a way of preparing wool fibers to bond with natural dyes to produce durable and long lasting colors. m/how-to-mordant/ The Steele-Wedeles Company of Chicago, Illinois was in business from One historical account states the following: Up until its closure in 1953, the mighty Steele-Wedeles building was a hub of activity, employing roughly 240 workers and serving as the common, single artery for virtually everything the company produced and distributed. This included Steele-Wedeles own brands of cocoa, tea, and fresh-roasted coffee, along with... (deep breath)... canned fruits and vegetables, meats, fish, soup, spices, food flavoring extracts, fruit preserves, syrup, vinegar, salad dressing, pickles, canned milk, olives, mustard, ketchup, olive oil, rice, and cigars (exhale!). agomuseum.com/single- post/2015/08/10/savoy- Cocoa-Tins-by-SteeleWedeles- Company-c-1920s It is also interesting to note that the Reid Murdoch Company was located in Chicago, Illinois. They were another major wholesale grocery company. We also find Ball jars with food product labels from Reid Murdoch. 4 Midwest Glass Chatter December 2018 Page 4 Murder at Ball Brothers Factory, Dec. 23, 1920 I first learned of the historic event through a blog post by Karen Vincent, Minnetrista Director of Collections. You can find Karen s original informative blog post (September 26, 2013) at this link: og/2013/09/26/ball-familyhistory/a-murder-at-ballbrothers-company/ One of my Father s Day presents from the boys was a subscription an online newspapers archive service. I was able to look up the original newspaper that this announce- ment appeared in. I have excerpted that article here in the following images. This event at the Ball Brothers glass factory in Muncie occurred 98 years ago.

Each jar comes with a nice cardboard box identify the jar and size. There are also a variety of AGEE canning gowiths available:
