Ohio St., Fortville, IN Meeting Minutes, February 3rd, 2019 The February club meeting was held at Minnetrista in Muncie, Indiana. Club Treasurer Jim Durr opened the meeting and welcomed the following members: Harold Neal, Monty Foust, Kelly & Ryan Truex, Mike & Gusty Monaghan, and Jerry & Colleen Dixon. Jim Durr gave the Treasurer s report for January, and the club continues to maintain a positive bank balance. A financial report on the January Show will be given in next month s newsletter. The new venue for next year s show headquarters was discussed. The Courtyard Marriott (phone ) has a connecting hallway to the Horizon Convention Center. The hotel address is: 601 South High Street. The hotel manager agreed to block the 2nd floor (30 rooms) for our club. There is a direct link at the end of this newsletter and on the club website to make your room reservation. The link takes you straight to our club s group arrangement. The hotel has an elevator. The cost is $99 per night. You can make your reservations from now until December 8, The rate is good for any dates in the range of January 7 to January 11. We will need to redo our Show Contracts and Show Flyer for the January 2020 Show. 2 Page 2 Show and Tell The theme for Show and Tell was to bring recent acquisitions, particularly those made at the January Show. Harold Neal shared an aqua PT (RB #1164 / SFJR #815) Hahne.&. Co. Newark, N.J. (around star) (the J is reversed) (reverse: Mason s Patent 1858). Colleen Dixon displayed an aqua HG (RB #2873 / SFJR #1337) The Valve Jar Co. (arched) Philadelphia (base: Patd Mar 10th 1868); an aqua HG (RB #1498 / SFJR #1301) Trade Mark (arched) Lightning (base: H.W.P. 271); a cornflower blue PT (RB #2362 / SFJR #1055) unembossed (base: H.W. Petit Westville. N.J.); a teal blue HG (RB # / SFJR #1029) unembossed (no markings on base, tall neck with threads, consistent with Hemingray); and an SCA 1/4 PT (RB #2538 / SFJR #1148) unembossed (base: Safety Valve Patd May around HC over a triangle). Jerry Dixon displayed a one quart Pluto Water bottle made by the Root Glass Co. of Terre Haute, Indiana, probably in the 1920 s. This bottle has been enhanced with a rendering of the French Lick Springs Hotel. This was created by Steve Lee of Mitchell, Indiana and given to Jerry s wife, Colleen. Jerry also displayed a half pint milk bottle used by the French Lick Springs Hotel. The bottle had the Pluto logo embossed on the front. Both the hotel and the Pluto bottling plant were owned by Thomas Taggart. Bottling of the milk products was likely done by West Baden Springs Hotel dairy which was at Ed Ballard s Castle Knoll Farms, east of French Lick. Ballard owned the West Baden Springs Hotel and was a rival to Taggart. Articles reveal that milk for both hotels came from this dairy. Beginning in 1914 the French Lick Springs Hotel had its own dairy. Unsure of manufacturer or date, but could be from the teens or twenties. Aqua PT Hahne.&. Co. Newark N.J. 5 Page 5 The New Ball Headquarters of 1976 I shared four interconnected items from 1976 for Ball Corporation at the January Fruit Jar Get-Together. They were all related to the new Ball headquarters building. The first item was a special run fruit jar, Ball blue PT (RB #350), made by Ball to commemorate the opening of their new headquarters building in Muncie, Indiana in These commemorative fruit jars came in a special presentation box and were given to Ball employees. The second item was the original Ball memorandum issued to employees announcing the jar and the fact that employees would soon be receiving instructions to pick up their jar. The third item that I displayed was the Ball Line magazine, 1976, Issue 1. This edition of the company employee magazine had an article about the process of designing the new company headquarters. The fourth item was a complete Muncie Star newspaper from Sunday, July 4, The newspaper had a a full page article with photos on the opening of the jar museum located in the new Ball headquarters building. Employees moved into the building in Muncie, Indiana on March 19, It should be noted that Ball Corporate headquarters relocated from Muncie, Indiana to Broomfield, Colorado in Ball exited the glass business in Joe Coulson An article in the Muncie Star, Sunday, July 4, 1976 describes the museum inside the new Ball Headquarters in Muncie.
